Most Apple Watches last about three to five years as practical everyday devices. That is a rule of thumb, not an Apple guarantee. Battery degradation is usually the first limitation, but software support, iPhone compatibility, physical damage, and the need for newer health or safety features can determine the real end of a watch’s useful life.
A watch can remain functional beyond five years, especially with battery service. The better question is whether it still lasts through your routine, works with your iPhone, receives the software you need, and is worth repairing.
What does “last” mean?
Apple Watch longevity has several separate meanings:
- Battery life per charge: how many hours it runs before recharging.
- Battery lifespan: how long the rechargeable battery retains useful capacity.
- Functional lifespan: how long it performs the tasks you need.
- Software-support lifespan: how long it receives current watchOS versions, security fixes, and app support.
- Physical lifespan: how long the screen, case, buttons, sensors, seals, and charger remain reliable.
- Economic lifespan: when repair and continued use stop making financial sense compared with replacement.
A four-year-old watch may still tell time and record workouts but no longer support the newest features. Conversely, a newer watch with a cracked screen or severely degraded battery may be unusable before software support ends.

How long does an Apple Watch battery last per charge?
Daily runtime depends on the model and workload. Apple’s “all-day” figures are based on controlled usage patterns, not a guarantee for every owner. Cellular service, weak signal, GPS workouts, music playback, sleep tracking, Always-On display, frequent notifications, high brightness, background health measurements, and extreme temperatures can all reduce runtime.
An aging battery also provides less usable capacity. Heavy GPS, cellular, or sleep-tracking use does not automatically indicate a defective watch; it simply increases power consumption and charging cycles.
How long before the battery degrades?
Apple says Apple Watch batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions (Apple’s battery information). A complete cycle means cumulative usage equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity, not necessarily one uninterrupted discharge from 100% to zero.
The 1,000-cycle figure is a design target under ideal conditions, not a promise that every watch will show exactly 80% at that point. Heat, heavy use, charging habits, temperature, and chemical age all affect results. Many owners notice meaningful decline after roughly two to four years, but the timing varies substantially.
For long-term storage, Apple recommends charging the watch to about 50%, powering it off, and keeping it somewhere cool and dry. Avoid leaving it fully charged or completely empty for months, and avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight or hot environments.
How to check Apple Watch battery health
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
- Read Maximum Capacity.
Maximum Capacity is an estimate of remaining battery capacity, not a direct prediction of runtime. A watch with a relatively high percentage may still drain quickly because of cellular use, GPS, weak signal, temperature, software activity, or hardware problems. Judge the number alongside real-world performance: can it complete your normal day, workout, and overnight tracking session?
Battery-health estimates can also be recalibrated after some software updates, so a changed percentage does not necessarily mean the physical battery suddenly gained or lost the same amount of capacity. Apple documents battery-health behavior and recalibration details in its battery and performance guidance.
Signs your battery may need service
Investigate battery service when the watch:
- no longer lasts through your normal day;
- cannot complete a usual workout or sleep-tracking session;
- shuts down unexpectedly while showing charge remaining;
- requires unusually frequent charging;
- shows substantially degraded Maximum Capacity; or
- appears slower or less reliable in ways associated with an aged battery.
Apple notes that battery aging can sometimes be associated with longer app launches, lower frame rates, reduced wireless throughput, dimming, lower speaker volume, or missing heart-rate data during workouts. These are possible effects, not symptoms every owner will experience.
Do not diagnose a replacement from one poor day alone. Update watchOS, restart the watch, check recent usage, and test whether cellular or GPS-heavy activity is responsible. If poor runtime persists, use Apple’s model-specific repair estimate. There is no universal Apple Watch battery-service price: estimates vary by model, location, tax, shipping, and provider, and Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees.

