On a family-managed Apple Watch, change the face directly on the watch: wake it, touch and hold the current face, swipe to the face you want, and tap it.
Apple now calls this managed arrangement Apple Watch For Your Kids. Many people still call it Family Setup. Family Sharing connects the family accounts, but it does not automatically give the organizer remote control over every watch setting.
Change to a watch face already installed
- Wake the Apple Watch until the current face is visible.
- Touch and hold the center of the face.
- Swipe left or right through the faces already added.
- Tap the face you want to use.
This is the most reliable method for a watch configured through Apple Watch For Your Kids, and the organizer’s iPhone does not need to be nearby for this manual change.

- Touch and hold the current watch face.
- Swipe left all the way to the end of the face collection.
- Tap the Add (+) button.
- Choose a category or browse All Watch Faces.
- Select a face, then tap Get and Add.

Not every face is available on every Apple Watch. Availability can depend on the watch model, watchOS version, installed apps, and region.
Customize complications
Complications are the small information panels on a watch face, such as weather, activity, battery, or calendar information. They are customized separately for each face.

- Swipe to the complication-editing screen.

- Choose an available complication, or choose Off where that option appears.
- Press the Digital Crown or tap the face to finish.
The available complication positions and choices vary by face and by the apps installed on the watch.
Make switching faces easier
For faster switching, enable direct swiping:
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap Clock.
- Turn on Swipe to Switch Watch Face.
The wearer can then swipe left or right from the active face to move between faces. If the screen changes faces accidentally because of sleeves, brushing, or frequent movement, turn this setting off and use the touch-and-hold method instead.
Can a parent change the face from an iPhone?
For a watch paired normally with the wearer’s own iPhone, the standard method is Apple Watch app → Face Gallery. Choose a face, customize it, and tap Add to Watch. Apple says a face added through Face Gallery becomes the current face.

That workflow should not be assumed to work as a remote face selector for a managed family watch. On the organizer’s iPhone, managed watches are found under Apple Watch app → All Watches → Family Watches. Apple documents settings such as General, Cellular, Accessibility, Screen Time, Photos, Health, and Messages there, but its current family-watch documentation does not list a dedicated remote watch-face selector.
Therefore, for Apple Watch For Your Kids, change or add the face on the watch itself rather than looking for a face control in the organizer’s iPhone settings.
See Apple’s current Apple Watch For Your Kids management guide for the supported management options.

Family Sharing versus Apple Watch For Your Kids
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Family Sharing | Apple’s account and family-group feature. |
| Apple Watch For Your Kids | A managed Apple Watch setup for someone who may not have their own iPhone. It was commonly called Family Setup. |
| Family Watches | The area in the managing iPhone’s Apple Watch app where managed family watches appear. |
A watch belonging to someone in your Family Sharing group is not necessarily a family-managed watch. If that person has their own iPhone and paired the watch normally, the regular Apple Watch app and Face Gallery are usually the appropriate tools.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the organizer’s iPhone need to be nearby?
No—not for manually switching faces on the watch. Apple’s approximately 33-foot (10-meter) Bluetooth-range guidance applies to setup, management, and software updates involving the managing iPhone, not to selecting a face directly on the watch.
Apple’s current documentation describes cellular-capable Apple Watch models for the family-member setup, with availability varying by country or region. Requirements can change by model and software release, so check Apple’s family-member setup requirements for the specific watch.

Troubleshooting
The face selector does not appear
- Confirm the watch is showing the actual face, not an app, notification, or another screen.
- Unlock the watch if it is locked.
- Touch and hold the center of the display instead of tapping briefly.
- Restart the watch if a long press does nothing.
- Update watchOS when possible.
- Check whether the watch is still completing setup or synchronizing.
- If Schooltime, Screen Time restrictions, or another restricted mode is active, test again outside that schedule.
Apple documents Schooltime and Screen Time as manageable family-watch features, but does not state that they universally block face changes. Treat them as troubleshooting possibilities rather than guaranteed causes.
The face you want is missing
It may not have been added, may be unsupported by the watch model or watchOS version, may be unavailable in the current region or software, or may have been removed from the face collection. Try the Add (+) option on the watch. Do not assume every face visible in an organizer’s Face Gallery is compatible with a managed watch.
The organizer cannot find the watch
Verify that the iPhone is the one used to set up or manage the watch, that the watch was configured for a family member rather than paired as the organizer’s personal watch, and that the family member is in the Family Sharing group. Also check the organizer or parent/guardian role, watchOS and iOS versions, watch model, cellular requirements, and regional availability.
The wearer wants a photo face
A Photos face still has to be added through the available watch-face workflow. The organizer’s Photos setting for a managed watch controls which album and how many photos the watch can display; it is not necessarily a remote command to activate the Photos face.
For general setup information, consult Apple’s Apple Watch setup guide.
