If your child’s watch was set up with Apple Watch For Your Kids—formerly called Family Setup—you add ordinary contacts from the parent’s managing iPhone, not directly from the watch. During setup, choose trusted people from the managing iPhone’s Contacts app. After setup, go to Apple Watch app → My Watch → Family Watches → your child’s watch → Contacts.
This process is different from an Apple Watch paired normally to a child’s own iPhone.
First, identify how the watch was set up
There are two different Apple Watch arrangements, and the correct contact procedure depends on which one you use.

Apple Watch For Your Kids (Family Setup)
This is Apple’s child-focused setup for a family member who does not have their own iPhone. The parent or guardian manages the watch from the iPhone used during setup. Contacts are selected as a shared or trusted list rather than being copied wholesale from another iPhone.

Apple Watch paired to the child’s iPhone
If the watch is paired normally to your child’s iPhone, use the ordinary Contacts and Screen Time controls on that iPhone and through Family Sharing. The Family Watches contact-management screen is primarily for a watch configured with Apple Watch For Your Kids.
What you need before adding contacts
- The child must be part of your Family Sharing group.
- You must be the Family Sharing organizer or a designated parent/guardian.
- The child needs an Apple Account.
- The managing Apple Account must have two-factor authentication enabled.
- The watch must already be configured as a family member’s watch, or you must be ready to complete that setup.
- You need a compatible cellular Apple Watch. Apple’s newer watchOS guide lists a cellular Apple Watch SE or Series 6 and later. Another Apple Support page says Series 4 or later with cellular, or Apple Watch SE. Because Apple’s pages are not fully consistent, check the current requirements shown by Apple and your setup screen before buying or resetting hardware.
- iCloud Contacts must be enabled on the managing iPhone.
- Apple Watch For Your Kids must be available in your country or region and supported by your carrier.
A cellular plan is not required simply to complete setup, but cellular service may be needed for calls, messages, location sharing, and other functions when the watch is away from Wi-Fi. Apple also warns that some corporate cellular plans do not support Apple Watch For Your Kids.

On the iPhone that manages the child’s watch:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud.
- Find Contacts under the iCloud-saved apps or Saved to iCloud section.
- Turn on contact syncing if it is off.
Apple changes wording and grouping slightly between iOS versions, so use the Contacts control shown on your iPhone. Without iCloud Contacts enabled, the trusted-contact selection process may not appear or may not show the people you expect. See Apple’s family-member setup instructions.
Add contacts during initial setup
When setting up the watch for the first time:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the parent’s iPhone.
- Tap All Watches, then Add Watch if setup does not start automatically.
- Choose Set Up for a Family Member.
- Pair the watch and select the child, or add the child to Family Sharing when prompted.
- Continue through the Apple Account, passcode, Wi-Fi, cellular, and feature settings.
- When asked to configure shared contacts, choose the trusted people from the parent’s Contacts app.
- Finish setup and create a Screen Time passcode.
The selected people become available for ordinary communication on the managed watch. The child does not automatically receive every contact in the parent’s address book.

Add or change contacts after setup
Use the iPhone that originally manages the watch:
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Under Family Watches, select the child’s watch.
- Tap Done if the app presents a management screen requiring confirmation.
- Tap Contacts.
- Choose or change the trusted contacts available on the watch.
Menu labels can vary slightly by iOS and watchOS version. If you do not see Family Watches, the watch may have been paired normally, you may be using the wrong managing iPhone, Family Sharing may not be configured correctly, or the watch, region, or carrier may not support Apple Watch For Your Kids.
Control who your child can contact
Adding someone to the watch’s trusted contacts list and allowing communication with that person are related but separate controls. Screen Time can limit the people and apps your child can use to communicate.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the managing iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Select the child’s watch under Family Watches.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Open Screen Time Settings.
- Configure communication limits and related parental controls.
- Create or enter the Screen Time passcode.
Depending on the setting and software version, restrictions may affect phone calls, FaceTime, Messages, iCloud contacts, and other supported communication apps. Downtime, Schooltime, and permitted-contact rules can also prevent a visible contact from being usable at a particular time. Apple’s documentation covers these controls in its communication-limits guidance.
Can your child add or edit contacts?
Not automatically. Apple documents an Allow Contact Editing control, but whether the option appears and works depends on the child’s account, device configuration, Screen Time settings, and current software.
On the parent’s iPhone, the documented path is:
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Select the child.
- Tap Communication Limits.
- Turn on Manage [child’s name]’s contacts.
- Turn on Allow Contact Editing if you want to permit it.
- Have the child approve the request on the child’s device, if prompted.
Apple’s iPhone documentation does not guarantee identical controls for every Apple Watch For Your Kids configuration, especially where the child has no iPhone. If the option is missing, continue managing the list from the Family Watches section of the Apple Watch app.

