“Google Gemini on Wear OS” is the official Google Play listing for the Wear OS assistant app Google updated to bring Gemini to compatible watches. Google announced the rollout on July 9, 2025; it began through staged Play Store updates, not as a new launch for every watch at once. The stated baseline is Wear OS 4 or later, but device, phone, country, and language restrictions apply.
What is Google Gemini on Wear OS?
It is Google’s successor to the Google Assistant app on Wear OS, not an unrelated third-party Gemini client. The official Google Play listing names Google LLC as the developer and uses package ID com.google.android.wearable.assistant, the same package lineage as the former Wear OS Assistant app. That is why eligible owners may see an update or renamed listing rather than a separate app to install.
Google announced Gemini for Wear OS on July 9, 2025, with availability to expand over the following weeks. On July 10, reporting described a staged transition in which users could receive a renamed listing or an intermediate build before Gemini functionality. A broader rollout was reported on July 23, 2025. The Play Store listing data cited here showed an app update dated June 24, 2026; that is listing information, not evidence of a new rollout in 2026. Which watches and phones are eligible?
Google’s stated compatibility baseline is a watch running Wear OS 4 or later. Its announcement named Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, and Xiaomi watches. Those are manufacturer families, not a guarantee that every model from those brands—or every market configuration—will receive the update.

The Play Store listing says availability depends on device, country, and language, and that the watch must be connected to a compatible device. Setup and an internet connection may also be required. Check your specific watch’s Wear OS version and the listing’s availability on your device; Wear OS 3 or older falls outside the baseline Google announced.
How to install the update from your watch
- Open the Google Play Store on the watch.
- Scroll to Manage apps.
- Look for Google Gemini on Wear OS in the available updates.
- Select it and install the update.
- After installation, check for the Gemini app or an on-watch notification that Gemini is available.
The Manage apps route was reported during the July 2025 rollout by 9to5Google. Use the watch’s Play Store rather than relying only on the phone’s Play Store. Do not sideload an APK as a workaround: the official update path is the watch Play Store, while sideloading can create compatibility, signature, security, and update problems.

How to open Gemini on the watch
- Say “Hey Google.” The hotword can vary by region.
- Press and hold the watch’s side button.
- Tap the Gemini app icon.
These launch options are described in Google’s announcement. A Tile or watch-face complication was also reported during the broader rollout, but availability can depend on the watch and configuration.

- Communicate: send a message to a contact, such as saying you are running late.
- Remember and remind: save a detail such as a parking space or locker number, or create a reminder.
- Find information: ask a question or search for something mentioned in a connected app, such as a restaurant in an email.
- Control music: request music or ask it to create a playlist.
- Handle tasks across apps: use supported integrations to carry out requests without pulling out your phone.
The watch is the interaction point, not a promise of phone-free operation. Voice input, internet access, account setup, app permissions, and the small display all shape what works. Google says an internet connection and setup may be required; offline use is not established for these tasks.
Gemini versus Google Assistant on Wear OS

If the update is missing or Gemini does not appear
No update in the Play Store
- Check that the watch runs Wear OS 4 or later.
- Open the Play Store on the watch and check Manage apps for pending updates.
- Confirm the watch is connected to its compatible phone, then check again later.
The original rollout was staged, so an update not appearing immediately does not by itself establish that a watch is unsupported. Availability also depends on Google’s device, country, and language restrictions.
The app updated, but Gemini is not active
During the initial rollout, some users received an intermediate update before Gemini functionality. Refreshing the Play Store or restarting the watch is a reasonable troubleshooting step, but neither guarantees activation. Check again later; if Gemini remains unavailable, confirm the phone and account setup and consult the listing for your watch’s current availability.

Voice activation or an app action fails
Check the watch’s microphone and relevant app permissions, confirm it has a network connection, and verify that any app needed for the request is connected and available. If a command you rely on still does not work, switch back to Assistant through Settings; the exact setting location depends on the watch.
Privacy and response reliability
The Play Store listing’s data-safety disclosure says the app may collect categories including location and personal information; disclosures can change and may vary by region. Review microphone, contacts, messages, location, and connected-app permissions on your watch and phone, and avoid speaking sensitive information unless you are comfortable with the account and permissions involved.
Google cautions users to check Gemini’s responses for accuracy and says results may vary. Verify consequential information yourself, and take particular care before relying on generated answers or voice actions involving messages, reminders, navigation, or smart-home controls.
