Short answer: Some Wear OS users really were asked for their watch PIN or pattern before every Google Wallet tap, but Google described that behavior as a bug rather than a new payment policy. Google later said the issue was fixed in May 2025. If your watch still asks every time while it is unlocked and on your wrist, treat it as a local software, security-state, compatibility, or rollout problem—not proof that all Wear OS payments now require a PIN before every purchase.
What users experienced
Reports in April 2024 described a frustrating loop: a user wore an apparently unlocked watch to a contactless terminal, Wallet requested the watch PIN or pattern, and the same prompt returned at later purchases, including small-value transactions. Google characterized this as affecting a subset of users and said it was not a new Wear OS authentication requirement. Android Central reported Google’s April 24, 2024 explanation.
The timing caused confusion because Google was also changing verification behavior for contactless payments on Android phones. That phone-side change varied by country: users in some regions had previously been able to make lower-value purchases without unlocking, while U.S. users generally already faced device verification. Google told Android Central that the watch problem was unrelated to that phone change. The phone-verification change is documented separately.

What changed—and what did not
The historical incident should not be read as Google permanently changing every Wear OS watch. On May 29, 2025, Google confirmed that it had fixed the repeated-authentication issue; reporting published May 30 associated the fix with Wear OS Google Wallet version 25.17. That version number is historical, not a universal requirement for software available in 2026. See the reported resolution.

Normal security checks still apply. A payment-capable watch must have a screen lock. Google says that removing the lock removes payment cards stored in Wallet on the watch. Google’s smartwatch Wallet instructions require a lock during card setup.
Why a Wear OS watch needs a lock
The lock protects stored payment credentials if somebody removes or takes the watch. Google Wallet supports a PIN, pattern, password, and supported Class 3 biometric unlock; weaker Smart Unlock and Class 1 or Class 2 biometric methods do not meet the documented verification requirement. Verification can also time out, so an occasional prompt is not automatically a fault. Google explains supported verification methods and timeout behavior.
Google does not publish one Wear OS-wide timeout that applies to every model, country, bank, and software build. A restart, removing the watch, changing its lock, losing its authenticated state, an update, or a failed payment can all lead to another unlock.

What to try, in order
1. Unlock it while wearing it
- Enter the watch PIN or pattern.
- Keep the watch on your wrist and do not reboot it.
- Try another tap.
After the reported fix, an unlocked watch that remains on the wrist should generally be usable without entering the PIN for every transaction, although Google does not guarantee identical behavior on every model or build.
2. Update Wallet and restart
- Open the Play Store on the watch.
- Check for a Google Wallet update and install anything offered.
- Restart the watch after updating, then unlock it before testing.
Do not assume version 25.17 is the current release; it was the version associated with the 2025 report.
3. Verify the lock method
Use a supported PIN, pattern, password, or Class 3 biometric. Smart Unlock and lower-class biometric methods are not accepted for Wallet verification. If you remove the screen lock, expect cards on the watch to be deleted.

4. Check the payment prerequisites
- Wear OS 2.0 or newer.
- NFC hardware and a country or region where Wallet on watches is supported.
- Current Google Wallet and Google Play Services on the watch and paired phone.
- A supported card and issuing bank.
- Play Protect-certified, unmodified software.
Meeting the Wear OS version minimum alone does not establish card, regional, bank, or certification support. Use Google’s current requirements and Wallet troubleshooting guidance.
5. Check for modified software
Wallet may refuse tap-to-pay on developer builds, rooted or custom operating systems, modified factory software, unapproved devices, or watches with an unlocked bootloader. Restore a supported configuration before treating the prompt as a Wallet bug.
6. Test the card, terminal, and watch separately
- Try another card in the watch, if one is available.
- Try another contactless terminal.
- Note whether the prompt appears before the reader detects the watch or after a failed tap.
- Try a different position over the terminal; Google says the NFC antenna is usually behind the screen, but its exact location varies by model.
The retailer must accept contactless payments, and an unsupported card can fail even when the watch meets every technical requirement.

7. Re-add the card only last
Removing and adding a card can trigger bank verification again. Do it only after updates, lock checks, and terminal testing, because deleting the card will not fix a watch-wide authentication-state problem by itself.
8. Use a fallback at checkout
Pay with the phone, use a physical card, or switch terminals while you isolate the fault. This avoids holding up a transaction and helps show whether the problem follows the watch, card, or terminal.
Can you disable the PIN for normal purchases?
There is no documented switch that disables verification for ordinary retail payments. Google does provide a transit-only exception on some systems:

- Open Google Wallet on the phone.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Wallet settings.
- Choose Verification settings.
- Select Transit payments.
- Turn off Verification required, if the transit system supports it.
Google says verification remains required for other payments. The transit setting is not a retail-payment bypass.
When region, bank, or card rules matter
Authentication and acceptance can vary by country, card network, issuer, contactless rules, transit implementation, device model, and software. A report from Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, or one bank cannot establish the rule for every U.S. user. If only one card fails, contact its issuer; if every card fails on every terminal, the watch or Wallet installation is more likely involved.
Is entering a watch PIN unsafe?
The existence of a PIN prompt is not evidence that the payment system is insecure. Google describes tokenization and device-token protections that keep merchants from receiving the underlying card number. Google’s Safety Center explains Google Pay security, and its developer documentation covers device-token architecture.

That is a convenience failure, not proof that entering a PIN is inherently less secure than using a card.
Who should help if it persists?
- Google Wallet: repeated prompts across cards and terminals on supported, updated software.
- Watch maker: firmware, NFC hardware, wrist-detection, or certification problems.
- Bank or issuer: card-specific declines, verification failures, or unsupported-card messages.
- Merchant: a terminal that does not accept contactless payments.
Record the watch model, Wear OS and Wallet versions, country, card issuer, whether the watch was worn and unlocked, and whether the reader detected it before the prompt. Those details separate an expected security reset from a reproducible Wallet defect.
The Bottom Line
A screen lock is mandatory on a Wear OS watch that stores Google Wallet cards, and occasional reauthentication is normal. A PIN before every tap while an updated, unlocked watch remains on your wrist was the subject of a 2024 bug report that Google said it fixed in 2025—not a permanent universal Wear OS policy.
