OMEGA’s Quantum Timer is not the movement inside an Olympic wristwatch. It is a professional sports-timing instrument designed to record elapsed time in extremely fine increments—down to one millionth of a second, according to OMEGA. At the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, however, official results did not come from that timer alone. They came from a synchronized system of starting devices, gates, photocells, sensors, timing software, photofinish cameras and sport-specific officiating.
The most visible new timing technology at the Games was OMEGA’s Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE photofinish camera, which could capture up to 40,000 images per second. That figure is impressive, but it should not be confused with a blanket guarantee that every Olympic result was accurate to 25 microseconds—or that every event was decided by a one-millionth-of-a-second measurement.
The short answer
At Milano Cortina 2026, OMEGA served as Official Timekeeper for the 32nd time since 1932, covering 116 events across eight sports. Its Quantum Timer provided microsecond-level timing capability within a much larger results system.

- Headline capability: OMEGA describes it as accurate to one millionth of a second, or one microsecond.
- Photofinish: the Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE camera captured up to 40,000 images per second at the finish line.
- Official result: determined using the complete technical system, visual evidence and the rules of the relevant sport.
OMEGA reported using approximately 300 timekeepers and 130 tonnes of equipment at the Games. Its post-Games summary said the operation produced more than 1.2 million results, including times, scores, ranks, distances and statistics. Those figures are OMEGA’s own reported totals, rather than independently audited performance statistics. OMEGA’s event report provides the operational details.

What is OMEGA’s Quantum Timer?
The Quantum Timer is best understood as the modern electronic equivalent of a professional stopwatch. OMEGA describes it as capable of timing to one millionth of a second. Its purpose is to receive precisely synchronized event signals and calculate elapsed time for sporting competition.
It is not:
- the mechanical movement in an OMEGA Speedmaster or Seamaster;
- a miniature device worn by an athlete;
- the sole instrument responsible for every Olympic result; or
- a feature that automatically makes a consumer watch suitable for official competition timing.
OMEGA’s public description establishes a very fine timing capability, but it does not publish a universal uncertainty specification covering every sensor, cable, synchronization stage, environmental condition and event at Milano Cortina 2026. Therefore, “one-millionth-of-a-second accuracy” should be presented as OMEGA’s description of the Quantum Timer—not as proof that every final Olympic result had one-microsecond total measurement uncertainty.
What does one millionth of a second mean?
One millionth of a second is one microsecond.
- 1 second = 1,000,000 microseconds
- 1 millisecond = 1,000 microseconds
- 1 microsecond = 0.000001 second
A microsecond is far shorter than the interval a person can reliably perceive in a sporting finish. It is also much smaller than the unit normally shown on a television graphic or printed in a results table.

The crucial distinction is between resolution, accuracy and precision:

A timer may work in microseconds internally while the sport reports results to thousandths or hundredths of a second. That is not a contradiction. The extra resolution can support reliable comparisons, synchronization and review even when the public result is rounded or governed by a coarser reporting rule.

The Quantum Timer was one part of a signal chain that can be summarized as:
Start signal → starting gate or pistol → timing device → photocells and sensors → photofinish → results system → officials

1. The start command
OMEGA’s electronic starting pistol creates a synchronized timing signal. The audible start heard by competitors must correspond with the electronic signal used by the timing system. False-start detection is a separate procedural and technical issue: a highly precise clock cannot correct an incorrectly synchronized or improperly interpreted start.
2. Starting gates
In sliding sports and other events where an athlete or sled begins from a defined mechanism, starting gates detect the relevant release or movement condition. The exact trigger depends on the sport and its rules.
3. Finish and split detection
Photoelectric cells and other sensors can detect when a competitor crosses a defined point. These systems are valuable because they can produce a rapid preliminary time. But the sensor must be positioned correctly and must detect the correct reference point—such as a body part, ski, sled, wheel or other sport-specific element.

The Quantum Timer records elapsed time from the synchronized start to the relevant finish or split signal. Its microsecond-level capability provides a very fine-grained measurement, but the quality of the final result still depends on the signals it receives.
5. Photofinish review
When competitors finish almost together, officials can inspect the photofinish image to determine order. This is especially important when displayed numerical times are identical or too close to distinguish after rounding.
6. Results distribution
Timing and scoring data are processed and distributed to officials, broadcasters, venue scoreboards and digital platforms. The first number shown on screen may be preliminary; the official result can follow technical checks and review.

7. Official adjudication
Finally, sport-specific regulations determine how time, rank, penalties, distances, scores and tie-break procedures become official. The clock supplies evidence. It does not replace the rules or the officials.