Trusted contacts are not emergency contacts
Shared or trusted contacts are the people selected for ordinary communication on the managed watch.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Emergency contacts are associated with Medical ID or Emergency SOS. Adding a person to the normal Contacts list does not automatically make that person an emergency contact. Apple lists Contacts and Emergency SOS as separate managed-watch settings, so configure emergency information through the appropriate Emergency SOS or Medical ID controls.
Communication Limits contacts are the people permitted by Screen Time rules. A person may be selected as a trusted contact but still be unavailable during Downtime, Schooltime, or another restricted period.
What your child can do with the contacts
The selected contacts become available for communication on the managed watch. Whether a call or message actually works still depends on several conditions:
- The watch must have Wi-Fi or suitable cellular service.
- The contact must have a usable phone number or Apple communication identifier.
- The relevant communication app or service must be supported and allowed.
- Screen Time, Downtime, Schooltime, and communication restrictions must permit the interaction.
Apple Watch For Your Kids does not provide every feature available when an Apple Watch is paired with a companion iPhone. Do not treat a trusted-contact list as a guarantee of unrestricted calling or messaging.

Troubleshooting missing or unusable contacts
The contact does not appear
- Confirm that the person exists in the managing parent’s Contacts app.
- Check Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Contacts and enable syncing.
- Make sure you are using the iPhone that originally manages the child’s watch.
- Open the correct watch under Family Watches.
- Check that the contact has a usable phone number or Apple communication identifier.
- Review Screen Time and communication limits.
- Allow time for synchronization and ensure the watch has a network connection.
The Family Watches option is missing
Check whether the watch was paired normally instead of being set up for a family member. Also verify Family Sharing membership, your organizer or parent/guardian role, the managing-iPhone account, regional availability, and hardware and carrier compatibility.
The child sees the contact but cannot call or message
Visibility is not permission. Check Screen Time communication limits, Downtime, Schooltime, cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity, the contact’s phone number or Apple Account address, and whether the relevant app or service is supported on the managed watch.
The watch was previously used
Erase a secondhand or previously configured watch before starting family-member setup. Apple specifically instructs users to erase a non-new watch first. Then begin again from Apple Watch app → All Watches → Add Watch → Set Up for a Family Member.
If the watch is paired to your child’s iPhone
Do not use the Family Setup instructions for this arrangement. Contacts generally come from the paired iPhone. Manage the child’s permitted communication through the child’s Apple Account, Family Sharing, and Screen Time, using Apple’s parental-control guidance for the current iOS version.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add contacts without giving my child an iPhone?
Yes, when the watch is configured with Apple Watch For Your Kids and meets Apple’s hardware, account, region, and carrier requirements. The parent selects and manages contacts from the managing iPhone.

Do contacts need to own an Apple Watch?
No. A contact generally needs a usable phone number or supported Apple communication identifier, but does not need their own Apple Watch.
Can I manage the watch from another parent’s iPhone?
The Family Watches controls are tied to the iPhone and Apple Account used to manage the watch. Start with that iPhone; another parent may not see the same management options.
Can a Wi-Fi-only watch call the selected contacts?
Setup may be possible without a cellular plan, but communication away from Wi-Fi requires suitable cellular service. A Wi-Fi-only watch is not equivalent to a cellular child-safety setup.
Which Apple Watch models support this feature?
Apple’s newer watchOS guide lists a cellular Apple Watch SE or Series 6 and later. A separate Apple Support page gives older Series 4-or-later wording. Because Apple’s published requirements differ, verify the current model and cellular requirements before purchase or setup.
