Yes, T-Mobile really offered the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 without a trade-in—but this was a historical 2023 promotion, not a current Galaxy Watch5 deal. The watch was financed through T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan and offset with 24 monthly bill credits. Customers still had to add and maintain a qualifying paid wearable line, reportedly costing $15 per month before taxes and fees.

What the 2023 promotion actually offered
The deal covered a reported 40mm Galaxy Watch5 purchased on installments, with no watch trade-in required. According to contemporary coverage published on April 25, 2023, customers had to add a qualifying wearable/data line and use paired DIGITS service. T-Mobile then applied monthly bill credits over 24 months to offset the watch payments.
In other words, “free” meant free after bill credits, not a watch with no ongoing cost. The historical offer should not be confused with T-Mobile’s November 2022 promotion, which advertised the Galaxy Watch5 for $49 while offering the Galaxy Watch4 free with a watch-line addition. What “free” cost
The service line was not free. Historical coverage reported a $15-per-month qualifying plan, or about $360 over 24 months before taxes and fees. That means the economically accurate description is: T-Mobile could make the watch payments free, but you paid for the cellular service required to receive the credits.

The $329.99 figure is associated with T-Mobile Galaxy Watch5 promotional material, but it should be treated as an illustrative historical device price unless the customer’s original promotion code confirms the exact amount. Taxes are generally calculated on the full device price, and activation, device-connection, plan, and other account charges may apply.
How the bill-credit arrangement worked
- Choose an eligible cellular watch. The reported offer concerned the 40mm Galaxy Watch5. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE models are different products, and a cellular-line promotion normally requires the LTE version.
- Put the watch on an Equipment Installment Plan. The device was financed rather than discounted to zero immediately.
- Add the qualifying wearable line. The reported terms required a new qualifying wearable/data line with paired DIGITS service.
- Keep the account eligible. The line and account generally had to remain active and in good standing for the full 24-month credit period.
- Check the credits. T-Mobile’s general promotion language says credits can take up to two billing cycles to appear.
The historical coverage referred to new customers, but that limitation should not be generalized to every version of T-Mobile’s smartwatch promotions. What happens if you cancel or pay off the watch?
Bill-credit offers are conditional. T-Mobile’s current promotional language generally warns that canceling the account or qualifying line before all credits are received can stop future credits and leave the remaining Equipment Installment Plan balance due. Paying off the device early may also end the credits. Current terms are useful for explaining the mechanism, but a customer from 2023 should rely on the terms attached to that original promotion.
Before canceling the wearable line, changing plans, closing the account, or paying off the watch, ask T-Mobile how the action affects the promotion. Save the answer, order confirmation, promotion code, and terms. If credits are missing after two billing cycles, contact T-Mobile with the order number and documentation.
Was a trade-in required?
No. The historical Galaxy Watch5 offer described here was based on adding qualifying service and purchasing the watch on installments—not trading in another watch.

That does not mean every T-Mobile Galaxy Watch promotion has the same structure. Separate offers may involve a watch trade-in, a buy-one-get-one deal, another Samsung-device purchase, a higher-tier phone plan, or switching from another carrier.

The historical reports identify the 40mm version, apparently the LTE/cellular model sold through T-Mobile. Confirm the exact SKU before ordering: the 40mm and 44mm watches can have different prices and credit limits, while a Bluetooth-only model generally cannot use a cellular watch-line promotion.
T-Mobile’s 2022 announcement separately listed Galaxy Watch5 40mm and 44mm products and should not be treated as proof of the exact 2023 free-watch terms. T-Mobile’s holiday announcement advertised the Watch5 for $49 and the Watch4 as the free-watch offer.

Can you move the promotional line to another watch?
Do not assume so. Community reports about transferring a promotional watch line are conflicting, with some users reporting that another compatible watch worked and others describing restrictions tied to the original device or its EID. Those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal rule.
Ask T-Mobile to confirm, in writing, whether the promotion and line can move to another device and whether the new watch’s EID is eligible. Changing devices without that confirmation could jeopardize service or promotional credits.

The promotion made the most sense for an existing or prospective T-Mobile customer who genuinely wanted LTE smartwatch service and could keep the line active for two years. Cellular connectivity is useful for calls, messages, streaming, safety features, or exercise when the phone is not nearby.

It was a weaker deal for someone who always carries a phone, wants a one-time purchase with no recurring charge, dislikes 24-month commitments, or could buy a newer Bluetooth watch outright for less than the required service cost. Over two years, the reported $15 monthly service charge alone was roughly $360 before taxes and fees—more than the reported $329.99 watch price.
How to evaluate the offer before ordering
- Confirm that T-Mobile still displays the promotion; do not rely on a 2023 article.
- Verify the exact watch model, LTE capability, SKU, promotion code, credit amount, and 24-month duration.
- Confirm the eligible wearable plan and whether paired DIGITS service is required.
- Ask about taxes on the full device price and any activation or device-connection charges.
- Check whether recent wearable-line cancellations, plan changes, or other discounts affect eligibility.
- Save screenshots of the checkout page, terms, and order confirmation.
- Review the first two bills to ensure the promotional credit appears.
Current status in 2026
The no-trade-in Galaxy Watch5 promotion should be treated as expired unless T-Mobile shows a live offer or official terms for your account. T-Mobile’s current pages promote newer Samsung watches, including the Galaxy Watch8, with the same broad model of an eligible wearable line and 24 monthly bill credits. A current “On Us” device still does not mean cost-free ownership: the qualifying line, taxes, fees, and commitment period remain important. If you want to avoid a recurring cellular charge, compare a Bluetooth watch purchased outright or an older Galaxy Watch5 sold through a reputable retailer. Do not assume an LTE watch bought elsewhere will receive the historical T-Mobile credits.
