The claim is real, with one important correction: Hermès’ U.S. listing priced its Paddock Duo charger bundled with a Grand Paddock leather case at $5,150, and explicitly said the required wall adapter was not included. The case is a carrier for the charger, not the charging device itself. Hermès’ U.S. page now marks the set as no longer available.
What the $5,150 Hermès set actually is
The official product name is the Paddock Duo charger and Grand Paddock case. The Paddock Duo is the electronic charger; the Grand Paddock is a leather travel case intended to hold it and small items. That distinction matters: “charging case” is shorthand, not a precise description of the product.
Hermès describes the charger as encased in gold Swift calfskin and saddle-stitched. The product page says both the charger and case were made in France. The price reflects a luxury leather accessory and presentation as well as charging hardware; the published specifications do not establish a technical advantage over ordinary MagSafe-compatible chargers.

What it charges—and what Hermès specifies
The Paddock Duo has two MagSafe charging zones for charging two devices simultaneously. Hermès gives examples that include an iPhone and AirPods, or an Apple Watch, and references MagSafe-compatible iPhones and wirelessly chargeable AirPods. Its page does not provide a complete compatibility matrix or specify how power is divided between devices, so it is not possible to conclude that every combination charges at the same rate.

Hermès also describes the Swift calfskin as delicate and says its leather bands are not water resistant. That is worth bearing in mind for a travel accessory likely to be handled and packed alongside other items.
The required power adapter is not included
Hermès’ product page states that the charger requires a minimum of 20 watts, can draw power through a USB-C port or wall adapter, and does not include the wall adapter. In other words, the omitted item is the power source—not the Paddock Duo charging hardware.
A buyer who already has a suitable USB-C power source may not need to buy anything else. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee sufficient output: the source must meet the stated 20W minimum. A compatible 20W-or-higher wall adapter or a USB-C port capable of supplying that power can meet the stated requirement.

What is known about the box contents
Hermès’ accessible product details clearly establish the leather-wrapped charger and Grand Paddock case, and explicitly exclude the wall adapter. They do not provide a clear, authoritative itemized box-contents list. MacRumors reported that a 3.3-foot USB-C cable was supplied; that cable detail is secondary reporting, not an itemized confirmation on the Hermès page.
A cable and a power adapter are different things. Even if the reported cable is in the box, it still needs to connect to a power source that meets the 20W minimum.
Why the omission draws attention
Leaving a wall adapter out of a consumer-electronics package is not unprecedented. Apple, for example, sells its 20W USB-C Power Adapter separately and lists it at $19 on its U.S. AirPods accessories page. That is a useful reference point, not proof that Hermès adopted Apple’s policy or that the products are otherwise comparable.

At this price, the objection is less about the cost of a power brick than about expectations. A buyer may reasonably expect a luxury electronic accessory to arrive ready to use, rather than require a separate basic component. On the other hand, customers who already own a suitable adapter can use it, and Hermès’ stated requirement is clear. The controversy is chiefly about completeness and the luxury experience, not the adapter’s dollar value.

How to judge the value
The product’s appeal is primarily aesthetic and luxury-oriented: Swift calfskin, saddle stitching, a matching travel case, French manufacture according to Hermès, and the brand’s design language. The page confirms two MagSafe zones and a 20W minimum, but does not claim faster charging or another technical benefit that would make the $5,150 price a performance purchase.
- Consider it if: the leatherwork, coordinated case, brand, and presentation are central to what you want, and you already have—or are willing to source—a suitable power adapter.
- Look elsewhere if: your priority is charging function, speed, or value. A conventional charging dock can provide utility at a much lower price, but it will not reproduce the Hermès materials or luxury presentation.
- Check before buying: Hermès’ U.S. product page currently says this set is no longer available. Stock and prices can change, so the $5,150 figure describes the listed U.S. price, not a guarantee of current availability.

These are different charger and case combinations, not equivalent products at different prices. The listing makes the price ladder visible, but does not by itself establish each model’s detailed charging capabilities.
For a practical power-supply reference, Apple’s U.S. accessories page lists a 20W USB-C adapter at $19. It meets the Hermès page’s stated wattage minimum, but price and availability can change, and the listed adapter is simply a functional power source—not part of the Hermès set.
