Update: Google resumed the Wear OS 5 rollout for the first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 on November 12, 2024, after pausing it on September 26 because some watches became stuck on a blank or frozen screen. The replacement update rolled out in stages over roughly a week, depending on the device, carrier, and region.
This is a historical account of the November 2024 rollout—not a current claim that Wear OS 5 is the latest Pixel Watch software. Google later announced Wear OS 5.1 for Pixel Watch devices in 2025.
Why Google paused Wear OS 5
Google originally announced Wear OS 5 for the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 as part of the September 2024 update. Two days later, on September 26, Google paused distribution after reports that some watches became stuck on a blank or frozen screen after installing the update.
The affected watches were better described as soft-bricked or frozen rather than permanently bricked. Some could be recovered, although the documented recovery process could require a factory reset and erase locally stored data.

Google said it would resume distribution after mitigating the problem. An October communication only promised a return later in 2024; the confirmed restart came on November 12.

When the replacement rollout resumed
Google confirmed on November 12, 2024, that Wear OS 5 distribution had resumed for Pixel Watch 1 and Pixel Watch 2. It was a phased rollout, so not every compatible watch received the update on the same day. Carrier approval, LTE model, region, and device staging could all affect availability.

The build numbers come from Google’s November 2024 Pixel Watch update notice. Seeing a different build does not necessarily indicate a problem; Pixel Watch firmware can vary by market and carrier.

Which Pixel Watch models received Wear OS 5?
- Pixel Watch: Eligible first-generation models upgraded from Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4 to Wear OS 5.
- Pixel Watch 2: Eligible models likewise received the Wear OS 5 upgrade.
- Pixel Watch 3: It launched with Wear OS 5, so the November update was a maintenance release with security updates, bug fixes, and stability work—not an upgrade to Wear OS 5.
That distinction matters because the November announcement covered several Pixel Watch generations, but only the first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 were waiting for the Wear OS 5 operating-system upgrade.
What Wear OS 5 added
Google described the update as including Wear OS 5, new features, bug fixes, and performance improvements. Some of the visible changes were delivered separately through Play Store apps rather than entirely inside the core operating-system OTA.
- Camera controls: Improved controls became available through a Google Pixel Watch app update.
- Google Pixel Recorder: The Recorder app became available for Pixel Watch users through the Play Store.
- App launcher changes: Google listed a grid-view launcher among the associated app updates in its September announcement.
- System maintenance: The release also included bug fixes and performance work.
For that reason, installing the system update alone may not expose every visible change immediately. Wear OS guidance distinguishes system updates from app updates delivered through the Play Store on the watch. Check both locations when features appear to be missing.

How to check for the update
- Wake the watch and open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System updates.
- Check whether the OTA is available and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the watch charged and connected as requested by the update screen.
- Leave the installation to finish without manually restarting the watch.
You should also open the Play Store on the watch and check for updates to Google Pixel Watch and other Wear OS apps. Google’s Wear OS update guidance explains that operating-system and app updates can arrive through different mechanisms.
If Wear OS 5 does not appear
A compatible watch was not guaranteed to receive the update immediately. Because the November rollout was staged, repeatedly checking could still show no update until Google or the relevant carrier enabled it for that device.
Use this conservative troubleshooting sequence:
- Confirm the watch is connected to its paired phone or an appropriate Wi-Fi network.
- Charge the watch and leave it idle for a while.
- Check Settings → System → System updates again later.
- Install pending Play Store app updates.
- Restart the watch only if it is working normally.
- Contact Google Pixel Watch support if it remains stuck on an old version for an unusually long period or repeatedly fails during installation.
Do not treat unofficial forced-update tricks as guaranteed, and do not sideload firmware unless you understand the recovery and data-loss risks.

First distinguish an ordinary staged rollout from a failed installation. A watch that is functioning normally but has no update notification should generally be left intact while the rollout proceeds. A watch with a blank display, frozen screen, error message, or repeated reboot cycle needs troubleshooting instead.

A factory reset may be part of recovery, but it is destructive. It can:
- Erase local watch data and settings.
- Require apps to be installed again.
- Require the watch to be paired and configured again.
- Restore only information that was backed up or synchronized to the owner’s Google account.
Do not factory-reset a normally functioning watch simply because the OTA has not appeared. If the watch is actually frozen or blank, follow Google’s official recovery instructions and contact Pixel Watch support if it cannot enter recovery or complete setup.
Advanced users should also be cautious with manual firmware installation. Google’s Wear OS factory-image documentation warns that factory-image installation erases device data. It also explains that bootloader unlocking reduces device security; incorrect flashing can create additional recovery problems. Manual installation is therefore a recovery option for experienced users, not the normal way to obtain a staged OTA.

The rollout timeline
- September 24, 2024: Google announced Wear OS 5 for Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2.
- September 26, 2024: Google paused the rollout after reports of blank-screen failures.
- October 10–11, 2024: Google said it planned to resume distribution later in the year after mitigating the issue.
- November 12, 2024: Google confirmed that the rollout had resumed.
Contemporary reporting also documented the pause and the possibility that affected watches would need a reset during recovery, but Google’s support material remains the appropriate source for official troubleshooting.
What this means for Pixel Watch owners
The important correction to the original “set to resume” story is that the rollout did not remain a prediction: Google restarted it on November 12, 2024. Owners of the first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 could install the OTA through the normal update screen once it reached their device.
Install the update when it is offered to a normally functioning watch, but do not confuse the staged rollout with an immediate universal release. If a watch is blank or frozen, prioritize recovery and data-loss considerations rather than repeatedly checking for an update. And because this event occurred in 2024, Wear OS 5 should now be understood as an earlier Pixel Watch software generation, not the current endpoint of Pixel Watch updates.
