MMT—Manufacture Modules Technologies—was a Geneva-based platform company that helped Swiss watch brands add connected features to traditional-looking watches. Its 2015 partnership with California’s Fullpower Technologies paired Fullpower’s wearable software and intellectual property with MMT’s watch-industry integration and services. The result was not an Apple Watch rival with a large touchscreen, but an OEM system for analog watches with activity and sleep tracking, smartphone syncing and, on applicable models, a battery life MMT said exceeded two years.
What MMT was—and what “horological smartwatch” meant
MMT was short for Manufacture Modules Technologies. Established in Geneva in 2015, it supplied technology to watch brands rather than building its identity around a single consumer smartwatch. Its platform encompassed watch modules, firmware, smartphone apps, cloud services, manufacturing support and service tools. “Horological smartwatch” was the launch-era name for a connected watch designed to retain the look and conventions of a traditional watch. The category included analog hands and, depending on the model, a small secondary or digital display. Instead of putting a large touchscreen at the center, the watches emphasized timekeeping, basic activity and sleep functions, and phone-linked features.
That description covers a range of configurations, not one identical watch. Brands selected different cases, dials, modules and feature sets, so a capability listed for the platform should not be assumed to appear on every MMT-powered model.

How the Swiss–Silicon Valley relationship worked
Fullpower supplied wearable technology and intellectual property
Fullpower Technologies was a California wearable-technology company founded in 2003 by Philippe Kahn. Its MotionX and Sleeptracker technologies formed the software and sensing foundation associated with MMT’s early watches. MMT integrated the technology for the watch industry
MMT adapted and packaged the underlying technology for watch brands: integrating it into modules and watch designs, supporting production, and providing software and service infrastructure. The brands brought their own product design and customer-facing identity. That division of labor explains the “bridge” between Silicon Valley and Switzerland more clearly than the metaphor alone: technology and IP came from Fullpower, while MMT made them usable within a Swiss watch-industry supply model.
The corporate structure and the license were separate matters
At its 2015 announcement, MMT was described as a Swiss joint venture between Fullpower and the owners of the Frédérique Constant Group. In 2016, MMT said it had spun out from that group and would operate as an independent Swiss company. Separately, on August 10, 2016, MMT announced a worldwide, non-exclusive patent and technology license from Fullpower covering MotionX and Sleeptracker for use in analog quartz, mechanical and electro-mechanical watches. What the platform did
The connected-watch system linked sensors and watch electronics to a phone app, with cloud services supporting some functions. Depending on the module and watch, it could provide:
- Activity tracking, including steps, calories and distance.
- Sleep monitoring, including estimates of deep sleep, light sleep and awake periods.
- Goals and coaching features.
- Bluetooth synchronization with iOS and Android phones, plus automatic time and date adjustment.
- Over-the-air firmware updates and cloud connectivity.
- Additional sensors on selected models, such as temperature, altitude, pressure, UV, motion or direction.
MMT said its platform supported Apple and Android smartphones worldwide, had been tested on more than 100 phones and was used in more than 70 countries. Those are the company’s own platform claims, not independently audited compatibility or performance measures. The practical trade-off was deliberate. MMT advertised “2+ years” of battery life for applicable configurations, aiming for maintenance closer to a quartz watch than to a rechargeable smartwatch. That figure is a vendor claim for relevant models, not a guarantee for every watch or a statement about the remaining life of a used example.

Which brands and watches used MMT technology?
The 2015 launch partners were Frédérique Constant, Alpina and Mondaine. MMT’s later materials also identify Movado and Ferragamo among brands that implemented its modules. A brand’s participation does not mean all its watches used MMT, or that models shared identical apps, sensors or features. MMT’s company site

- Alpina: MMT identifies its MMT-283 module with the AlpinerX Outdoors Smartwatch.
- Mondaine: The Swiss brand was among the original launch partners.
- Movado and Ferragamo: MMT later listed these brands among users of its technology.
MMT’s references to calibers such as MMT-286 and MMT-287 concern connected modules in later products. In this context, “caliber” does not necessarily mean a conventional mechanical movement. Nor should all MMT-powered watches be confused with a mechanical hybrid such as Frédérique Constant’s Hybrid Manufacture, which combines a mechanical movement with connected functionality.
How ownership depended on the phone and app
For compatible older Frédérique Constant and Alpina watches, pairing generally began in the brand’s companion app or MMT-365, not in the phone’s Bluetooth menu. The exact app depended on the watch generation and model. MMT-365’s Apple App Store listing describes activity, sleep, goals and coaching features and names watches from Alpina, Frédérique Constant, Ferragamo, Mondaine and Movado. For an owner whose watch will not connect, sensible checks include confirming the exact model’s app, testing the battery, enabling Bluetooth and required permissions, and removing an old pairing before restarting setup in the app. On Android, check location permission as directed by Frédérique Constant. If a watch is being bought used, ask the brand or MMT whether its specific app and services still work before treating connected features as part of the purchase.

Why watch brands wanted this approach—and what it could not do
A shared OEM platform offered established watchmakers a way into connected wearables without independently building every layer of electronics, firmware, apps and cloud infrastructure. It also let them preserve familiar case and dial design, while MMT handled much of the integration. For a buyer who values a traditional watch appearance and basic activity or sleep tracking, the low-maintenance proposition was distinct from a touchscreen-first device.

The compromise was less interactivity and a narrower software ecosystem. These watches were not designed to match full-screen smartwatches for rich notifications, messaging, navigation, payments, cellular functions or broad third-party apps. Their usefulness also depended on a compatible phone app and, for some features, cloud services. A watch may continue to tell time even if an app, phone operating system or service no longer supports its connected functions.
MMT’s platform materials use terms such as “accurate” and describe sensor fusion, but those vendor descriptions should not be read as clinical validation. Likewise, MMT’s statement that it received ISO 13485 certification in December 2019 concerns a quality-management system for medical-device-oriented software and development; it does not establish that every consumer watch was authorized to diagnose, treat or prevent disease. Patents and the limits of headline numbers
MMT highlighted intellectual property covering areas such as smartwatch construction, displays, software, algorithms, machine learning and sleep monitoring. Its published counts are not consistent: the technology page says more than 60 issued patents and more than 10 pending, while the 2016 spin-out announcement refers to more than 150 granted and pending patents. Those figures come from different MMT materials and should not be combined into a single definitive count. Can you buy or rely on an MMT watch today?
MMT’s website continues to describe the platform, and MMT-365 remains listed in Apple’s US App Store. But current official US storefronts for Frédérique Constant and Alpina emphasize conventional collections rather than an actively marketed original MMT Horological Smartwatch line. That evidence does not establish that no new or remaining stock exists anywhere; it does mean a buyer should verify a specific model and seller rather than assume an active, broadly supported retail range. For a second-hand MMT watch, check the reference number, battery condition, correct companion app, phone compatibility and repair options before buying. Confirm whether the seller accepts returns if pairing fails. Battery replacement or module repair may require specialist service, and no universal current price or support status applies across the different brands and generations.
MMT’s importance is clearest as an early platform strategy: it translated wearable technology developed in Silicon Valley into products that traditional Swiss watch brands could design and sell under their own names. Whether a particular watch is still a good purchase is a separate, model-specific question shaped by app and service support as much as by the hardware.
