Touch Lock has not simply disappeared from the Pixel Watch 4. In Wear OS 6, Google replaces the familiar hand-style Touch Lock control in Quick Settings with a water-drop icon labeled Water Lock. Available evidence indicates that it retains the same core purpose: preventing accidental touchscreen input, particularly when the watch is wet or submerged.
The change is best understood as a naming and interface redesign rather than the removal of accidental-touch protection. Google’s documentation confirms automatic screen locking when the watch detects submersion, while a Google Pixel Watch Product Expert reports that Water Lock occupies the former Touch Lock position and works in the same basic way.
Where did Touch Lock go?
On older Pixel Watch software, Quick Settings included a hand- or finger-style Touch Lock icon. Pixel Watch 4 ships with Wear OS 6.0, where that control appears as a water-drop icon labeled Water Lock.
The icon’s position is reportedly unchanged, which is why the feature can look as though it has been removed. A Google Pixel Watch Product Expert says the Water Lock control replaces Touch Lock and retains its basic operation, although that community response is not the same as formal Google product documentation.

Wear OS 6 also rolled out to Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. User reports indicate that those watches may show the same naming change after updating, so Water Lock is not necessarily exclusive to Pixel Watch 4.
How to turn Water Lock on
- From the watch face, swipe down to open Quick Settings.
- Find the water-drop icon.
- Tap it to enable Water Lock.
The exact tile order can vary by software version or device configuration. If the icon is not visible immediately, scroll through the complete Quick Settings panel.
Once enabled, the mode is intended to prevent accidental touchscreen input. This is useful in rain, while swimming within Google’s stated limits, with wet hands, or whenever clothing and water might trigger unwanted taps.

The reported Pixel Watch 4 method is to press and hold the watch’s side button for about two seconds. The screen should then unlock. If your watch displays an on-screen unlock instruction, follow that wording, since button labels and behavior can vary between generations and software builds.
Do not confuse the side button with the crown or rotating control. The community guidance specifically refers to the watch’s side button. Google’s available documentation does not establish that every physical control is disabled in Water Lock, so it is safer not to assume that all buttons are locked.

Water Lock versus the old Touch Lock

The safest wording is that Water Lock appears to retain Touch Lock’s core accidental-input protection. Google’s official support pages describe automatic screen locking when the watch detects submersion, but they do not explicitly state that Water Lock is a direct rename of Touch Lock.
Is Water Lock automatic?
Google says Pixel Watch is designed to recognize when it is submerged and automatically lock the screen to prevent accidental input. That does not necessarily mean that the manually enabled Water Lock mode always turns on automatically, or that every automatic lock behaves identically across Pixel Watch generations and Wear OS 6 builds.

- Automatic screen locking: triggered when the watch detects submersion, according to Google’s care documentation.
The available evidence does not conclusively establish whether the watch always unlocks automatically after leaving the water, whether all models use identical detection, or whether swimming workouts add separate behavior. Do not assume that the Water Lock label guarantees speaker water ejection or automatic workout management.
Water Lock does not make the watch waterproof
Water Lock changes how the watch handles accidental input; it does not change the hardware’s water-resistance rating. Google describes Pixel Watch as water-resistant, not waterproof, and specifies 5 ATM protection under ISO 22810:2010 for applicable models. Google also limits use to shallow water and warns against high-velocity or high-temperature water.

That means Water Lock is not permission to use the watch for diving, in a hot tub, under a powerful jet, or in conditions outside Google’s guidance. For new users, “Water Lock” and a water-drop icon may be clearer than “Touch Lock.” They describe the most obvious use case and match terminology familiar from other smartwatch platforms.
For existing owners, however, the new name sounds narrower. Touch Lock could be useful under a sleeve, during exercise, while sleeping, or whenever accidental taps were a concern even without water. Replacing a familiar hand icon with a water drop makes the control harder to find and may suggest that non-water use is no longer supported.
This is primarily a discoverability and workflow problem, not evidence that Google removed the underlying screen-lock function. A Google Pixel Watch Community report from a Pixel Watch 3 owner illustrates that concern, but it remains anecdotal.

Pixel Watch 4 introduced the shipping Wear OS 6 experience, but Wear OS 6 also reached Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 around the Pixel Watch 4 launch period. Reports from older-watch owners indicate that the Touch Lock-to-Water Lock change can appear after the update.

If you own a Pixel Watch 2 or 3 and cannot find Touch Lock, check the installed software version before assuming your model lacks the feature. The exact interface may depend on the rollout stage and later software updates.
If the Water Lock icon is missing
- Confirm that the watch is running Wear OS 6 or later.
- Swipe through the entire Quick Settings panel; the tile may not be in the first visible row.
- Restart the watch.
- Install pending watch-system and Pixel Watch app updates.
- Check the watch’s display-related settings for any Water Lock option, recognizing that menu paths may differ by build.
- If the control is still absent after the Wear OS update is complete, report the issue through the Pixel Watch app.
Do not buy a new watch solely to regain Touch Lock. The available evidence indicates that Pixel Watch 4’s Water Lock provides the same essential accidental-touch protection, even though Google has changed the label and icon.
The bottom line
Google Pixel Watch 4 replaces the old Touch Lock hand icon with Water Lock in Wear OS 6 Quick Settings. The feature has not simply been deleted: Water Lock appears to preserve the core function of blocking accidental touchscreen input, while Google separately documents automatic screen locking when submersion is detected.
Enable it by opening Quick Settings and tapping the water-drop icon. To exit, hold the side button for roughly two seconds, or follow the instruction shown on the watch. Just remember that Water Lock protects against unwanted inputs—not against water damage—and does not make the Pixel Watch waterproof.
