Short answer: Fitbit hardware is not dead, but the independent Fitbit identity is. Google has folded the Fitbit app into Google Health, moved its smartwatch strategy toward Pixel Watch, and removed or changed several Fitbit features. Fitbit trackers remain available—including the screenless Fitbit Air launched in 2026—so a Fitbit can still be a good purchase if you want simple, long-battery tracking and accept Google’s ecosystem.
Buy a Fitbit for affordable activity, sleep and heart-rate tracking. Buy a Pixel Watch for a full Google smartwatch. Choose Garmin, Apple Watch, Samsung, Amazfit, Withings, Oura or WHOOP if another ecosystem better matches your phone, training needs or subscription tolerance.
What Google is actually killing
“Google is killing Fitbit” combines four different claims:
- The brand: Fitbit is still sold through Google’s store.
- The hardware: New trackers remain available, including Fitbit Air, Charge 6 and Inspire 3.
- Fitbit smartwatches: Versa and Sense-style watches are no longer the center of Google’s smartwatch strategy; Pixel Watch now occupies that role.
- The app and service: The old Fitbit app and account system have been replaced by Google Health.
Google’s current store lists Fitbit Air, Charge 6, Inspire 3, Versa 4 and Sense 2 alongside Pixel Watch models (Google Store). The more accurate conclusion is that Google is phasing out the old, independent Fitbit identity—not necessarily Fitbit hardware.

The Fitbit app became Google Health
Beginning May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app started becoming the Google Health app. Its main sections are now Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health. Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices continue to pair with the app, but Fitbit-account users had to move to a Google Account; the migration cannot be undone. Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium. The rollout generally occurred between May 19 and May 26, although timing could vary by account and platform (Google’s transition guide).
To migrate, open Google Health, sign in with your existing Fitbit account, follow the move-to-Google prompt, review the data and confirm. After the final confirmation, you cannot reverse the change (account migration instructions).
What changed or disappeared
This is the biggest ownership risk: a working tracker does not guarantee an unchanged service. Google’s documentation lists these changes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Snore Detection for Sense and Versa 3 was removed.
- Sleep Sensitivity settings were removed.
- Mobile graphs for historical stress checks changed, although Quick Reset remains available on some devices.
- Minute-by-minute skin-temperature data was removed; daily and weekly trends remain.
- Symptom logging and reminders in blood-glucose tracking were removed.
- Food Plans calorie targets and Premium recipes were removed.
- The numerical Stress Score was replaced by Resilience labels: Optimal, Balanced or Low.
- Fitbit badges, Groups, Community Feed, direct messages and related notifications were removed.
- Some profile fields and social privacy controls changed.
- Lifescan connections were discontinued.
Data tied to discontinued features was scheduled to remain downloadable or deletable until July 15, 2026. Since that deadline has passed, readers seeking old data should check Google’s current recovery and export options rather than assume it remains available.

How long will current devices be supported?
Google promises security updates for at least two years after a device is last sold through Fitbit.com or the Google Store. Its published minimum dates are:
| Device | Security updates until at least |
|---|---|
| Fitbit Air | May 2028 |
| Charge 6, Inspire 3, Sense 2, Versa 4 | February 2028 |
| Fitbit Ace 3 | September 2027 |
| Luxe | June 2026 |
| Inspire 2 | April 2026 |
| Charge 5, Versa 3, Versa 2 | December 2025 |
| Sense | September 2025 |
These are minimum security commitments, not promises of new features or uninterrupted compatibility. A device may continue syncing after its date, but Google does not guarantee that it will.
Which Fitbit should you buy?
Fitbit Air: best for screenless simplicity
Fitbit Air is designed for people who want a discreet, screenless wearable and long battery life. Google launched it in the US at $99.99, or $129 for the Special Edition, with three months of Google Health Premium; verify the live price and availability before purchase (launch details).
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its important limitation is GPS: Fitbit Air uses phone-connected GPS, not built-in GPS. It suits walking, daily activity, sleep and basic health tracking, but not runners or cyclists who leave their phone behind (GPS support table).

- Learn to manage stress, sleep better and live healthier with Sense 2 – an advanced health and fitness smartwatch
- Manage stress and live healthier: All-day stress detection with cEDA and daily Stress Management Score, ECG app for atrial fibrillation assessment[1], irregular heart rhythm notifications[2], SpO2[3], health metrics dashboard[4], mindfulness content
- Measure and improve sleep quality: Daily sleep stages and Sleep Score, smart wake alarm and do not disturb mode
- Enhance activity: Built-in GPS and workout intensity map, Daily Readiness Score, Active Zone Minutes, all-day activity tracking and 24/7 heart rate, 40+ exercise modes and automatic exercise tracking, water resistant to 50 meters
- Designed for all-day wear: On-wrist Bluetooth calls, texts and phone notifications[5], customizable clock faces, Amazon Alexa built-in[6], Google Wallet & Maps, 6+ day battery[7]
Charge 6: best conventional tracker
Charge 6 is the sensible mainstream choice if you want a screen, a small form factor, workouts and GPS. Google documents built-in, phone-connected and dynamic GPS modes. It remains a good tracker, but it is older than Fitbit Air and is not evidence of a renewed Fitbit smartwatch roadmap.
Inspire 3: best basic and small-wrist option
Inspire 3 is aimed at steps, sleep and heart-rate tracking with a light, simple design. It has phone-connected GPS rather than built-in GPS, and it lacks payments, navigation and a broad app ecosystem. Google lists minimum security support through at least February 2028.
Sense 2 and Versa 4: buy only for a specific discount
These models remain listed and supported, but treat them as legacy Fitbit smartwatch designs. Pixel Watch is the product Google is visibly emphasizing for full smartwatch functionality. Google Assistant is being phased out on Sense and Versa 3; Alexa remains available on certain models, countries and languages (voice-assistant details).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen Pixel Watch is the better choice
Choose Pixel Watch if you want a proper smartwatch with Google Wallet, Maps, a richer app ecosystem and a product aligned with Google’s apparent long-term smartwatch direction. It is Android-only, generally has shorter battery life than a tracker, costs more and is a poor fit for iPhone owners or anyone wanting a screenless device.

