On an Apple Watch running watchOS 10, press the side button to open Control Center, then tap Water Lock. The display will stop responding to ordinary touches. To unlock the watch afterward, press and hold the Digital Crown until the watch unlocks and plays tones to clear water from its speaker.
Turn on Water Lock manually
- Wake the Apple Watch if needed.
- Press the side button once to open Control Center. On watchOS 10, this replaces the older swipe-up method. See Apple’s guide to Apple Watch buttons and gestures.
- Scroll through Control Center if needed, then tap Water Lock.
When Water Lock is active, its icon appears at the top of the watch face and the touchscreen no longer accepts normal touches. Some supported gestures, including Double Tap and wrist-flick gestures, are also unavailable. The lock can help prevent accidental input from wet hands, rain, sweat, clothing, or sports equipment, but you cannot use the touchscreen normally until you turn it off.
Water Lock is useful when swimming without starting a swimming workout or when exercising in heavy rain. Apple also describes it as a way to avoid unintended taps caused by exercise or gear in its Workout settings guidance.

Turn off Water Lock and clear water from the speaker
- Press and hold the Digital Crown.
- Keep holding until the watch indicates that it is unlocked.
- Let the series of tones finish. They are intended to eject water remaining in the speaker.
The touchscreen should work normally again once the watch unlocks. The tones clear water from the speaker; they do not dry the entire watch or guarantee recovery from liquid damage. Apple explains the feature in its Water Lock and water-ejection instructions.

Does Water Lock activate automatically?
It can. Starting a supported water-based workout, such as swimming or surfing, can turn Water Lock on automatically. Apple Watch Ultra models also activate it when the wearer begins a scuba dive. After a swimming workout, Apple’s swimming instructions describe using the side button, tapping Water Lock, and then holding the Digital Crown to unlock and clear the speaker.
Water Lock does not turn on merely because the watch detects any contact with water, so activate it manually when you want the screen locked outside a supported workout.

What if the Water Lock button is missing or the screen seems frozen?
- Control not immediately visible: Press the side button, then scroll through Control Center. Controls can be customized, rearranged, or removed, so check its layout if the control is absent. Apple’s Control Center guide covers its controls and layout.
- You followed a swipe-up instruction: That method is for older software. On watchOS 10, press the side button to open Control Center.
- Screen will not respond to touch: This is expected while Water Lock is active, not necessarily a fault. Press and hold the Digital Crown until the watch unlocks rather than repeatedly tapping the screen.
- Speaker still sounds muffled: If Water Lock is active, complete the unlock and tone sequence. Let the watch dry naturally. If the sound remains abnormal after drying, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Water Lock does not make the watch waterproof
Apple describes Apple Watch as water-resistant, not waterproof. Water Lock is a screen-input lock and speaker-clearing feature; it does not improve the hardware’s water-resistance rating. Suitability depends on the watch model and activity:

Apple says models other than Ultra or later should not be used for diving, water skiing, or high-velocity water activities. Water resistance can diminish over time, and Apple says it cannot be rechecked or resealed. Check Apple’s water-resistance and care guidance for your model and activity. For Ultra diving features and their limits, consult Apple’s underwater measurement and depth guidance.

Care for the watch after water exposure
- Wipe it with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth; do not use heat, compressed air, sprays, or objects in the speaker or microphone openings, and do not shake the watch to remove water.
- After swimming, gently rinse Series 2 and later with lightly running, warm, fresh water, then dry the watch and band thoroughly.
- If soap, shampoo, sunscreen, detergent, perfume, oil, hair dye, or another substance gets on the watch, rinse it with fresh water. Water Lock does not neutralize chemicals, salt, or pool substances.
Using Water Lock on watchOS 8 or earlier
The unlock gesture differs on older software: Apple’s instructions for watchOS 8 or earlier say to rotate the Digital Crown to turn off Water Lock. Do not mix that legacy instruction with the watchOS 10 procedure, which is to press and hold the crown. Control Center navigation also differs on older versions.
