Yes, some Pixel Watch 2 owners have reported redness, itching, burning sensations, soreness, and rashes. Google’s own safety guidance acknowledges that skin irritation can occur and advises users to keep the watch clean and dry, avoid an overly tight fit, remove it periodically, and stop using it if irritation or discomfort develops.
However, the available evidence does not prove that every Pixel Watch 2 is defective, that its sensors are burning users, or that Google has issued a recall. The trigger may be the band, trapped sweat or soap, friction, excessive pressure, material sensitivity, the watch-back contact area, or an unrelated skin condition.
What Pixel Watch 2 users are reporting
Reports in the Google Pixel Watch Community describe rashes, itching, redness, stinging, burning sensations, and soreness. Some users say symptoms appear after exercise, overnight wear, showering, or prolonged continuous use. Others describe irritation around the entire band, while some say it is concentrated beneath the circular watch body or sensor area.
These are user reports, not controlled medical or engineering evidence. The word “burning” also does not necessarily mean a thermal burn: it may describe irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, chafing, friction, or another skin reaction. Google’s wearing guidance lists redness, soreness, tingling, numbness, burning, and stiffness as reasons to loosen or remove the watch.

There is no reliable denominator in the available sources, so it is not possible to say what percentage of Pixel Watch 2 owners experience irritation or whether the issue is unusually common.
Google’s wearing guidance also notes that people with eczema, allergies, asthma, or other skin sensitivities may be more likely to react.
What Google officially recommends
Google’s Pixel Watch 2 safety guidance says to:
- Keep the watch and wrist clean and dry.
- Avoid wearing the watch too tightly.
- Remove it periodically after extended wear, including for about an hour according to the Pixel Watch 2 safety guidance.
- Stop using the watch and consult a physician if skin irritation or discomfort occurs.
That is important because the official advice is not simply to buy another strap or continue wearing the watch until the skin adapts. If irritation appears, remove the device and allow the skin to recover.

The band is a plausible cause, particularly when the rash follows the strap’s contact area. Potential contributors include:
- Sensitivity to a band material or its coatings, adhesives, or dyes.
- Sweat and heat trapped against the skin.
- Soap, shampoo, sunscreen, lotion, or cleaning residue.
- Friction caused by movement, especially during workouts.
- A band that is too tight.
- Moisture left beneath the band after washing hands, showering, or exercising.
Google has responded to some community complaints by offering alternative bands, subject to availability, and recommending stretch or woven options. That does not establish that the original band is defective or that a replacement will solve every case.
If the rash is only under the strap, clean and dry the band, loosen the fit, and avoid wearing it during workouts until the skin has healed. If symptoms return after a careful trial with another material, stop testing and seek medical advice or contact Google support.

Could the watch back or sensors be responsible?
Some owners believe the irritation comes from the watch-back or sensor area rather than the band. The location of the rash is a useful troubleshooting clue:
- Only under the strap: the band, sweat, friction, or fit becomes more likely.
- Only beneath the watch puck: moisture, residue, pressure, contact with the watch back, or sensitivity to a material in that area becomes more plausible.
- Under both: prolonged wear, sweat, soap, occlusion, or broader contact dermatitis may be involved.
This is a troubleshooting framework, not a diagnosis. The available sources do not verify a sensor-material defect, an electrically generated injury, or a sensor-generated thermal burn. Google’s public responses in the cited community thread focused on care guidance and, in some cases, band replacement; they do not confirm that the sensor housing is the cause.
If irritation is concentrated beneath the watch body, buying a new band may not help. Stop wearing the device, clean and dry its back as described below, check for residue, damage, or rough edges, and contact Google Pixel Watch support if the reaction recurs.
Materials that may matter
Google’s material guidance identifies nickel and trace acrylates and methacrylates from adhesives or coatings as materials that may matter to sensitive users. Google says potential nickel exposure is below the strict restrictions in the European REACH regulation, while also acknowledging that susceptible people may still react. Some users may also be sensitive to adhesives, coatings, or other wearable materials.
Do not assume that every Pixel Watch 2 band contains latex. Google’s safety language discusses reactions to materials such as nickel or latex in wearable products generally; it does not establish that every Pixel Watch 2 or included band contains latex.

A rash is not automatically an allergy. Sweat, soap, friction, pressure, heat, and an existing skin condition can produce similar symptoms. A dermatologist can help distinguish allergic contact dermatitis from irritation, eczema, infection, or another cause.

