Verdict: Pebble’s new Time 2 and Round 2 watches refine the classic Pebble formula with e-paper displays, physical buttons and a simpler approach to smartwatch design. The more unusual product is the Pebble Index 01, a button-activated voice-note ring that solves a narrower problem: capturing a thought or reminder without reaching for a phone.
That distinction matters. The watches are focused alternatives to mainstream smartwatches, not replacements for Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch features. The Index 01 is not a health-tracking ring like Oura or Galaxy Ring. It is a tiny, push-to-record companion for short notes, reminders and ideas.
What this CES hands-on actually established
The original coverage was a brief CES 2026 hands-on, published on January 10, 2026, rather than a long-term review. It established how the products felt and looked in person, but not their endurance, software reliability or day-to-day accuracy.

The direct impressions were especially positive about the Pebble Time 2’s metal construction, tactile buttons and glass. The Pebble Round 2 appeared to address two of the original Pebble Time Round’s biggest weaknesses: its large bezel and relatively poor battery life. The Index 01 stood out because its one-handed voice-capture workflow is more distinctive than another compact smartwatch.

Claims about battery life, shipping, privacy, connectivity and software features remain manufacturer specifications or early product information unless otherwise attributed.

Why Pebble is back
The new hardware comes from Core Devices, the company associated with Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky. It is a revival of the Pebble experience, not a re-formation of the original Pebble company.
Google released the source code for PebbleOS, helping make the new hardware possible, but Google does not manufacture these products. Core Devices says on its official site that it has no affiliation with Google. The current lineup includes the Pebble 2 Duo, Pebble Time 2, Pebble Round 2 and Pebble Index 01.
The design philosophy remains familiar: always-on e-paper displays, long battery life, physical controls, watchface and app customization, and open-source software. That makes Pebble attractive to people who find modern smartwatches too large, distracting or charging-dependent. It also means accepting a smaller and less mature ecosystem than Apple, Google or Samsung provide.
Pebble Time 2: the most convincing traditional Pebble revival
The Pebble Time 2 looks like the straightforward continuation of the classic Pebble idea, but with a more substantial physical design. The metal chassis gives it a more premium feel than the earlier Pebble 2 Duo, while its compact proportions keep it from feeling like a miniature smartphone strapped to the wrist.
The buttons are central to the experience. They are tactile rather than decorative, giving navigation a deliberate physical feel that touch-only watches cannot reproduce. The hands-on report was particularly positive about the metal buttons and front glass.
Its color e-paper display is designed for glanceability and low-power operation rather than the vivid animation and high-refresh presentation of an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch. That is a trade-off, not an automatic advantage: Pebble’s display and battery philosophy prioritizes seeing information quickly and charging less often.

Time 2 may suit buyers who want notifications, watchfaces and basic smartwatch functions without a large, attention-demanding screen. The CES session did not establish whether it can match modern watches for health tracking, apps, payments, navigation, voice assistants or long-term software support. Those are the areas where Pebble’s focused design is most likely to feel limited.
Pebble Round 2: fixing the original round watch’s compromises
The original round Pebble hardware had a strong aesthetic: it was unusually thin and stylish. Its problems were the large bezel surrounding the display and comparatively weak battery life.
Round 2 reportedly improves both. The hands-on model uses an edge-to-edge display and offers better battery life than the original Pebble Time Round. The result looks more contemporary, even if the reviewer felt the older watch face had more charm.
That creates an interesting design trade-off. Round 2 appears to be the more polished object, while the original may retain more of the quirky personality that made Pebble appealing. Buyers who want a discreet, traditional-looking watch may prefer the round format; buyers who value maximum character may find the newer design less distinctive.

The June 9, 2026 shipping update said Round 2 pre-orders were expected to begin shipping in July, with all pre-orders targeted for completion by September. That was a schedule for pre-orders, not a guarantee about every new order. Check the official Pebble site for current availability.
Index 01: a voice-note ring, not a fitness ring
The Index 01 is a stainless-steel ring with a physical button and microphone. Press the button, speak, and release. It is designed for short thoughts, reminders, ideas and other information you want to remember without unlocking a phone or navigating a watch.
That makes it fundamentally different from conventional smart rings. It does not primarily track steps, sleep, heart rate or wellness metrics. It is not a miniature Oura or Galaxy Ring. Its defining feature is frictionless voice capture.

