Samsung Health’s “total calories burned” is an estimate, not a direct measurement of your daily energy expenditure. Samsung says the figure includes an estimated basal metabolic rate (BMR) based on your profile, along with activity-related calories. It can therefore rise while you are sitting still, and it should not be treated as an exact number of calories you can safely eat back.
For most Galaxy Watch owners, the figure is most useful as a trend and consistency signal: compare similar days, watch changes over several weeks, and check whether the result broadly agrees with your weight trend. It is not precise enough to serve as a guaranteed calorie budget or clinical measurement.
What “total calories burned” means in Samsung Health
Samsung Health presents several related calorie figures, and they are not interchangeable. Depending on your Galaxy Watch model, software version, region and Samsung Health interface, you may encounter BMR or resting calories, activity calories, exercise calories and total calories burned.

|---|---|---|
| BMR/resting calories | Estimated energy required for basic bodily functions | Assuming it represents exercise burn |
| Activity calories | Estimated energy associated with movement and activity | Assuming it includes the entire day’s expenditure |
| Exercise calories | An estimate associated with a logged workout | Treating a workout-mode estimate as a direct measurement |
| Total calories burned | The accumulated resting and activity-related estimate for the day | Using it as an exact food allowance |
| Calorie goal | A target for activity or weight management | Assuming it is the same as total daily expenditure |
Samsung’s support documentation says burned calories include BMR calculated from information in your registered profile, and that the result is an estimate rather than your exact or “true” calorie expenditure. The company also notes that the figure can increase even when you are not exercising. See Samsung’s calorie-tracking support guidance.

Samsung’s developer documentation separately identifies data categories such as TOTAL_ACTIVE_CALORIES_BURNED. That naming is important: “total active calories” should not automatically be read as the same metric as an all-day total that includes resting metabolism. The exact presentation can change between devices and app versions.
Why the number rises while you are sitting still
Your body uses energy continuously to maintain basic functions, including breathing, circulation and temperature regulation. Samsung estimates this resting component and gradually allocates it across the elapsed day.
For example, suppose Samsung estimates your BMR at 1,700 kcal per day. A morning total will naturally be lower than an evening total even if you have done no formal exercise, because only part of that time-based estimate has accumulated. This is an illustration of how the display can behave—not Samsung’s published calculation formula.

It usually reflects the distinction between total expenditure and active expenditure.
How Samsung estimates calorie expenditure
Samsung publicly states that BMR is calculated using information in your profile. Relevant details can include age, sex, height and weight, with body-composition information available on supported devices and features. An incorrect weight or height can affect the resting component and may also influence activity estimates.
The watch and Samsung Health can also have access to movement, heart-rate and workout-context data. Exercise mode, fit, sensor contact and the quality of recorded activity can affect what the algorithms infer. However, Samsung does not publish a complete consumer-facing formula for the total-calorie figure in the sources available here.

That means it is not appropriate to claim that every model uses every sensor in every activity mode, or that a particular named formula explains every displayed calorie. A wrist device infers energy expenditure from available signals; it does not directly measure oxygen consumption, heat production or the chemical energy used by your body.
Even heart rate is only one clue. Two people can have the same heart rate during an activity but expend different amounts because of body mass, fitness, movement efficiency, temperature, medication, terrain and the type of exercise.
What independent studies say about Galaxy Watch calorie accuracy
Galaxy Watch 5: a specific laboratory result
A peer-reviewed 2026 PLOS One study compared several consumer watches, including the Galaxy Watch 5, with a COSMED K5 metabolic system using indirect calorimetry. In the study’s physical-activity protocol, the Galaxy Watch 5 showed a mean bias of +56.76 kcal, with a standard deviation of 42.03 kcal.
That result means the watch overestimated energy expenditure on average under that particular protocol. It does not mean every Galaxy Watch 5 user is 56.76 kcal over, and it does not establish the accuracy of a complete day’s Samsung Health total. The study involved a small sample and a short, controlled recumbent-cycling test. Its participants were Hispanic adults, so the findings should not automatically be generalized to every population, body type or Galaxy Watch generation. Read the full PLOS One study.
The study also reported that energy-expenditure error increased with body-fat percentage across the tested devices. That is a reason to avoid promising one universal accuracy percentage, not proof that the watch will fail for every person with a particular body composition or skin tone.
Galaxy Watch 6 and 7: intermittent running research
A separate 2026 study evaluated the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 7 during intermittent moderate- and vigorous-intensity running, again using indirect calorimetry as the reference. In that tested protocol, reported average expenditure was approximately 213.60 kcal by indirect calorimetry, compared with approximately 219.53 kcal for the Galaxy Watch 6 and 202.67 kcal for the Galaxy Watch 7.

These group averages show that the watches’ estimates differed from the criterion measurement, but they do not prove universal accuracy or inaccuracy. A structured running test is not the same as resistance training, outdoor cycling, swimming, household activity, commuting, sleep or an unstructured day. See the Galaxy Watch 6 and 7 running study.
Samsung’s validation claims need careful interpretation
Samsung and the University of Michigan have announced validation work involving Galaxy Watch fitness features. Samsung reported strong correlations for metrics including heart rate, sweat loss, VO₂ max and body-fat percentage in testing involving elite runners.
That announcement does not establish a universal error margin for Samsung Health’s total calories burned. Validation of heart rate or VO₂ max does not automatically validate calorie expenditure. Also, correlation means that two measurements tend to rise and fall together; it does not guarantee that their absolute values are close. The claims are best understood in the context of the specific metrics and participants described by Samsung’s announcement.