OMEGA identified the Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE photofinish camera as a notable first at the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina 2026. OMEGA says it could capture up to 40,000 images per second at race finishes. OMEGA’s post-Games summary describes the deployment.
At that capture rate, the nominal interval between successive images is:
1 second ÷ 40,000 = 0.000025 second
That is approximately 25 microseconds. But a 40,000-images-per-second specification is a capture-frequency figure, not a complete accuracy specification.
A photofinish camera does not simply record the finish like an ordinary television camera. It creates a time-based image of the finish line, allowing officials to examine which competitor reached that line first. The usefulness of the image depends on camera alignment, calibration, synchronization, finish-line geometry, image interpretation and the governing rules.

Consequently, it would be wrong to say that the camera is automatically “accurate to 25 microseconds” in every situation. Its high capture rate gives officials dense visual information; the total uncertainty of the result involves the whole system.
How precision matters in different Winter Olympic sports
Speed skating
Speed skating combines close finishes with repeated lap timing. Small differences can affect rankings and records, so high-resolution timing and finish-line imaging are particularly valuable. The photofinish image can provide the decisive visual evidence when numerical times are equal after rounding.

Alpine skiing
Alpine events rely on precisely placed timing gates and photocells. Here, the practical question is not merely how fine the clock is. It is also exactly where the course defines a split or finish, whether the correct athlete triggers the sensor, and how the signal is synchronized with the start.
Ski jumping
Ski jumping uses timing and measurement systems for parts of the performance, but the competition is not simply a race from start to finish. Distance, style and other scoring elements matter. A microsecond-capable timer contributes data; it does not by itself determine the winner.
Bobsleigh, luge and skeleton
Starting gates, split points and finish detection show where time is gained or lost along the course. A small difference at the start can accumulate or disappear over the run, making reliable start detection and synchronized intermediate timing essential.
Cross-country skiing
Multiple competitors may arrive close together, and the system may combine start information, intermediate splits, finish detection and visual confirmation. The final ranking depends on the event format and applicable rules, not on a single generic “Olympic accuracy” number.
Biathlon
Biathlon combines racing with shooting. Elapsed time matters, but missed targets and penalties also affect the result. Timing equipment therefore forms only one part of the competition’s results architecture.
Figure skating and big air
These are not conventional fastest-time-wins events. OMEGA used motion sensors and positioning systems based on computer vision and AI to support stroboscopic replays and augmented broadcast graphics in sports including figure skating and big air. Such systems provide performance data and visualizations; they do not replace judges’ scoring systems or independently decide the official winner. Why a one-microsecond timer cannot decide every close finish by itself
There is no single timing problem across all Olympic sports. A result can be affected by:

- the synchronization of the starting sound and electronic start;
- the reliability and placement of starting gates;
- the location and alignment of photocells;
- which part of an athlete or piece of equipment defines the finish;
- occlusion when competitors cross together;
- camera calibration and finish-line geometry;
- rounding and reporting conventions;
- penalties, distances or judging; and
- official review and protest procedures.
This is why “the Quantum Timer measures to one microsecond” and “the winner was determined by a one-microsecond difference” are not interchangeable statements. The first describes a device capability attributed to OMEGA. The second would require event-specific evidence about the entire measurement and adjudication process.
Quantum Timer versus an OMEGA Olympic watch
OMEGA’s Milano Cortina 2026 commemorative watches celebrate the brand’s Olympic role, but they are not the equipment that timed the races.

For example, the Seamaster 37 mm Milano Cortina 2026 uses OMEGA’s self-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8807, with testing certified by METAS. That certification concerns the performance of a wristwatch movement under defined tests; it is conceptually different from the Quantum Timer’s role in a venue-wide sports-timing system.
The Speedmaster 38 Milano Cortina 2026 is a mechanical chronograph with a 52-hour power reserve. It may appeal to someone seeking an Olympic commemorative chronograph, but it is not a Quantum Timer and cannot replicate official Olympic timing equipment.
What OMEGA reported after the Games
OMEGA said its Milano Cortina 2026 operation covered:
- 116 events across eight sports;
- approximately 300 timekeepers;
- 130 tonnes of equipment;
- more than 1.2 million results, including times, scores, ranks, distances and statistics; and
- seven Olympic records and one world record during the Games.
The last two figures are OMEGA’s post-Games summary and should be attributed as such. They also reinforce the central point: Olympic “timing” includes far more than the number on a stopwatch. It is a large technical and procedural operation producing many different kinds of competition data.
What “Quantum Timer precision” really means
For Milano Cortina 2026, the most accurate interpretation is this: OMEGA brought a microsecond-capable professional timer into a synchronized Olympic timing ecosystem, while its Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE camera supplied high-speed visual evidence at the finish line.
The result shown to viewers may be rounded. A photocell reading may be preliminary. A photofinish image may determine order. A penalty or judging score may change the outcome. And the governing sport may define the official result using rules that do not expose the instrument’s finest internal resolution.
That is not a weakness in the system. It is how a reliable competition result is produced: precise instruments, correctly defined triggers, independent visual evidence, fast data delivery and human officials applying sport-specific rules.
