Apple Watch separates volume by sound category, not by every app. Use Sounds & Haptics for notifications, ringtones, alarms and timers; Siri Responses for Siri and spoken workout feedback; the media control for music and podcasts; and the Digital Crown during a call for the caller’s voice.
This guide covers watchOS 9 through watchOS 26. Menu wording can vary slightly by software version or region.

Which Apple Watch control changes which sound?
| Sound | Where to adjust it | Control type |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications, ringtones, alarms and timers | Settings > Sounds & Haptics | Persistent alert volume |
| Siri and spoken workout feedback | Settings > Siri > Siri Responses > Voice Volume | Persistent voice volume |
| Music, podcasts and other media | Digital Crown during playback, or Control Center > Volume | Media volume |
| Caller’s voice | Turn the Digital Crown during an active call | Contextual call volume |
| Wrist taps | Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics | Haptic strength, not speaker volume |
Apple does not provide a general per-app volume mixer. Changing the alert slider will not necessarily change Siri, media or call audio.
Change notification, ringtone, alarm and timer volume
On the Apple Watch
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics (called Sound & Haptics in some versions).
- On supported watchOS 26 models, check Automatically Adjust Volume:
- Tap Level and choose Louder, Default or Quieter; or
- Turn automatic adjustment off, then set a fixed level with the volume buttons or Digital Crown.
- On older software or unsupported models, use the ordinary volume slider.
In watchOS 26, automatic adjustment responds to surrounding noise for ringtones, notifications, alarms and timers. Apple lists the feature for Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Ultra 2 and later. It has a maximum ceiling, so Louder does not mean unlimited output. Turn it off if you need the same alert loudness everywhere.

From your iPhone
Open the Watch app, tap My Watch > Sounds & Haptics, then adjust the alert volume and haptic options.
Change Siri and spoken workout-feedback volume
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Siri > Siri Responses.
- Adjust Voice Volume (sometimes labeled Voice Volume – Speaker).
You can also open the iPhone’s Watch app and go to My Watch > Siri > Siri Responses. For a quick temporary adjustment, turn the Digital Crown while Siri is speaking. This voice channel is separate from alert volume and is also used for certain spoken workout feedback.
Change the caller’s volume
Start or answer a call on the watch, then turn the Digital Crown while the caller is speaking. This changes live call-listening volume; it is not a permanent setting in Sounds & Haptics. This procedure is documented in practical Apple Watch guidance from macReports and the Apple Support Community.

Change music, podcast and other media volume
While media is playing, turn the Digital Crown. You can also press the watch’s side button to open Control Center, tap the volume button and drag the slider. This is the media control, not the notification-and-alarm slider.
When AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones are connected, adjust volume while the relevant media is playing. The watch’s speaker-alert setting does not directly serve as a universal headphone media control.
Use haptics instead of louder sound
For quiet alerts that you can still feel, turn on Silent Mode from Control Center. Apple says haptic notifications can continue in Silent Mode. To make them stronger, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose Prominent (or Default or Off, depending on your preference).
A snug, comfortable band fit improves skin contact and haptic reliability. Crown Haptics, where available, is separate from notification haptic strength.
Recommended Free Tools
To mute a sounding notification quickly, cover the display with your palm for at least three seconds or until you feel a tap. If it does not work, check Settings > Gestures > Cover to Mute. Wake-up alarms are an exception and are not silenced by covering the display. Focus or Do Not Disturb can also suppress calls and alerts, while alarms may be treated differently.

Louder notifications, quieter Siri
Raise Sounds & Haptics for alerts, then lower Settings > Siri > Siri Responses > Voice Volume. These controls are independent.
Quiet alerts, but noticeable notifications
Enable Silent Mode and set Haptics to Prominent. This avoids audible interruptions while adding a stronger wrist cue.
Siri is silent in Silent Mode
Open Settings > Siri > Siri Responses and inspect the response-behavior option. Labels and choices vary by watchOS release; select the behavior you want rather than assuming Silent Mode must silence every Siri response.

“I raised the volume, but Siri is still quiet.”
You probably changed alert volume. Increase Siri Responses > Voice Volume, then ask Siri a test question. Turn the Digital Crown while Siri speaks if you need an immediate adjustment.
“The caller is still quiet.”
Make or answer a call on the watch and turn the Digital Crown during active call audio. The general alert slider does not replace this contextual control.
“The volume keeps changing.”
On compatible watchOS 26 hardware, check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Automatically Adjust Volume. Disable it for a fixed level, or change the automatic level.
“The volume slider is missing.”
Identify the source first. Media volume appears in Control Center when media is playing; alert volume is in Sounds & Haptics; call volume appears during a call; Siri volume is under Siri Responses. A control may also be unavailable on a particular model or software version.

- Check Silent Mode in Control Center.
- Check Focus or Do Not Disturb.
- Confirm alert volume in Sounds & Haptics.
- If only Siri is silent, check Siri Responses.
- Check whether audio is routed to Bluetooth headphones.
- Inspect the speaker opening for water or blockage; eject water if appropriate.
“I cannot feel taps.”
Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics, make sure haptics are not Off, and tighten the band enough for reliable skin contact.
What Apple Watch cannot separate
Apple’s documented settings provide category-level control, not independent sliders for every app, notification type, ringtone, alarm or contact. Notification delivery and app-specific behavior can be managed in the Watch app, but that is different from assigning each app its own volume.
For the official settings and model details, see Apple’s audio and notification settings guide and the watchOS 26 User Guide.
