Verdict: The TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4, introduced in February 2022 and sold from March 10, 2022, is most convincing as a beautifully finished TAG Heuer watch that happens to run Wear OS. Sapphire crystal, steel or titanium cases, ceramic bezels, excellent AMOLED screens, and strong golf-focused software make it distinctive. Its daily charging routine, aging Snapdragon Wear 4100+ platform, and uncertain long-term support make it a difficult recommendation as a purely technical smartwatch—especially at its original luxury pricing.
This hands-on assessment combines launch observations with a current-status check through August 2026, when TAG Heuer still listed E4 references in the US but marked some as discontinued.
The short version
- Best reason to buy: TAG Heuer design, materials, finishing, and a more traditional watch presence than an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch.
- Best size for most wrists: 42mm, provided you can accept its smaller screen and tighter battery margin.
- Best for sport and golf: 45mm, with its larger display and larger battery.
- Biggest compromises: roughly one-day endurance, a processor dating from 2021, thick cases, and no firm promise of support for future phone or Wear OS versions.
The E4 should be judged as two products: a luxury watch object and a Wear OS computer. It succeeds more clearly at the first job.
What changed with the Calibre E4?
The E4 was TAG Heuer’s fourth Connected generation. Its most important change was the addition of a genuinely more compact 42mm case, addressing complaints that earlier Connected watches were simply too large. TAG Heuer also redesigned the 45mm case with smoother, more ergonomic lines.

Both sizes use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100+, an altimeter and expanded sports software. The launch package included TAG Heuer-designed watch faces, guided workouts, a new charging stand and an announced path from Wear OS 2 to Wear OS 3. Launch coverage also claimed improved battery life, particularly for the 45mm model. HODINKEE’s launch report records the March 10, 2022 availability date and original US prices.

Specifications are from TAG Heuer’s official E4 brochure and current 42mm and 45mm product pages. The differing 430mAh and 440mAh figures appear to reflect launch documentation versus later reference pages, so check the exact model number.
The 42mm is more discreet, but it is not small by conventional watch standards. At 14.20mm thick, it can still feel substantial under a shirt cuff. Lug-to-lug spread, clasp bulk and strap shape matter as much as the diameter. Choose it when reduced wrist presence matters more than maximum screen area.
The 45mm is the more imposing sports watch. Its extra thickness and larger display suit golf, maps and outdoor interaction, while the bigger battery gives it more margin during GPS-heavy days. On a roughly seven-inch wrist, the hands-on reviewer ultimately preferred a black DLC-coated titanium 45mm despite initially favoring the 42mm.
Case, crystal and on-wrist experience
Launch hands-on coverage described the E4 as more watch-like than gadget-like. Steel finishing, integrated pushers, a conventional crown, sapphire crystal and well-made clasps give it the visual vocabulary of a luxury sports watch. Titanium references reduce weight and create a more technical appearance; steel works better when the watch must move between office and formal clothing.

Straps are interchangeable and TAG Heuer offers rubber, leather, steel-bracelet and titanium configurations depending on the reference. Confirm lug and clasp compatibility before buying third-party replacements. On used examples, also verify that the proprietary four-pin charger is included.
Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof: a hard impact can still chip or fracture it. The stated 50m water resistance is not a blanket permission for every aquatic activity; follow TAG Heuer’s care guidance.

Both versions use AMOLED panels with the same 326-pixel-per-inch density. The launch review praised contrast, saturated color, outdoor legibility and resistance to obvious fingerprints. Black levels let TAG Heuer’s mechanical-inspired faces look surprisingly dial-like, while complications and notifications reveal the underlying computer.
Always-on behavior, automatic brightness, reflections and touch response depend on settings and software version. Sapphire’s gloss can produce reflections in direct sun, so a larger 45mm screen is easier to read and operate during sport. The 42mm remains perfectly legible, but offers less room for maps and dense complications.
Fitness, wellness and golf
TAG Heuer’s software covers running, cycling, swimming, fitness, golf and general wellness, with guided workouts and customizable routines. Hardware includes heart-rate monitoring, GPS/GNSS, compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, NFC, microphone, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0; barometer or altimeter wording varies by specification page and reference.

