Galaxy Watches are useful for everyday activity trends and many workouts, but they are not uniformly accurate across metrics. Heart rate can lag during intense or wrist-heavy exercise, steps can be off, and calories, VO₂ max, sleep stages, and body composition are estimates. Newer models have capable sensors and dual-frequency GPS, but those specifications do not make every reading laboratory-grade or suitable for medical decisions.

What “accurate” means for a smartwatch

Accuracy is not one score. A watch can follow changes in your heart rate closely while still reporting values that differ from a reference device. It helps to distinguish several measures:

  • Correlation shows whether two measurements tend to rise and fall together. High correlation does not prove that their absolute values match.
  • Agreement describes how close the watch’s readings are to a reference measurement.
  • Mean absolute error reports the average size of the difference in a particular study; it is not a guaranteed error range for every wearer.
  • Repeatability asks whether the watch gives similar results when you repeat the same measurement under similar conditions.
  • Usefulness is whether a result is good enough for your purpose, such as following activity trends or guiding a precise training session.

A watch can be useful for trends without being interchangeable with a laboratory instrument. Screening and medical claims require still different evidence, including appropriate validation for the specific feature and population.

What the available studies establish—and what they do not

University of Michigan study announced with Samsung

In September 2024, Samsung announced a University of Michigan collaboration reporting strong correlations between Galaxy Watch measurements and sports-science or clinical reference equipment. Samsung reported a 95% correlation for sweat-loss assessment across runs from 2.5 km to 20 km; coverage of the work also reported about 90% heart-rate correlation with ECG equipment. These are encouraging results, not proof that the watch was “95% accurate” or that individual readings agree closely with a reference. The public announcement does not provide enough methodological detail to establish model-by-model equivalence or the error expected for an individual user. The results should also be understood in the context of a study announced and promoted by Samsung. Samsung’s announcement and coverage of the reported heart-rate result describe the findings.

Independent studies cover particular models and tasks

In a study comparing the older Galaxy Watch Active2 with a Fitbit Charge 4, heart-rate performance varied by condition: the Samsung watch did better in some movement and higher-intensity conditions, but worse in some resting and sedentary conditions. That is evidence about those devices and test conditions, not a direct test of today’s lineup. See the study record and its full text.

A Galaxy Watch4 step-count validity study reported a mean absolute percentage error of 10.5%, compared with 6.4% for the Apple Watch 6. The 10.5% figure is the average error reported for the Watch4 in that study, not a promise that every person’s count will be within 10.5%. See the study record and full text.

A 2026 study evaluating the Galaxy Watch6 during maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing found support for its potential as a convenient heart-rate tracker, while calling for further validation. It does not establish that all Galaxy Watch models are equivalent to ECG or chest straps in every workout. Read the Watch6 study.

Which models the evidence applies to

Tests of an Active2, Watch4, or Watch6 should not be treated as direct validation of a Watch8, Watch8 Classic, Watch7, or Ultra. Samsung’s public summary of the University of Michigan work does not establish that every current model and feature was tested. Samsung lists L1+L5 dual-frequency GPS for Watch8 and Watch8 Classic; its current materials also list it for Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra. That confirms receiver capability, not a universal distance-error rate or a proven accuracy advantage over every competing watch. Samsung’s Watch8 specifications and 2026 interim report describe the current platform. Samsung identifies Watch8 as running Wear OS 6 with its software layer in that report.

Accuracy by metric

Heart rate: useful for trends, less dependable for rapid changes

Resting-heart-rate trends and broad workout-intensity patterns are often useful purposes for wrist heart-rate data. The independent evidence is condition-dependent: the Active2 comparison varied between activity types, while the Watch6 maximal-exercise study found potential but recommended more validation. Samsung’s approximately 90% ECG correlation figure is a reported correlation, not a guarantee of close agreement on every beat.

Optical wrist sensors estimate pulse from changes in blood flow near the skin. Rapid intervals can outpace the sensor’s response; lifting, gripping handlebars, wrist flexion, vibration, or repetitive arm movement can interfere. A loose watch, cold skin and reduced circulation, sweat or dirt, sunscreen, dense body hair, tattoos, or poor skin contact can also affect readings. Samsung says its BioActive Sensor combines optical heart-rate, electrical heart-signal, and bioelectrical-impedance functions, but sensor design alone does not establish the accuracy of each output. Samsung’s sensor documentation explains the components.

For routine workouts, use heart rate to compare your own sessions and identify broad intensity changes. If exact interval peaks or dependable training-zone measurements matter, a compatible chest strap is generally a better tool. Do not use a watch reading to make a medical decision.

Steps: adequate for goals, not a reference count

The Watch4 study’s 10.5% mean absolute percentage error illustrates that step counts can be useful without being exact. False counts and missed steps are plausible: pushing a stroller or shopping cart reduces arm swing; hand gestures can resemble walking; slow movement or treadmill walking may be counted differently from ordinary outdoor walking. Different devices and apps can disagree because their algorithms and synchronization rules differ. Treat steps as a consistent personal activity indicator, not a pedometer-grade reference.

GPS and distance: dual-frequency capability helps, but cannot guarantee the route

Samsung specifies L1+L5 dual-frequency GPS on Watch8 and Watch8 Classic, and lists dual-frequency GPS for Watch7 and Ultra. Multiple frequency bands are intended to improve positioning in challenging environments such as built-up areas and tree-covered paths. They cannot prevent signal loss in tunnels, blockage by terrain or buildings, route drift, a poor initial lock, or errors on routes with sharp turns. Indoor tracks and difficult urban canyons can also produce misleading distance or route data. Battery-saving settings and difficult antenna conditions may affect results.

