Updated September 23, 2026: This hands-on article is about the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, announced September 7 and released September 23, 2022. Apple’s current model is Ultra 3. The original’s 49mm titanium case, brighter-than-standard-for-its-time display, physical Action button, cellular connection and longer battery target made it the most outdoor-focused Apple Watch yet—but its size is impossible to ignore, and its battery and sports tools do not make it a dedicated expedition watch.

What the first Ultra was trying to change

The original Apple Watch Ultra was not just a bigger Apple Watch. Apple aimed it at endurance athletes and people who spend serious time outdoors: runners, hikers, cyclists, swimmers and divers who wanted Apple’s connected smartwatch experience in a more robust package. Its hardware addressed the obvious pressure points—battery life, GPS, physical controls, visibility and water use. That did not automatically make its training software equivalent to a specialist sports watch. The Ultra’s central proposition was an Apple Watch better suited to demanding days, not a wholesale replacement for every Garmin, COROS, Polar or Suunto.

At launch, the U.S. price was $799. That bought a 49mm titanium watch with sapphire front glass, cellular hardware, dual-frequency GPS and a claimed 36 hours of normal-use battery life. Those are Apple’s specifications and claims, not independent measurements. DC Rainmaker’s 2022 hands-on covered the original’s launch features and positioning.

The 49mm case is the first real test

The Ultra is immediately more imposing than the 44mm or 45mm Apple Watch sizes of its era. Its flat display and raised titanium edges look more like outdoor equipment than jewelry. Titanium keeps the watch relatively light for its size, but it does not make the case compact: the crown guards, thickness and broad face remain noticeable at a desk, under a sleeve, during sleep and when bending the wrist.

One 9to5Mac first impression, by a reviewer with a 6.5-inch wrist, described it as markedly larger and blockier than a 45mm Apple Watch while still finding the display compelling. That is one person’s experience, not a fit guarantee. People with smaller wrists should try it on if possible, checking not only how it looks but whether the case catches clothing, presses into the hand during wrist flexion or becomes uncomfortable overnight. For some wearers the scale may quickly feel normal; for others it will be the daily price of features they rarely use.

Display and controls built for activity

Bright, flat display

The original had a 49mm titanium case, sapphire crystal and a display rated by Apple for up to 2,000 nits. The large screen gives workout fields and maps more room and can be easier to read outdoors than a smaller watch display. The peak-brightness figure is a maximum specification, not a promise that the screen stays at that level in every condition. The raised case edge helps guard the crystal, while sapphire is more scratch-resistant than ordinary glass; it is not unbreakable and can crack under impact. The flat face and protective edges also contribute to the watch’s bulky look. Engadget’s launch hands-on likewise focused on the size, materials and outdoor-oriented display.

Action button and familiar controls

The orange Action button adds a physical shortcut alongside the larger Digital Crown and side button. It can start a workout or mark a lap, reducing reliance on the touchscreen when hands are wet, sweaty or gloved. For triathlon-style activity transitions, Apple described using it to move between activities. The button is only as useful as its assigned action, and the screen still matters for many tasks; gloves do not make every touchscreen interaction easy.

Apple also announced Precision Start and a track-running mode, with the latter described as arriving later rather than being available on day one. That distinction matters when judging a launch-era hands-on: not every announced function was immediately usable. 9to5Mac’s launch-event roundup recorded early impressions of the size and display.

Battery: a longer day, not a guaranteed multi-day watch

Apple rated the original Ultra for up to 36 hours of normal use and advertised up to 60 hours with a battery-saving configuration. Those are maximum claims, not expected results for every owner. GPS recording, cellular use, music streaming without an iPhone, heart-rate sampling, screen brightness and always-on display, temperature, battery age and Low Power Mode all affect runtime. Overnight sleep tracking followed by a full day also changes the practical charging schedule. Apple described a Low Power workout mode for long events, including an Ironman-style use case; that should not be read as 60 hours of full-featured ordinary use.

A useful owner test is to note charge at wake-up, record the workout duration and GPS mode, track cellular and music use, then include the overnight sleep session and any charging. Without those conditions, a single battery percentage or a claim of “all day” says little. No independent battery measurements are presented here, so Apple’s published maximums should not be mistaken for a measured result.

Running, cycling and finding your way back

GPS and outdoor navigation

Dual-frequency GPS was one of the original Ultra’s headline features, intended to improve positioning in challenging environments such as dense cities, forests and mountainous terrain. GPS accuracy and navigation are different jobs: recording a route does not by itself provide turn-by-turn guidance or make a trail safe to follow. Apple’s Compass app added waypoints and Track Back for retracing a recorded route. These tools still depend on usable positioning, a functioning watch and enough battery. Carry an offline map or other navigation backup where the consequences of getting lost are serious.

Running and cycling

The Action button, workout recording and larger screen suit runners who want quick starts, laps and visible pace, heart-rate, cadence or elevation information. Apple’s native Workout app offers useful activity data and custom workouts, but runners who need deeper training plans, recovery metrics or analytics may prefer a third-party app or a dedicated sports-watch platform. Cyclists can record rides, use heart-rate data and pair compatible sensors; route and data access may also rely on a phone, and long rides increase the importance of managing battery use.