These are consumer fitness functions, not medical instruments. A sensor list does not establish heart-rate, GPS, sleep, elevation or swim accuracy against an Apple Watch or Garmin, and no independent accuracy claim should be inferred.

Golf is the E4’s strongest specialist case. Launch material described a 45mm day containing up to five hours of golf, while Golf Edition coverage highlighted course maps, hazards and distance information across a large course database. Availability, course data, account requirements and advanced features can vary by country, model and software version; confirm them before purchase. A full golf round is also a much tougher battery test than notifications and occasional steps.
Wear OS and phone compatibility
The E4 launched on Wear OS 2 with a promised Wear OS 3 upgrade path. Current TAG Heuer pages describe Wear OS and list Android 8.1 through Android 15 and iOS 15.4 through iOS 18.4 for the relevant references. Those ranges are the latest published compatibility statements, not a guarantee that future phone releases will work.
Android is the safer pairing. Supported Android configurations require Google Mobile Services; Go Edition and some region-specific builds are excluded. iPhone support exists, but Wear OS features and app behavior are not necessarily equivalent to Android. TAG Heuer’s current pages specifically state that Wear OS 3 is unavailable in China. Check your country, phone model, Google-services status and the exact reference before buying.

That means a predictable daily routine: charge while showering, working at a desk or overnight. Overnight charging conflicts with sleep tracking, and GPS workouts, golf, always-on display, Wi-Fi and frequent notifications reduce the margin further. Launch hands-on reporting suggested the 42mm could need a quick top-up during intensive use; any historical promise of a later endurance patch should not be treated as a current guarantee.
A second-hand E4 may perform worse than the original claim because lithium-ion batteries age. Ask about battery behavior, charging time and service history rather than assuming a used watch still delivers a full day.
Price, availability and value
At launch, US pricing started at $1,800 for 42mm and $2,050 for 45mm, with European starting prices reported at €1,700 and €1,950 respectively; a titanium model was reported at €2,400. TAG Heuer’s US pages in the August 2026 snapshot showed discontinued examples at $1,050 for one 42mm rubber reference, $1,250 for a 42mm steel-bracelet reference and $1,350 for a 45mm steel-bracelet reference. These are page prices for specific discontinued references, not a universal current MSRP or proof of a formal sale.
At a discount, the value equation improves, but the premium is still primarily for casework, materials, branding, straps and authorized service—not for class-leading computing or battery life. Replacement straps, chargers and service can remain expensive after a reference leaves the active catalog.
Who should buy it?
- TAG Heuer collectors: Yes, if the Connected format appeals and daily charging is acceptable.
- Golfers: Potentially, especially in 45mm, after confirming course coverage and account requirements.
- Smaller-wrist buyers: Choose 42mm, but try it on; 14.20mm remains thick.
- Android users: The strongest platform fit, subject to current phone and regional requirements.
- iPhone users: Buy only after checking the specific Wear OS features you need; compatibility is not feature parity.
- Fitness-first buyers: Look at Garmin, Apple Watch or Samsung first if training depth, battery life or ecosystem breadth outranks luxury finishing.
- Mechanical-watch buyers: A traditional TAG Heuer is the better choice if you want no charging routine and permanent timekeeping.
Final verdict
The Calibre E4 is a convincing luxury object and a pleasant Wear OS watch, not a 2026 technology leader. The 42mm makes the line more wearable, while the 45mm is the better sports and golf instrument. Sapphire, titanium, ceramic, polished steel and TAG Heuer’s watch faces justify a premium for the right enthusiast, but they cannot erase one-day endurance, an aging processor or uncertain future support. Buy the E4 because you specifically want a TAG Heuer on your wrist with smart functions—not because it is the most capable smartwatch for the money.