What Apple battery service actually means
“Battery service” is the safer term than assuming a technician will install a new cell in your original watch. Apple’s service process may involve repair or replacement equipment. Apple says replacement equipment can contain new or previously used genuine Apple parts that meet its functional requirements.
Before service, back up and unpair the watch. Ask Apple or the service provider what outcome applies to your specific model. Also verify that the watch will remain compatible with your iPhone and the relevant watchOS version.
Software support and iPhone compatibility
Software support is not fixed at a universal number of years. It can mean major watchOS updates, security fixes, app compatibility, pairing with newer iPhones, and access to newer health and safety features.
Support snapshot checked August 18, 2026: Apple’s watchOS 26 compatibility information covers Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. Check Apple’s current Apple Watch support information before buying or servicing an older model.
Apple has also announced watchOS 27 compatibility for newer models including Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and SE 3. Treat that as announced or forthcoming compatibility where applicable, rather than proof that the release was generally available on the date above. Reports from MacRumors and Tom’s Guide provide release context.
When a watch stops receiving the latest major update, it does not immediately stop working. Existing timekeeping, notifications, workouts, and other functions may continue. Over time, however, future iPhone versions, apps, security updates, and features can become limiting factors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApple generally says it and service providers provide service and parts for Apple products for at least five years from when Apple last distributed the product for sale, subject to availability and other conditions. That is a service-and-parts policy, not a promise of software updates or a guarantee that every repair will remain available (Apple’s service policy).
What physically fails first?
Battery
The battery is the most predictable aging component and is often serviceable if the rest of the watch still meets your needs.
Screen and case
A cracked screen can affect touch input, visibility, and safety. It can also compromise water resistance. Do not treat a cracked watch as safe for swimming.

Water resistance
Apple Watches are water resistant, not permanently waterproof. Water resistance can diminish with age, impact, seal wear, and repairs. Original model ratings describe the watch’s design and condition when new; they are not a lifetime guarantee.
Charging system
Charging problems can come from dirty or wet contact surfaces, a damaged cable or adapter, software, battery degradation, or internal hardware. Try a known-good compatible charger and clean, dry contact surfaces before assuming the watch has failed.
Controls and sensors
The Digital Crown, side button, speakers, microphones, and health sensors can suffer from impact, contamination, corrosion, or ordinary wear. A damaged back crystal or poor fit can also reduce the usefulness of health measurements.

| Repair is usually more sensible when… | Replacement is usually more sensible when… |
|---|---|
| The battery is the main problem. | The watch is excluded from the current or needed watchOS version. |
| The screen, case, and sensors are intact. | It cannot pair with your current iPhone. |
| It still meets your fitness and health needs. | It needs both battery and screen or body repair. |
| The service estimate is well below a suitable replacement. | You need newer sensors, safety features, faster charging, display, cellular, or performance. |
| You accept that service may involve replacement equipment. | The service estimate approaches the value of a newer or reputable refurbished watch. |
A battery-health reading below 80% is not an automatic replacement order. It is a useful service benchmark and an AppleCare threshold, but the practical question is whether the watch meets your routine. AppleCare battery service below 80% is subject to the plan’s terms and duration (AppleCare).
If the watch becomes unusually hot, the screen lifts, the casing separates, or the battery appears swollen, stop wearing and charging it. Keep it away from flammable materials and contact Apple or an Authorized Service Provider. Do not puncture, pry open, or continue using it.

- Use Optimized Charging: Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit, where available. The exact option depends on the model and watchOS version. See Apple’s charging guidance.
- Avoid heat: Do not leave the watch charging in direct sun, a hot car, or another hot environment.
- Use Low Power Mode strategically: It can help you finish a difficult day, but may change or disable features such as Always-On display, background health measurements, some notifications, gestures, and wireless behavior. It extends runtime per charge; it does not reverse battery aging (Apple’s Low Power Mode guidance).
- Protect the screen and case: Impacts can affect sensors, seals, and water resistance even when the watch still works.
- Store it correctly: For storage lasting weeks or months, charge to about 50%, power it off, and keep it cool and dry.
- Keep charging surfaces dry and clean: This avoids confusing charger or contact problems with battery failure.
Buying a used or refurbished Apple Watch
Do not judge a used watch by generation or purchase price alone. Check:
- exact model and generation;
- battery health and actual charging behavior;
- current watchOS and iPhone compatibility;
- Activation Lock status;
- cellular lock or carrier status, if applicable;
- screen, Digital Crown, and side-button condition;
- whether the watch completes charging normally;
- evidence of water exposure or unknown repairs; and
- the seller’s warranty and return policy.
A cheap older watch can be poor value if it is near its software-support cutoff or needs battery service soon. Prefer a seller that offers a clear return window and warranty rather than relying only on a screenshot of battery health.
Bottom line
Plan on roughly three to five years of useful everyday ownership, but assess the individual watch rather than applying a fixed expiration date. Keep it if it meets your needs and lasts through your routine. Service it when battery degradation is the main problem and the watch remains supported and physically sound. Replace it when compatibility, software support, major damage, or the total repair cost makes continued ownership less sensible.
