Google has demonstrated Android XR glasses that can place live translation captions in the wearer’s view, but it has not released a generally available Google-branded pair of all-day captioning glasses. As of August 16, 2026, the project remains a platform and hardware-partner roadmap. There is no confirmed retail price, final battery specification, or published promise that every conversation will be captioned continuously.
What Google has actually shown
Google announced Android XR as a platform for headsets and glasses in December 2024 (Google’s Android XR overview). At Google I/O 2025, it demonstrated glasses prototypes using Gemini and real-world translation. Google described the experience as similar to having “subtitles for the world,” but said the hardware was still being tested with trusted users (I/O 2025 overview; prototype demonstration).
In 2026, Google described three broad categories of Android XR eyewear. Its materials specifically mention display glasses that can show information such as navigation and live translation captions (Android XR product categories). Partnerships with Samsung, Gentle Monster, Warby Parker and other eyewear companies reinforce that Android XR is an ecosystem rather than one universal Google-made frame (Android Developers update; Samsung announcement).

Are Google subtitle glasses available to buy?
No—not as a clearly defined, generally available Google captioning product. Google has not published final consumer specifications, a retail listing, a confirmed price, or a complete accessibility feature list for the display-captioning eyewear. “Google’s wearable subtitles glasses” is a useful description of the demonstrated direction, not an established product name.
Google’s demonstrations most clearly support live translation captions and broader Gemini assistance. That is different from promising an always-on hearing-accessibility mode that transcribes every spoken exchange. The company has not publicly specified whether captions will be permanently active, limited to speech directed at the wearer, or available for television, phone calls, video meetings and public-address systems.
What “subtitles” could mean

How a display would work in practice
The likely experience is optical see-through text in a small in-lens display—not a cinema-sized subtitle track projected across the entire world. Text must remain readable without obscuring the wearer’s view. Bright sunlight can reduce contrast; limited display area constrains font size and line length; and rapid speech may cause scrolling, corrections or lag.

Fit, eye position, calibration and prescription lenses could affect readability. A wearer may need to glance toward the display zone rather than look directly at the speaker. Google has not released final brightness, field-of-view, font, prescription or caption-placement specifications for a consumer model.
“All-day” is a design goal, not a battery test
Google uses “all-day” to describe the intended form factor: light, comfortable frames that can provide assistance throughout normal daily use. It has not published a runtime for display-captioning glasses. Actual endurance could depend on how often the display, cameras, microphones, phone link and cloud services are active.
Even a product marketed for all-day wear may require charging breaks, a battery swap, a companion phone or network access. Buyers should ask whether advertised endurance assumes intermittent assistance rather than uninterrupted captioning.

- How does it perform in restaurants, classrooms, cars, meetings and reverberant rooms?

- Are audio recordings or transcripts stored, and for how long?

Who could benefit—and where it cannot substitute
Caption-capable glasses could help Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, people with auditory-processing difficulties, travelers, meeting participants and anyone dealing with noisy environments. A discreet visual channel may be useful when holding a phone is impractical.

Automatic recognition still fails with background noise, overlapping speakers, accents, names, technical vocabulary, masks, distance, music and fast speech. Do not rely on an unverified automatic system as the sole accommodation for medical instructions, legal proceedings, emergency announcements, workplace safety briefings or critical financial discussions. Hearing aids, cochlear implants, interpreters, CART captioning and written documentation remain important options.
Privacy is part of the accessibility decision
Captioning glasses may use microphones and cameras. Before buying, verify whether processing is local or cloud-based, whether audio is retained, whether transcripts are saved, what third-party apps receive, and how controls work in schools or workplaces. Google has emphasized privacy and trusted testing during Android XR development, but a prototype demonstration is not a final privacy policy for a retail model.

XRAI AR2
XRAI advertises AR2 at $699, with more than eight hours of battery life, a charging case rated for up to 12 recharges, 300-plus languages and two-way translation. The company says speech-to-text can use online or offline models, with processing running on the phone to keep the glasses lighter. These are vendor claims, not independent test results.
