Verdict: The GA-2140RX-7A is a collectible, design-led version of the GA-2100—not a functional upgrade. Its transparent dial reveals the black Carbon Core Guard structure and gives the familiar “CasiOak” shape genuine anniversary character, but that same visual complexity reduces contrast. Buy it for the 40th-anniversary details and unusual construction; choose a conventional opaque GA-2100 if instant readability and easy availability matter more.
What the GA-2140RX-7A is
Casio released the GA-2140RX-7A in 2023 as part of G-SHOCK’s 40th Anniversary Clear Remix collection. G-SHOCK began in 1983, and the anniversary models use transparent or translucent components to expose elements normally hidden inside a watch. The GA-2140RX is the full-size, analog-digital 2100 Series member of that group—the family enthusiasts often call “CasiOak” because of its octagonal bezel.

It is distinct from the smaller GMA-S2140RX-7A. The two share the design language, but the GMA is a reduced-size model rather than an alternate reference for the same watch.

Casio’s Japanese launch announcement dated June 15, 2023, scheduled the collection for July 7 and listed a Japanese tax-included suggested price of ¥21,450 for the GA-2140RX. A February 2024 European hands-on report listed €149 and noted that official stock was already scarce then. Those are historical launch signals, not a current 2026 market price.

Clear, but not fully transparent
The most important distinction is that this is not a completely skeletal watch. The resin band, dial, hour markers and dial ring use clear or translucent treatments, allowing the black Carbon Core Guard structure and parts of the module to remain visible. White hands and anniversary graphics sit over that layered background.
The visual result is more restrained than the most transparent Clear Remix designs. The dark carbon component gives the dial structure and some contrast, but it also means the watch does not deliver a clean, glass-like view through the entire case. In bright daylight the clear materials are obvious; indoors or at oblique angles, reflections and the dark structure can make the effect look more smoky than see-through.
Anniversary details provide much of the identity: a gold-colored keeper with four stars, “SINCE 1983” on the dial, commemorative case-back engraving and special packaging made with recycled materials, recycled paper and vegetable-based ink. These details, rather than a new movement or upgraded electronics, are what separate the RX from a standard GA-2100.

Nothing in the RX designation makes it a technical successor to the GA-2100. The meaningful change is commemorative and visual.
On-wrist proportions
The official dimensions are 48.5 × 45.4 × 11.8 mm and the weight is 56 g. Those measurements place it in the normal full-size 2100 category, not the smaller GMA-S2140 family. The 11.8 mm thickness and low weight should sit comfortably under a sleeve compared with bulkier G-SHOCK cases, while the broad octagonal outline still has noticeable wrist presence.

The transparent strap and gold keeper make it more conspicuous than a black, gray or navy GA-2100. It suits casual, summer and streetwear combinations particularly well, but is less discreet in conservative office dress. Fit depends on wrist shape and strap position; a 17.5 cm wrist was used in one published hands-on review, but that is one reviewer’s context rather than a universal sizing recommendation.
Legibility is the central compromise
The analog hands are readable, but white hands crossing a translucent dial and dark internal structure do not provide the uninterrupted contrast of a conventional black dial. The digital windows use a positive display, which is preferable to a negative LCD for everyday reading, yet the small apertures can still be hard to decipher when reflections or the hands overlap them.

That is a design limitation, not evidence that every individual will find the watch unusable. Check it in direct daylight, ordinary indoor light and low light before buying if possible; transparency and contrast change substantially with illumination.
The hand-shift function temporarily moves the analog hands away from the digital windows. It is a practical solution when setting or checking a digital function, although it does not remove reflections or background clutter. Super Illuminator LEDs light the dial and LCD and are useful at night, but illumination cannot create the same daytime contrast as an opaque dial.

In daily use you get home time, 12/24-hour digital time, day, date, month, world time, stopwatch, countdown timer and alarms—the expected quartz-tool-watch package. The Carbon Core Guard is structural shock-resistant architecture in the 2100 family, not merely a decorative plate. Its visibility through the dial does not prove that the RX is tougher than a standard GA-2100.

Why collectors notice it
Casio designates the GA-2140RX-7A as a limited model, and its anniversary status, distinctive transparent construction, four-star keeper, “SINCE 1983” printing, engraved case back and dedicated packaging give it legitimate enthusiast appeal. Scarcity is not the same as investment value, however. A 2024 sold-out report does not establish a 2026 resale price, and no production quantity or completed-sale data should be assumed.

Buying and authentication checklist
- Compare the exact reference suffix with the seller’s country, box and warranty paperwork.
- Request clear photographs of the dial, case back, keeper, clasp, box and all supplied accessories.
- Look for “SINCE 1983” on the dial, the anniversary engraving and the four-star keeper detail.
- Compare fonts, hand shapes, dial layout, case geometry and transparent components with Casio’s official photographs.
- Inspect used clear resin for yellowing, clouding, scratches or other sample-specific wear. Transparent material can make damage more visible; do not assume every example will age identically.
- Treat unusually low prices, generic packaging, altered images or refusal to show the case back as warning signs.
- For a costly purchase, use Casio’s regional dealer-search function or have the watch examined by an authorized retailer or qualified watch professional. This checklist reduces risk but is not a definitive authentication service.
GA-2140RX-7A or another 2100?
Choose the RX when you specifically want a 40th-anniversary collectible, visible construction, the full-size 2100 silhouette and a reasonable premium supported by provenance and complete accessories. Choose a conventional opaque GA-2100 when you want stronger contrast, broader availability, lower replacement risk and a watch that disappears more easily into everyday clothing. If you want solar charging, radio control or Bluetooth, this model is also the wrong branch of the G-SHOCK range.
Within Clear Remix, the smaller GMA-S2140RX-7A is the logical alternative for a reduced case profile. Square-case fans may prefer DW-5040RX or DWE-5640RX, while the DW-6940RX and some other references provide a more overtly transparent treatment. The larger GA-114RX offers a busier analog-digital presence. Casio’s launch material explains that the collection varies which components—case, dial or LCD—are transparent.
Bottom line
The GA-2140RX-7A succeeds as a commemorative object: familiar 2100 proportions, visible Carbon Core Guard architecture and thoughtful 40th-anniversary details in a light, 200-meter G-SHOCK package. Its weakness is inseparable from its appeal. The clear dial adds personality while making the analog and digital displays less consistently immediate. Buy it as a design-led limited model at a defensible price, not as a performance upgrade or guaranteed investment. If readability comes first, an opaque GA-2100-family watch is the better tool.
