Google did not cancel Wear OS 5.1 or remove step tracking from Pixel Watch. In April 2025, it reverted a new step-counting enhancement after some Pixel Watch 1, 2 and 3 owners reported unexpectedly high totals, including steps appearing during vehicle travel. The change restored the previous algorithm while Google addressed false positives; it was a software rollback, not a hardware downgrade or permanent abandonment of improved tracking.
What Google changed
Wear OS 5.1 began reaching Pixel Watches in March 2025. Its release notes included “Step Count Enhancements,” intended to improve precision when wrist movement does not look like ordinary walking. Google did not publish the algorithm’s sensor-fusion method, thresholds or validation data. Coverage of the release associated the goal with difficult cases such as walking while pushing a stroller or using walking poles, but those examples should be treated as intended use cases rather than proof of a specific technical implementation.
After reports of inflated totals, Google announced on April 21, 2025 that it was reverting the enhancement to the previous step algorithm for affected update paths. The global build identified in the announcement was BP1A.250305.019.W8, covering the first-generation Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. Google’s announcement is available in its Pixel Watch support community.

Why the “advanced” tracker was pulled
The trade-off was sensitivity versus stability. A more ambitious detector could potentially recognize walking patterns that produce little or unusual arm swing. It could also mistake vibration, jolts or other motion for steps. Some owners reported counts rising while driving or riding in a vehicle, where wrist movement and road vibration can resemble activity to a wrist-based sensor.

One Google support-community report described approximately 500–700 steps and about eight floors appearing during a 10-kilometre drive. That is an individual user report, not a Google measurement or evidence that every watch reproduced the result.
Other reports mixed several symptoms: different totals on the watch and phone, double or triple counts after synchronization, steps missing from some exercise sessions, and totals changing after a Fitbit or phone sync. Those symptoms do not prove one root cause. They can involve algorithmic false positives, display or synchronization timing, duplicate data sources, or a separate workout-mode problem.

Wear OS 5.1 was not canceled
The April action targeted the step enhancement, not the operating system. Users who had already installed the March or first April build received the reversion. Users who were still on the November 2024 software release received the broader Wear OS 5.1 changes without the removed enhancement, according to Google’s clarification (Google support clarification).

That distinction matters: describing the event as Google “rolling back Wear OS 5.1” overstates what happened. The platform update continued; one problematic component was replaced with the older implementation.

Which watches were covered?
- First-generation Pixel Watch
- Pixel Watch 2
- Pixel Watch 3
The April announcement names those models and build BP1A.250305.019.W8. The 2025 incident should not automatically be extended to Pixel Watch 4 or to later health-data incidents without a separate source and date.
What affected owners should do
- Check the model and software build. On the watch, open Settings and look under System, About or System updates for the Wear OS version and build. Confirm whether the March or April 2025 branch is involved.
- Install available updates. Update the watch, the Pixel Watch phone app and the connected Fitbit or Google Health software.
- Restart the watch. A restart can clear a stale display or synchronization state after an update.
- Let synchronization finish. Compare totals only after the watch and phone have connected and completed a sync. A temporary mismatch is not proof of duplicate counting.
- Check other data sources. Review connected health apps, phone-based activity tracking and permissions. Multiple sources can create apparent duplication.
- Observe where the error occurs. Note whether the abnormal number appears on the watch, in the phone app, only after syncing, during a workout, or while travelling in a vehicle.
- Submit feedback. Use the Pixel Watch app’s support and feedback tools, including the model, build, time, activity and screenshots.
A factory reset is not a sensible first response to a step-count discrepancy. User reports indicated that resets sometimes failed to prevent the problem from returning after synchronization. Reserve one for broader, persistent device failures after support guidance.

Did the update repair old step totals?
Google’s April 2025 announcement explains the algorithm reversion but does not promise that previously stored totals would be recalculated. Treat unusual historical readings as potentially unreliable rather than assuming the rollback rewrote them.
This is separate from Google’s March 2026 Google Health incident. Its status notice said the fix applied to new activity and that previously recorded data would remain unchanged (Google Health Status Dashboard). That later statement must not be read back into the 2025 event.

What the rollback says about accuracy
The older algorithm was a conservative fallback for the reported overcounting problem. It may behave more predictably around vehicle vibration, while losing some of the intended benefit in difficult walking situations. The available public evidence does not establish that either algorithm is universally more accurate across every Pixel Watch, movement pattern or region.
Fit also matters: a loose or badly positioned watch can affect readings, although it was not established as the cause of this particular incident. Workout totals and daily totals can differ because they are calculated in different contexts. Wrist-based step counts are estimates, not medical-grade measurements.
Why this still matters in 2026
Google’s activity-tracking services have continued to evolve. Current Pixel Watch help describes activity data through Google Health, formerly Fitbit (Pixel Watch activity help). Google says the Fitbit app began transitioning to Google Health on May 19, 2026, with primary tabs for Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health (Google Health Help).

That transition and the separate 2026 overcounting incident are context, not evidence that the April 2025 rollback caused every later discrepancy. If a current owner sees abnormal data, the model, build, app version and location of the mismatch should be recorded before drawing conclusions.