To assess your own watch, use the same known route more than once: start an outdoor workout with GPS enabled, wait for the location lock, and compare both the recorded route and distance. Repeat in open terrain and, if relevant, a built-up area. A single run is not enough to establish a model’s general accuracy. For cycling or running where exact distance is important, compare against an appropriate reference rather than assuming a GPS specification is a measured error rate.

Calories: a directional estimate

Energy expenditure is inferred from inputs such as movement, heart rate, exercise type, and user-profile data; it is not directly measured by the watch. Use the value, at most, to compare your own activity over time under similar conditions. Do not assume it is a precise calorie allowance, “eat back” every reported exercise calorie, or compare totals across brands as though they use the same algorithm. A more expensive watch does not by itself make energy expenditure a laboratory measurement.

VO₂ max and running metrics: follow direction, not a lab result

Galaxy Watches offer running and exercise metrics, including estimated VO₂ max; Samsung lists running coaching and advanced exercise tracking for Watch8. Samsung’s product page describes those features. A wrist-based VO₂ max is an algorithmic estimate, not a direct measurement of oxygen consumption. It depends on suitable sustained effort, heart-rate quality, GPS data, terrain, and accurate profile information. Look at changes over time under comparable conditions. Athletes who need precise performance thresholds or training zones should consider a chest strap and, for a direct VO₂ max assessment, a qualified laboratory test.

Sleep: timing is more actionable than inferred stages

Samsung promotes sleep duration and analysis, scores, coaching, bedtime guidance, and sleep-apnea-related features for supported configurations. Its Watch8 page describes the current feature set. Estimated bed and wake timing and broad patterns can help you notice changes. Sleep stages and scores are inferred from signals such as movement and physiology; they are not equivalent to a clinical polysomnogram. Treat sleep-apnea functionality as screening or monitoring where authorized, not as a diagnosis.

Body composition: useful only as a consistent trend

The watch’s bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) estimates measures such as body fat, skeletal muscle, and body water. Samsung describes fingertip contact for the measurement and presents it as a way to track progress. Samsung’s sensor documentation covers BIA. Hydration, recent food or drink, exercise, skin temperature, posture, time of day, and contact quality can all affect a reading. Measure at a consistent time and in similar conditions, and judge multi-week trends rather than reacting to one result. It is not a substitute for clinical or laboratory body-composition measurement.

Health functions are not the same as fitness tracking

General wellness metrics and training guidance are different from validated screening, diagnosis, or emergency monitoring. Samsung says its health functions are intended for general wellness and fitness, not diagnosis. The BioActive sensor’s different components do not make every output a medical measurement. Feature availability and operation can depend on country, regulatory authorization, compatible Galaxy phone, software version, Samsung Health or Samsung Health Monitor, and setup. Check the documentation for your region and configuration; do not assume an advertised function is available on every phone or can diagnose disease. Samsung’s explanation of its BioActive features and limitations provides further context.

How to improve or troubleshoot a reading

  1. Wear the watch snugly, with the sensor against skin and the case positioned just above the wrist bone. It should be secure without being uncomfortable.
  2. Clean and dry the sensor and skin; make sure there is no clothing between them.
  3. For outdoor distance tracking, enable GPS for the workout and wait for a location lock before starting.
  4. Check that your profile information and workout type are correct, and use consistent conditions when comparing measurements such as BIA.
  5. Update the watch and Samsung Health, then repeat a questionable measurement under controlled, comparable conditions.
  6. If heart rate is central to serious interval training, compare with a compatible chest strap. If an unexpected discrepancy persists, compare with an appropriate validated reference.
  7. Do not use a suspicious reading to change medication or make a medical decision; contact a clinician when the concern is health-related.

Software updates can change algorithms, auto-detection, and displayed metrics. That makes a direct comparison most meaningful when devices and conditions are held constant.

Who a Galaxy Watch suits—and when to add another tool

  • Everyday exercisers: A Galaxy Watch is a reasonable choice for step goals, activity records, resting-heart-rate trends, broad workout feedback, and smartwatch functions.
  • Runners: Watch8, Watch8 Classic, Watch7, and Ultra have dual-frequency GPS capability according to Samsung, but route conditions still matter. Use a chest strap if exact workout heart rate is important.
  • Cyclists: The watch can record exercise and cycling metrics, but precise power training calls for a calibrated power meter.
  • Strength trainers: Wrist movement and gripping can compromise optical heart rate, so treat readings during lifting cautiously.
  • Swimmers: Samsung lists swimming features such as SWOLF for Watch8, but a listed feature is not proof of accuracy for every pool, stroke, or wearer.
  • Serious endurance athletes: Compare dedicated sports watches if long battery life, navigation, and advanced training tools are priorities; compare a chest strap or sport-specific sensor for the metric that matters most.
  • People seeking medical monitoring: Use clinician-recommended equipment and advice. Verify regional approval and phone requirements for any watch health feature, and do not treat a general-purpose watch as a diagnostic device.

Bottom line by metric

Metric Practical verdict
Resting heart rate Useful for personal trends; not necessarily exact beat-for-beat.
Workout heart rate Useful for broad intensity; can lag or misread during intervals, lifting, gripping, or erratic movement.
Steps Good for daily goals and trends, but expect counting error.
GPS distance and route Dual-frequency capability on several recent models is promising; blockage, drift, and environment still matter.
Calories Directional estimate only, not a measured energy expenditure.
VO₂ max Use as a trend estimate under suitable, consistent conditions, not as a laboratory result.
Sleep Broad timing and patterns can help; stages and scores are estimates.
Body composition Potentially useful for consistent personal trends; not a clinical measurement.
Health features Availability and intended use vary; not a general-purpose diagnostic system.

For most owners, the practical answer is not a blanket yes or no: Galaxy Watch data is most useful when the metric, model, activity, and intended decision are matched to what the evidence supports.
