Google Gemini is rolling out to compatible Wear OS watches, but availability is still gradual—not universal. Google’s current guidance sets the basic requirement at a selected watch running Wear OS 4 or later, paired with an Android phone that uses Gemini as its digital assistant. Country, language, account, manufacturer support and connectivity can also affect access.
What “widely rolling out” means
Google announced Gemini for Wear OS on July 9, 2025, naming Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus and Xiaomi watches and saying the rollout would reach watches running Wear OS 4 or later over the following weeks. Google’s support guidance, current as of August 18, 2026, still describes availability as gradual: Gemini may not yet appear on a watch even when it works on the connected phone. “Widely” describes the rollout’s reach across brands, not a guarantee for every model or user.
Google has not published one complete universal model list; it advises users to check with their watch manufacturer. The brand names in the launch announcement are not, by themselves, confirmation that every watch from those manufacturers qualifies. What Gemini does on a watch
The Wear OS app brings Gemini assistant interactions to the wrist; it is not a full phone-like Gemini experience replicated on the watch. Google describes it as useful for short requests when reaching for a phone is inconvenient.

- Ask questions or get basic information, including weather.
- Request translations, set alarms or reminders, and save notes or details to remember, such as a parking-space location.
- Get help with quick message replies, music control and some tasks involving connected apps.
- Start Gemini by voice, a hardware button, its app icon, a complication or a tile.
What works across apps can depend on phone-side settings and account permissions. Google’s announcement describes these watch use cases.
Check whether your setup qualifies
Google’s stated baseline is a selected Wear OS 4.0-or-newer watch. That is necessary, not sufficient: device selection and rollout timing still matter. Google says its Assistant works on selected Wear OS 3.0-or-newer watches, but Gemini’s stated minimum is Wear OS 4.0. Wear OS 2.x does not meet that Gemini requirement.

- Watch: Selected model running Wear OS 4 or later. Ask the manufacturer about the exact model and regional availability.
- Phone: An Android device paired with the watch. Google’s setup guidance also requires Gemini to be the digital assistant on that phone; this watch setup is not available to iPhone users.
- Country, language and account: Gemini must be available for your language and region, and account configuration can affect features.
- Internet: The watch needs access through the paired phone or an LTE provider. Google cautions that some features may not work over LTE; Gemini should not be treated as a full offline assistant.
- Speaker and voice setup: Google’s Wear OS assistant guidance says assistant features require a watch with a speaker. Voice detection also depends on the watch being awake and the relevant setting being enabled.
Google’s Wear OS assistant requirements and Gemini watch guidance cover eligibility and connectivity. A Bluetooth-connected watch generally relies on the phone’s data connection; Wi-Fi may provide connectivity when available, while an LTE watch can still have feature limitations away from the phone.
Install and activate Gemini
- On the watch, wake the display, open the app menu and launch Google Play Store.
- Search for Gemini or Google Assistant. If the app is available for your watch, download and install it.
- Open Gemini from the watch’s app menu and follow any setup prompts on the watch and paired phone. The Play Store listing is called Google Gemini on Wear OS.
- To enable or disable hotword detection, open Settings → Google → Digital Assistant → Hey Google Detection on the watch.
Ways to open Gemini
- Say “Hey Google” while the watch is awake.
- Press and hold the designated side or hardware button; the exact button varies by manufacturer.
- Tap the Gemini app, a Gemini complication or the Gemini tile.
Google lists these launch methods in its Wear OS announcement; its Wear OS assistant help page explains that hardware controls differ between watches.

If Gemini is missing or not responding
If your phone has Gemini but your watch does not, that can be a normal result of the phased rollout. Work through these checks before considering more disruptive fixes:
- Check the watch version at Settings → System → About → Versions. Google’s instructions are at Check your Wear OS version.
- Search for Gemini manually in the watch’s Play Store. In Play Store, open My Apps and install available updates.
- Confirm the paired phone is Android-compatible and Gemini is set as its digital assistant.
- Check that both devices have internet access, and verify the account’s country and language eligibility.
- If the app is installed but does not respond, check the watch’s speaker, phone pairing, selected Google Account, microphone permissions and assistant settings. For “Hey Google,” make sure the watch is awake and detection is enabled.
- Restart the watch and phone, then check again later if Gemini still does not appear. Google says watch availability can lag behind phone availability.
Google’s rollout guidance confirms that access can be delayed. It does not describe a universal manual switch to force availability, so sideloading or factory-resetting should not be the first response.

Gemini assistant versus Gemini Intelligence
Basic Gemini on Wear OS and the newer Gemini Intelligence features are separate. The first is the assistant rolling out to selected Wear OS 4-or-newer watches. Gemini Intelligence is an additional feature set Google announced for select Wear OS 7 devices later in 2026; installing the basic Gemini app does not guarantee access to it.

Google also announced its Neural Expressive design language for the wrist as part of Gemini Intelligence. Its Wear OS 7 announcement says Wear OS 7 began rolling out to eligible Pixel Watch devices in June 2026, while Gemini Intelligence was planned for select devices later in the year. Wear OS 7 is therefore not required for the basic Gemini assistant; it matters for the newer features.

Should you buy a new watch for Gemini?
Basic Gemini alone is not a strong reason to replace a watch that is already a supported Wear OS 4-or-newer model. First check the exact watch, Android phone, region and account, then try the official Play Store installation. Buying a new watch makes more sense if your current model is unsupported or due for replacement for other reasons, such as hardware, software support, speaker or LTE needs.
If Gemini Intelligence is the attraction, verify that the exact watch is eligible for Wear OS 7 and for the relevant feature rollout. Google’s announcement names Pixel, Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus and Xiaomi in the initial basic Gemini rollout, but that does not certify every model from those brands for either the assistant or later Gemini Intelligence features. Google has not established that a paid Google AI plan is required for the basic watch assistant; it does say that features can vary by account and subscription, so do not assume every advanced capability is identical for all users.