Research on consumer wearables generally finds that energy-expenditure estimates vary substantially by device, person and activity. A 2024 umbrella review concluded that error ranges can be wide and that no device should automatically be considered accurate enough for every energy-expenditure use case. An INTERLIVE expert statement likewise emphasizes that validation must match the intended use: a laboratory activity test cannot automatically validate free-living, all-day expenditure.
A separate systematic review of commercial wearables found energy-expenditure accuracy to be generally weaker and more variable than step-count accuracy. Counting steps and estimating calories are different technical problems. Calories depend on effort, body mass, muscle recruitment, terrain, movement economy and individual metabolism—variables a wrist device cannot directly observe.
Is Samsung Health accurate enough for weight loss?
It can help with weight-loss tracking, but it should not determine your food budget by itself. The safest approach is to use Samsung’s number as one input, not as permission to consume every displayed exercise calorie.

For personal calibration, track these over several weeks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Average logged food and drink intake
- Samsung Health’s average expenditure estimate
- Seven-day average body weight
- Exercise type, duration and consistency
If your weight is broadly stable, your average intake is broadly close to your actual average expenditure, regardless of the watch’s displayed total. If your weight changes consistently, the direction and rate of change provide a practical reality check. This is not a laboratory metabolic test, and food logging itself can be incomplete, but several weeks of data are more informative than one unusually high or low watch reading.
Be particularly cautious about “eating back” calories from resistance training, intervals, swimming, cycling or workouts recorded with questionable heart-rate contact. A conservative strategy is to maintain a consistent intake target, observe the multi-week weight trend and adjust gradually rather than treating the watch’s calorie number as a precise credit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Samsung may disagree with Apple, Fitbit, Garmin or gym equipment
Different platforms use different algorithms, profile assumptions, sensor inputs and definitions. One device may show active calories, another may show total calories including resting expenditure, and a third may apply a different estimate during a workout.
Gym machines are not automatically a ground truth. Treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and rowing machines often use generalized equations unless they have validated individual measurements. If Samsung, Apple, Garmin, Fitbit and a treadmill disagree, the disagreement alone does not identify which estimate is correct.
For the same reason, switching brands may improve the experience, ecosystem or activity features without solving the underlying problem of estimating calories. Choose a different wearable for better compatibility or preferred training tools—not because any consumer watch guarantees exact energy expenditure.

How to improve the quality of the estimate
- Correct your profile. Check height, weight, age, sex, units and Samsung account details. Update body-composition information where your device supports it.
- Wear the watch securely. The sensor should maintain consistent skin contact without being painfully tight. Remove barriers such as loose clothing between the sensor and wrist.
- Use the correct workout mode. The mode supplies activity context, but it does not turn an estimate into a direct measurement. Selecting the wrong mode can make the result less meaningful.
- Keep the software current. Update the watch and Samsung Health when practical, while remembering that interface labels and algorithms can vary by model and version.
- Review the raw context. Check whether steps, distance, heart rate and workout duration look plausible.
- Avoid double counting. Do not manually add exercise calories to a total if that workout is already included in the day’s summary.
- Use rolling averages. Compare seven- to fourteen-day patterns rather than isolated totals.
How to view the calorie figure
On current Samsung smartwatch support paths, open Samsung Health on the watch, open the Daily Activity tracker and review the displayed calorie figure. On Wear OS models, the Daily Activity tile may also provide access.
Older Samsung Health interfaces may instead use this route: open Samsung Health, open Calories, then tap View each date to inspect daily or weekly records. Labels and availability vary by watch, carrier, software version and region, so the exact screen on your device may differ. Samsung documents interface differences in its regional Galaxy Watch support guidance.
What to do when Samsung Health reports an impossible number
Work through this checklist before assuming the algorithm has made a meaningful calorie claim:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Was a workout auto-detected or started manually?
- Was the wrong exercise mode selected?
- Does the recorded step count or distance look impossible?
- Was the watch worn during a vehicle trip or vibration-heavy activity?
- Was the watch loose, removed or worn over clothing?
- Was your weight, height or body-composition information recently changed?
- Are you looking at active calories rather than total calories?
- Did the watch or Samsung Health update recently?
- Could the data be delayed, duplicated or imported through Health Connect?
If calories remain at zero or stop recording after exercise, Samsung recommends backing up your data and resetting the watch. A reset can result in data loss, so back up first and follow the current instructions in Samsung’s support documentation.
When to trust, discount or ignore the number
Use it relatively confidently as a trend when:
- You wear the watch consistently.
- Your profile is correct.
- The fit is secure and sensor readings look plausible.
- The activity resembles previous tracked activity.
- You care about direction and consistency rather than exact calories.
- The estimate broadly agrees with multi-week weight trends.
Discount it when:
- The activity is resistance training, interval work, swimming or unusual cycling.
- The watch was loose, removed or blocked from the skin.
- Your weight is high or changing rapidly.
- The result is dramatically different from previous days without a behavioral explanation.
- Steps, distance, heart rate or active calories are implausible.
- The workout was recorded under the wrong mode.
Do not use it as a clinical measurement when:
You are managing diabetes, an eating disorder, cardiovascular disease or another condition requiring precise nutrition or energy guidance. It should not be used to prescribe diet or exercise, determine medication-related calorie needs or replace advice from a qualified clinician or registered dietitian.