The CES hands-on found the button and basic concept compelling. The benefit is not that the ring makes voice notes possible—phones and watches already do that. The benefit is that it makes the action available with one hand while the phone is in a pocket, both hands are occupied or opening an app would interrupt what you are doing.
How the Index 01 workflow works
- Wear the ring, normally on an index finger.
- Press the button with your thumb.
- Speak into the microphone.
- The ring stores the recording in internal memory.
- When the phone is in range, the recording streams to the Pebble app.
- The app converts the speech to text on-device.
- An on-device language model selects an action, such as creating a note or reminder.
The official product description says the Index works with iPhone and Android and does not require a Pebble watch. The phone remains important, however: syncing, transcription and action processing depend on the companion app and a compatible phone. An offline recording should not be confused with an immediately created reminder or cloud action.
The CES report mentioned planned Google Keep support as something the reviewer was told, not as a feature this hands-on independently verified. Integrations and available actions may change through software updates.
Where the Index 01 could be useful
- Recording an idea while walking.
- Saving a parking location before forgetting it.
- Dictating a shopping item while carrying bags.
- Capturing a short task while working with both hands.
- Making a private note without taking a phone out during a conversation.
The strongest case is for people who frequently think of something they need to remember but dislike the interruption of reaching for a phone. It is a lower-friction capture tool, not a replacement for a phone, voice assistant or full smartwatch.
It is also not ideal for everyone. Speaking aloud may be awkward in public, and voice recognition can be affected by wind, background noise, accents, gloves and long or complicated dictation. A correctly transcribed sentence could still be assigned to the wrong action.

Size, materials and water limitations
Current official specifications list the following:

The size-13 ceiling may be a deal-breaker for some buyers. Sizes 14 and 15 are not generally offered, with the official page directing interested customers to sign up for updates. Adjacent sizes can also be difficult to judge because fingers swell with heat, exercise, salt intake and time of day.

Use the official sizing information or a sizing kit before ordering. The button’s position and the need to press it with the thumb matter just as much as whether the ring technically fits.
The ring is intended to tolerate handwashing, dishwashing, showering and ordinary wet conditions. The official guidance does not recommend swimming. “Water-resistant to 1 meter” is not a swimming, diving or high-pressure-water guarantee.

The Index 01 uses a replaceable silver-oxide battery rather than a rechargeable battery. Pebble’s FAQ estimates roughly 12–15 hours of total recording time and up to two years of average use, assuming around 10–20 recordings per day lasting approximately 3–6 seconds each.
When the battery is depleted, the ring is sent back for recycling and the customer orders a replacement. This removes regular charging from the routine, but it does not create an infinitely lasting device. The effective life depends on how often and how long you record, and buyers should check the current replacement process, fees, shipping arrangements and post-warranty availability.

The official product information says the microphone records only while the button is pressed, ring-to-phone communication is encrypted, and processing occurs locally on the phone. Core operation does not require an internet connection or subscription.
Those are useful privacy properties, but “private” should not be treated as an absolute guarantee. Privacy also depends on phone permissions, the operating system, the Pebble app, optional cloud backup and any third-party integrations. Optional cloud services or external actions create additional data-handling paths.
The ring can record before the phone is nearby because it has internal memory. Syncing and processing still depend on the phone being in range. Bluetooth pairing, background-app permissions and battery-saving settings may affect how reliably recordings reach the app.

Availability and price
A June 2026 update said most Time 2 orders had already shipped, while Round 2 pre-orders were targeted for July shipping and completion by September. At that time, the Index did not yet have a firm shipping timeline. The current official Index page now gives a one-to-two-month estimate for new orders, illustrating why dated availability information is safer than repeating the original CES schedule.
The broader Pebble ecosystem includes the companion app, Pebble App Store, developer documentation, CloudPebble, community forum and help center.
Who should buy which Pebble?
Choose Time 2 or Round 2 if you want long battery life, an always-on e-paper display, physical buttons and customization more than you want payments, GPS, advanced health features or a large commercial app ecosystem.
Choose the Index 01 if you frequently capture short reminders and value one-handed operation enough to carry a separate device. It makes the most sense as an addition to a daily carry, rather than as a replacement for a Pixel Watch or another full smartwatch.
Pause before buying if you need sleep, heart-rate, ECG, GPS, workout or wellness tracking; require a ring larger than size 13; want swimming protection; prefer a rechargeable battery; or expect mature integrations and guaranteed long-term platform support.
What remains unknown after the hands-on
The CES impressions do not establish long-term comfort, durability, transcription accuracy, sync speed, battery endurance under varied use, finish wear, replacement logistics or how useful the available actions become in daily life. They also do not prove that the watches can match mainstream platforms for health, payments, navigation, cellular connectivity or app support.
