You can change an Apple Watch face on the watch or in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. To add one, use the watch’s face picker or open Face Gallery on iPhone; from there you can adjust the face’s design and compatible complications before adding it. The steps below follow Apple’s watchOS 26 guide; labels and available faces can differ by software version, watch model, and country or region.
A face is the clock design, while complications are the information or app shortcuts placed in designated areas. Apple provides the faces in its gallery; third-party apps can supply complications, but Apple’s documented workflow is not a general-purpose editor for installing arbitrary third-party face designs.
Change to a face already on your watch
On Apple Watch: Show the current face, touch and hold the display, then swipe left or right through your saved faces. Tap the one you want. This long-press picker is the reliable way to switch.
You can also swipe directly between faces if the option is enabled. On the watch, open Settings > Clock and turn on Swipe to Switch Watch Face. If swiping does nothing, use the long-press picker instead.

On iPhone: Open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then find the face under My Faces. Select the face you want; if it does not become active as expected, choose it from the watch’s face picker.
Add a face
From Apple Watch
- Show the current face and touch and hold the display.
- Swipe left to the end of your saved faces and tap Add.
- Browse the available categories or the full face list, then select a face. Depending on the screen, you may see Get before Add.
- Adjust its options if you like, then save it and select it to make it active.
From iPhone Face Gallery
- Open the Apple Watch app and tap Face Gallery.
- Choose a category, then tap a face to see its preview and options.
- Set the available design choices, such as color or style.
- Tap each complication position you want to configure and choose an option. Choose Off if you want a position left empty.
- Tap Add to Watch.
Face Gallery is useful for comparing a face’s design and settings on the iPhone screen. Categories, names, and controls can change with watchOS.
Customize a saved face
On the watch: Show the face, touch and hold it, then tap Edit. Swipe through the editing panels. Tap a setting—such as color, style, dial, or a complication position—and turn the Digital Crown to browse choices where available. Press the Digital Crown to save, then tap the face.

Not every face has the same controls. Some offer color or style choices only; others allow several complications. If you want two different layouts of the same design, save another version before changing the existing one. Editing a saved face changes that saved configuration, so a duplicate lets you keep, for example, a work layout and a workout layout.

Choose and change complications
Complications are the small information displays or shortcuts built into certain faces. Depending on the face and your installed apps, choices can include Calendar, Weather, Activity, Battery, Timer, Heart Rate, Maps, Reminders, World Clock, or third-party app information.
To change a complication on the watch, touch and hold the face, tap Edit, then swipe to the complication panel. Tap the position you want to change and turn the Digital Crown to browse its available options. Press the Crown to save.
On iPhone, open the face in Face Gallery or under My Watch, tap a complication position, and select from the list. When setting up a new face in Face Gallery, finish with Add to Watch.
The list depends on both the face and the specific position: a complication available in one corner may not be offered in another, and some faces have no complication slots. If an option is missing, see the troubleshooting section below.
Organize your face collection
View and reorder faces
On iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, and scroll to My Faces. Tap Edit in that section, then drag the reorder control beside a face to move it. On the watch, touch and hold the current face; then touch and hold a face in the picker and drag it left or right.

Put frequently used faces near the start of the collection to reach them sooner.

On the watch, touch and hold the current face, swipe to the face you want to remove, swipe up on it, and tap Remove. On iPhone, open My Watch, tap Edit beside My Faces, tap the delete button next to the face, and confirm Remove. Removing a face takes it out of your collection; you can add it again later.
Use a photo as a face
Choose the Photos face in Face Gallery when you want a personal image on your watch. Depending on the available workflow and watchOS version, you can choose photos or use a synced album. This is a photo-based version of an Apple face, not a free-form editor for positioning every element or building any layout you want. The photo’s crop and the clock’s placement affect readability, so a busy or high-contrast image may make the time and any complications harder to see.

Share a face
To send a face, open the Apple Watch app, select a face in your collection or Face Gallery, tap Share, and choose a method such as Messages or Mail. To add one you receive, open its message, email, or link, tap the face, then tap Add.

Apple says recipients need an Apple Watch running watchOS 7 or later to receive shared faces. A shared face may include a third-party complication. If the required app is not installed, the recipient may be prompted to download it or continue without it; in the latter case, the face can be added without that app’s complication. What is available can also depend on the recipient’s model, software, region, and apps.
Switch faces automatically with Focus
Focus can show a chosen face when a Focus becomes active. On iPhone, open Settings > Focus, select a Focus such as Work, Personal, or Sleep, and under Customize Screens tap Choose beneath the Apple Watch image. Select a face and tap Done.
This is Focus-based switching, not a separate universal face timetable. A different face appears when its Focus is activated, whether manually or according to that Focus’s configured schedule. Focus settings can be shared between iPhone and Apple Watch when that sharing is enabled.
Show the time ahead
To set the displayed watch-face time ahead by up to 59 minutes, open Settings > Clock on the watch, tap +0 min, and turn the Digital Crown to choose the offset. This changes only the time displayed on the face. It does not change alarms, notifications, World Clock, or other system times.

- At-a-glance information: Choose a face with several complication positions for items such as Calendar, Weather, Activity, or Timers. More information can make the display feel crowded.
- A simple clock: Pick an analog or digital face with few or no complications. It is visually cleaner, but you may need to open apps to check information.
- Fitness: Put useful options such as Activity, Workout, Heart Rate, or Timer on a compatible face. Availability depends on the face, apps, model, and region; a complication is not a substitute for medical advice.
- Travel: Consider World Clock, Weather, Maps, Compass, and Calendar. The face may not support every choice or position.
- Personal photos: Use the Photos face when the image matters more than dense information, and check that its crop leaves the time legible.
- Different contexts: Save separate face variations for work, exercise, or evenings; use Focus if you want a selected face to appear when a context changes.
When a face or complication is missing
A face does not appear in the Add list
- In Face Gallery, look for See All Watch Faces rather than assuming the current category shows everything.
- Check that the watch and iPhone software are up to date.
- Confirm your watch model and check Apple’s face availability information. Apple says the available faces vary by software version, country or region, and model; compatibility with a watchOS release does not guarantee that every face or feature works on every model.
- If a face should be available but still does not appear, restart the watch and iPhone and check again.
Apple’s watchOS 26 model compatibility guide lists compatible models, but face availability can be more limited than software compatibility. Check the current guide for your location and device.

A complication is not in the list
First check that the face supports complications and that the position you selected accepts the option. Try another position, then check whether the app that provides the complication is installed and updated and offers Apple Watch support. You can also try configuring the face in Face Gallery on iPhone. Some choices may not be available for your model, software, or region.
A shared face lacks an app complication
This can happen when the recipient does not have the app that supplies it. Install the app if it is available and wanted, or add the face without it; the face itself may still be usable.
Swiping does not change the face
Check Settings > Clock > Swipe to Switch Watch Face. If the setting is enabled but the gesture still fails, use the touch-and-hold face picker.
The active face changes unexpectedly
Review your iPhone’s Settings > Focus assignments. A Focus configured with a watch face can show it when that Focus activates, including through a schedule.