Sweat, water, soap, and skincare products
Water resistance does not mean the watch and band are safe to leave wet against the skin all day. Google says the watch is water-resistant rather than waterproof, and some Pixel Watch bands have their own water limitations.
Google recommends:
- Cleaning the band and wrist regularly, especially after exercise, sweating, or washing your hands.
- Removing the watch after it gets wet and drying both the watch and band thoroughly.
- Removing the watch while applying sunscreen, insect repellent, creams, or sprays.
- Taking breaks from wearing it in the shower to reduce exposure to soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
A symptom pattern that begins after exercise or showering makes trapped sweat, soap, moisture, or friction worth addressing before assuming a hardware defect.
Fit matters more than many owners expect
Google recommends a secure but not overly tight fit. The band should be loose enough for the watch to move slightly back and forth on the wrist. During exercise, position it about 2–3 finger widths above the wrist bone and tighten it only enough to maintain reliable sensor readings. Loosen it again after the workout.

A tight fit increases pressure, friction, heat, and moisture retention. It can also make a rash appear to be a sensor problem because the watch body is pressed continuously against the same area.
What to do when irritation appears
- Remove the Pixel Watch 2 immediately. Do not keep wearing it to see whether the skin adapts.
- Stop wearing it until the skin has recovered. Do not re-test the watch while the rash is active.
- Wash the wrist gently with water. Avoid aggressive scrubbing and avoid adding new products to the irritated area.
- Clean the watch and band separately using Google’s recommended method.
- Dry everything completely before considering another wear test.
- When the skin is healed, change one variable at a time: use a looser fit, a different band material, shorter wear periods, or a revised cleaning routine.
- Stop again if symptoms return and contact Google support or a healthcare professional.
Do not treat the rash with medication as a universal solution. The appropriate treatment depends on the cause, and persistent or recurrent symptoms may need a medical diagnosis.

Google says not to use abrasive cleaners, compressed air, ultrasonic cleaning, external heat, or a hair dryer. Its retrieved instructions also do not support casually recommending alcohol wipes, bleach, disinfectants, solvents, nail-polish remover, or harsh household cleaners. Those products could damage coatings, adhesives, seals, or bands.
Would a different Pixel Watch band help?
Possibly, but there is no band that can be described as medically safe or guaranteed to prevent dermatitis. Change the band only after the skin heals, and treat the result as a controlled troubleshooting step.
| Band type | Potential advantage | Potential drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Woven | May feel more breathable and less continuously occlusive than a silicone-style band. | Can absorb moisture and requires careful drying. |
| Stretch | Flexible and potentially comfortable for everyday wear or sleep. | May retain sweat and can loosen over time. |
| Active or silicone-style | Easy to rinse and practical for exercise. | May trap heat, sweat, and moisture for some users. |
| Leather | May avoid direct contact with a particular synthetic band material. | Unsuitable for swimming or heavy sweating and requires different care. |
| Metal | Changes the contact material and appearance. | May introduce nickel or other metal-sensitivity concerns; some metal bands are not water-resistant. |
Official options such as Google’s Stretch Band and Performance Loop Band may be relevant for owners seeking a different fit or fabric style. Availability, compatibility, and pricing vary by region and can change. Neither product page establishes that the band is hypoallergenic or suitable for every sensitive user.
When to contact Google or a doctor
Contact Google support if irritation recurs after the watch and skin are clean and dry, if it occurs with multiple bands, if it is concentrated under the watch body, or if you suspect the device is damaged. The Google warranty route may be relevant, but a support or warranty claim does not guarantee a replacement, refund, or finding that the watch caused the reaction.
Seek medical advice if the irritation persists, worsens, or returns repeatedly. Prompt medical care is especially important for blistering, severe pain, spreading redness, swelling, pus, fever, or breathing difficulty. Those symptoms should be treated as a medical issue rather than an ordinary wearable fit problem.

The available official and community sources do not establish a Pixel Watch 2 recall, a quantified widespread failure rate, a class-action finding, or a confirmed systemic sensor defect. Google does acknowledge the possibility of skin irritation and provides safety and care instructions, while community support responses address individual complaints.
The accurate conclusion is therefore limited: some users report irritation, and Google recognizes it as a possible problem, but the evidence does not show that all Pixel Watch 2 units are defective or that the sensors are burning users. The Pixel Watch 2 is a 2023 model according to Google’s product documentation, which remains the relevant official source for its safety and regulatory information: Google Pixel Watch safety and regulatory information.