Swimming and diving have limits

The first Ultra was rated WR100, or 100 meters of water resistance, and included a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor. Apple positioned it for water sports and recreational diving, and announced a dedicated dive-computer app partnership at launch. A 100-meter rating does not mean unrestricted diving or immunity to water damage. Recreational dive capability is not the same as a professional dive computer; divers should follow Apple’s depth and use restrictions and carry appropriate backup equipment. Saltwater, chemicals, impacts and repeated exposure can affect seals and finishes, so rinse and care for the watch according to Apple’s guidance.

Cellular, safety and what the watch cannot do

Every original Ultra included cellular hardware; there was no GPS-only Ultra configuration. Using cellular service generally requires a compatible carrier plan, and support, coverage, account setup, roaming and emergency calling vary by carrier and region. The watch remains part of Apple’s iPhone ecosystem, and cellular does not guarantee a signal or an available emergency service.

The original also had two speakers, three microphones with wind-noise mitigation and an Apple-described 80dB siren intended to attract attention nearby. Audibility depends on surroundings. A siren is not a satellite communicator, phone, personal locator beacon or rescue guarantee. The first-generation Ultra did not have satellite communication; that is a newer-generation feature. Emergency functions are useful aids, but responsible trip planning and backup communication remain essential in remote areas.

Which band works for which day?

Apple launched three purpose-oriented band families. Their stated use cases are a starting point, not a substitute for checking fit, fastening and drying time for your own wrist and activity.

Band Intended use Practical checks
Trail Loop Sports and workouts Check adjustment during long sessions and whether the fabric dries comfortably after sweat or rain.
Alpine Loop Outdoor adventure and hiking Check that the fastening suits your dexterity and that you can remove it easily, including with cold hands or gloves.
Ocean Band Water sports and recreational diving Check adjustment and comfort when wet, and allow time for the band and skin to dry.

In his launch hands-on, DC Rainmaker preferred the Trail Loop for workouts, found the Ocean Band useful and criticized the Alpine Loop’s removal process. Those are attributed impressions, not universal outcomes. Fit, skin irritation, swelling during long activity, sleeve compatibility and overnight comfort are individual considerations.

Smartwatch and health features beyond sport

The Ultra also performs the usual Apple Watch jobs: notifications, calls and messages, Apple Pay, music and podcasts, Maps, sleep tracking and safety alerts. Health-related capabilities—including ECG, heart-rate alerts, temperature sensing and cycle tracking—depend on watchOS version, regional availability and regulatory status. Later watchOS updates may add or change functions compared with the 2022 launch software. Health measurements and notifications are not diagnoses. Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS can assist in particular situations, but their operation depends on setup, connectivity, battery and local availability.

Original Ultra or current Ultra 3?

As of September 2026, Apple’s current Ultra is Ultra 3. The original has been discontinued by Apple; used or refurbished availability and pricing vary. The table separates first-generation launch specifications from Apple’s current Ultra 3 specifications, rather than applying newer capabilities retroactively.

Apple’s product page describes its current positioning. The original’s 2,000-nit display, 36-hour claim and lack of satellite communication are generation-specific, not Ultra-line constants.

Who should choose an Ultra?

The Ultra fits best when its extras solve a real problem

  • Choose an Ultra if you are an iPhone user who regularly spends long periods outdoors and values a larger, readable display, a physical button, cellular, robust materials or more battery headroom than a standard Apple Watch.
  • It is a sensible fit for runners, hikers, cyclists, swimmers and triathletes who want Apple’s connected features alongside outdoor-focused hardware.
  • Water-sports users and recreational divers may value the depth and temperature sensors, provided they observe the watch’s stated limits and do not mistake it for professional dive equipment.

A standard Apple Watch may be the better daily choice

  • If your main uses are notifications, payments, calls and basic health tracking, the Ultra’s added bulk and cost may buy capabilities you seldom use.
  • Choose a smaller, lighter Apple Watch if wrist comfort, sleeves or sleep comfort matter more than the Ultra’s battery and outdoor features.

When another sports watch makes more sense

  • Consider Garmin, COROS, Polar or Suunto when multi-day GPS battery life, expedition navigation, training load or recovery analytics matter more than Apple ecosystem integration.
  • Dedicated sports watches can be stronger training instruments, while an Apple Watch is often the more connected smartwatch for an iPhone owner. Compare the capabilities you will actually use rather than relying on a blanket “best watch” ranking.
  • Apple Watch is iPhone-only, so it is not an option for Android users.

Buying a used first-generation Ultra

A used original can still appeal if its lower secondhand price offsets its older hardware and the features you give up relative to Ultra 3. Availability and resale prices are not fixed, so assess the specific listing rather than assuming a standard market value. Before paying, check:

  • Battery health and whether runtime suits your workouts and sleep-tracking routine.
  • Activation Lock status, case damage, crystal condition and evidence of water exposure.
  • Whether its cellular model is compatible with your carrier and whether a wearable plan can be activated in your region.
  • Included charger and band size, plus whether the band fits your wrist and intended activity.
  • That the watch can pair with your iPhone and run the watchOS version you need.

Verdict

The first Apple Watch Ultra made the most sense for people who wanted Apple’s ecosystem in a large, more durable watch with a physical workout button, cellular and more battery headroom. It was not the right buy for everyone: the 49mm case dominates the wrist, the quoted battery figures are maximum claims, and athletes with demanding multi-day navigation or training needs may still be better served by a dedicated sports watch. In 2026, the original is a used-market proposition; buyers who want Apple’s current Ultra features should compare Ultra 3, while casual users should start with a standard Apple Watch instead.