- Get inspired and stay accountable with Versa 4 + Premium - learn when to work out or recover, see real-time stats during exercise and find new ways to keep your routine fresh and fun.Operating temperature: -14° to 113°F. Pixel Watch is not a universal Fitbit replacement. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize smartwatch capability or multi-day battery life and low cost.
Do you need Google Health Premium?
Device ownership and subscription features are separate. Google says Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices continue to work with the free Google Health app. Basic tracking should remain available without Premium, while deeper coaching, plans and personalized features—including Google Health Coach—may require Google Health Premium. Coaching eligibility can depend on age, country and device; Google identifies supported users as 18 or older in eligible countries (support documentation).
Check the renewal date and price of any included trial at checkout. Do not treat a trial as a permanent feature entitlement, and verify current pricing at the Google Store subscription page.
Privacy and account trade-offs
Migration links health data to a Google Account and places the service under Google’s privacy framework and Google Health terms. Google says Fitbit health and wellness data remains separate from Google Ads and will not be used for advertising. That is Google’s stated policy, not a guarantee that every reader will be comfortable with the broader account relationship (privacy terms).
Best Value
- Inspire 3 is the tracker that helps you find your energy, do what you love and feel your best – all you have to do is wear it;
- Compatible with Apple iOS 16.4 or higher and Android OS 11.0 or higher
- Move more: Stay motivated with a Daily Readiness Score, Active Zone Minutes, all-day activity tracking and 24/7 heart rate, 40+ exercise modes, automatic exercise tracking, and reminders to move
- Stress less: Keep an eye on your well-being with a daily Stress Management Score, mindfulness sessions, relax breathing sessions, irregular heart rhythm notifications, SpO2, menstrual health tracking, resting heart rate, and more[1,2]
- Sleep better: Automatic sleep tracking, a daily detailed Sleep Score, smart wake vibrating alarm, and sleep mode help you improve your sleep quality[3]
Before buying, ask whether you are comfortable with:
- Connecting health history to a Google Account.
- Using a personal account rather than a work or school Google Workspace account, which cannot be linked for this migration.
- Re-establishing third-party connections.
- Exporting or deleting data through Google’s tools.
Google Health supports data connections through Android Health Connect, Apple Health and other services, but integrations may need to be reconnected. Lifescan connections are no longer supported. Check compatibility for your country, phone and specific app before relying on Strava, Withings, MyFitnessPal, glucose or medical integrations.
Fitbit versus the alternatives
| Choose | When it makes sense | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Fitbit tracker | Affordable, simple tracking with strong battery life and Android/iPhone support | Google dependence and changing features |
| Pixel Watch | Android users wanting Google services and smartwatch apps | Android-only, shorter battery life, higher cost |
| Garmin | Serious training, outdoor activity and endurance battery life | Less focused on Fitbit-style simplicity |
| Apple Watch | Best integrated smartwatch for iPhone owners | iPhone-only and usually shorter battery life |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | Android and Samsung users wanting a full smartwatch | Android-centered and larger than a tracker |
| Amazfit | Lower-cost hardware and long battery life | Different health-history ecosystem |
| Withings | Discreet health tracking and hybrid-watch designs | Fewer on-device workout features |
| Oura or WHOOP | Sleep, recovery and training insights | Membership-first subscription models |
Buyer-by-buyer verdict
- Existing Fitbit owner: Keep using a well-supported device if the Google Health migration and feature losses are acceptable. Export important data and check integrations.
- First-time tracker buyer: Choose Inspire 3 for simplicity, Charge 6 for a screen and GPS, or Fitbit Air for a screenless design.
- iPhone user: Fitbit remains more practical than Pixel Watch; consider Apple Watch if you want a full smartwatch.
- Android smartwatch buyer: Pixel Watch is the more logical Google purchase.
- Subscription-averse buyer: Confirm which insights are free and compare Garmin, Amazfit or another rival before purchasing.
- Serious athlete: Start with Garmin, Apple Watch or Samsung rather than assuming Fitbit’s coaching equals a dedicated training platform.
Also avoid old stock unless the discount is compelling and you have checked Google’s support table. Charge 5, Versa 3, Sense and other older models have published minimum security dates that have already passed as of August 2026.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor developers, Google says the legacy Fitbit Web API is being turned down in September 2026 in favor of Google Health API infrastructure. That does not mean ordinary consumer syncing ends on that date, but third-party developers may need to update their apps (API announcement).
