Google’s May 2024 Pixel Watch update was unusually minimal in its published changelog: it brought the May 5, 2024 security patch, with no new features or specific bug fixes announced. The release began rolling out on May 6 as build TWD9.240505.001.A1 for supported Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 4. “Smallest” describes the scope of the announced changes—not a confirmed record for download size.
What the May 2024 update included
Google’s May update announcement listed the latest security patches as the release’s change. It identified the global build as TWD9.240505.001.A1, based on Wear OS 4. The separate Pixel Watch Security Bulletin identifies the security patch level as 2024-05-05.
Those identifiers mean different things: the build number names the software release, while the patch level tells you which security fixes it incorporates. Google’s notice did not list new watch features, a May-specific performance improvement, or a set of user-facing bug fixes. That does not mean nothing changed internally; security updates alter system components even when there is little to see in the interface.
Why it was called the “smallest”
The description fits the update’s short list of announced changes, not a measured file-size record. Google did not call it the smallest Pixel Watch update or publish a comparison of OTA sizes or code volume. It is more accurate to call it a security-only, minimal-scope release.

The contrast with nearby releases helps explain the characterization. Google’s April 2024 update announced Vibration Watch, an improved auto-brightness settings experience, bug fixes, and performance updates. May’s notice named security patches only. The June update again announced user-facing changes, including on-wrist detection changes and safety-detection improvements. May was quiet by comparison, but that does not establish that its download was smaller than every other OTA.
What the security patch means
Google’s May bulletin says Pixel Watch devices with a security patch level of 2024-05-05 or later address applicable issues from the May Android Security Bulletin as well as issues listed in the Pixel Watch bulletin. The bulletins describe security vulnerabilities by categories such as remote code execution, elevation of privilege, information disclosure, and denial of service. They are security references, not a feature changelog, and a listed issue should not be assumed to affect every watch model in the same way.

For owners, the practical point is straightforward: a short changelog is not a reason to skip a security update. Google encouraged eligible owners to install it, even though no new controls or headline features were announced.

Google said the update was available to supported Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 4. Contemporary coverage identified the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 as recipients of the same build. The public announcement did not provide a separate model-by-model build matrix, so eligibility is best understood as applying to supported devices on the required software base—not as a promise that every region, carrier, or variant would receive the OTA simultaneously.

Wi-Fi and LTE versions could see different arrival times, and an older watch that had not completed a prior update might need to catch up before the May release appeared. Google began the rollout on May 6, 2024; its official bulletin was published on May 7. Availability was phased over roughly the following week, with timing varying by device and carrier.
How to check for and install the update
- Put the watch on its charger and connect it to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- On the watch, open Settings > System > System updates.
- Check for the update, then follow the prompts to download and install it if it is offered.
- Keep the watch charging while installation and optimization finish; it may restart.
Google said users would receive a notification when the over-the-air update became available. If the watch reports that it is up to date, the staged rollout may simply not have reached that device yet.

Some contemporary reporting described repeatedly tapping the “Your watch is up to date” screen as a way to prompt a check, and turning off Bluetooth as a way to encourage a Wi-Fi download. These are reported, version-dependent workarounds—not official requirements or guaranteed methods. Results may differ between Wi-Fi and LTE models, so the ordinary update check and patience during the rollout are the safer defaults.
If the update is not showing up
Try these steps before treating a missing update as a fault:

- Give the rollout time. Availability was phased, so another watch receiving the update first does not necessarily indicate a problem.
- Check power and connection. Charge the watch and connect it to Wi-Fi. A Bluetooth connection to the phone alone may not provide the right path for downloading the OTA.
- Restart and check again. After restarting the watch, return to Settings > System > System updates.
- Allow time for installation. Downloading, rebooting, and optimizing can take longer than the short changelog might suggest.
- Consider software and rollout differences. An earlier update, device variant, carrier, or region can affect when the offer appears. Update watch apps through the Play Store where applicable, but note that app updates are separate from the monthly watch firmware OTA.
If the watch repeatedly fails to install the update or remains stuck after the rollout window, contact Google support. A factory reset should not be the first response to a delayed OTA. Reports of update trouble after an earlier release are individual user reports, not proof that the May update caused a widespread defect.
What not to expect
The May announcement did not promise a new feature drop, a major interface change, improved battery life, or a specific fix for a connectivity, health, or display issue. Those claims go beyond the published changelog. Install it for the security maintenance and to stay on the update track; do not expect a visible feature upgrade.
