To close an app on most Samsung Galaxy Watches, open Apps, tap Recent apps (the icon with two overlapping circles), then swipe up on the app. To clear the list, swipe to its end and tap Close all. If an app is frozen, use Force stop in the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected Android phone instead.
These actions are different: closing removes an app from Recent apps; force-stopping is a stronger troubleshooting step; uninstalling removes a removable app; restarting reboots the watch. Menu names and placement vary by model and software version. The steps below follow Samsung’s U.S. support guidance.
Close one app on the watch
- Wake the watch and press the Home/Power key to open the Apps screen.
- Tap Recent apps. Its icon looks like two overlapping circles.
- Swipe left or right through the app cards until you find the one you want to close.
- Swipe up on that app card.
This removes the app from the recent-apps list. It does not uninstall the app or necessarily prevent related background services from running. Samsung’s app-management guide and troubleshooting guide document the procedure, while noting that options can differ by model and software.
Close all recent apps
- Open Apps, then tap Recent apps.
- Swipe through the cards to the end of the list.
- Tap Close all.
On some older models, Close all appears at the bottom of the Recent apps screen instead of at the end of a scrolling list. This clears recent app cards; it is not the same as force-stopping every app.

Force-stop an app that is frozen or keeps crashing
If swiping the app away does not resolve a problem, use Galaxy Wearable on the Android phone paired with the watch. Make sure the watch and phone are connected, then follow the available path—labels vary by generation and app version:
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Apps or Watch settings, then open Apps or App info.
- Select the affected watch app.
- Tap Force stop, then tap Force stop again to confirm.
- Reopen the app on the watch.
Samsung documents this phone-based method for an app that remains unstable after being closed. Some software versions may also expose app controls in the watch’s Settings app, but there is no single on-watch force-stop path to rely on across all models. If that option is not available, use Galaxy Wearable.

If the watch or Recent apps screen is unresponsive
Try these steps in order, stopping when the problem is fixed:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Return to the Apps screen: press the Home/Power key, then try Recent apps again.
- Force-stop the affected app: use Galaxy Wearable as described above, if the phone is connected.
- Restart the watch: press and hold the Home/Power key until the restart interface appears, then choose the restart option.
- If the watch itself is frozen: on supported models, press and hold the Home/Power key and Back key together until “Rebooting…” appears. Do not choose Power off when trying this forced-reboot procedure. Button names or behavior can vary by model.
- Restart the connected phone if the app-management connection or the app problem persists.
- Check for updates to the watch software and the affected app.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app if it is removable and the problem continues.
- Consider a reset only as a last resort. Back up the watch first; a reset can erase data.
Samsung recommends restarting the watch and phone and checking for updates when an app freezes, crashes, or stops responding. See its troubleshooting instructions for model-specific guidance.

Wear OS and older Tizen watches
Samsung identifies Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS families in its Wear OS setup guidance; watches released before the Watch4 use Tizen. The Recent apps gesture is broadly similar, but app controls and screen layouts can differ.
| Watch generation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS models | Open Apps and Recent apps, then swipe up on a card. To remove a removable app, touch and hold its icon in Apps, tap Uninstall, and confirm. Phone management is generally under Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Apps. |
| Galaxy Watch3, Active2, and earlier Tizen models | Recent apps and app-edit screens may look different; Close all may appear at the bottom. Removing an app may require touching and holding the Apps screen to enter edit mode and using a delete or minus control. Galaxy Wearable may list management under Apps → Manage apps. |
These are generation-level distinctions, not a guarantee that every model has identical menus. Samsung’s app-management guide and Tizen developer documentation show why older interfaces may differ. Samsung’s cited support instructions are U.S. guidance; features and labels may vary by region, model, and software version.

Close, force stop, uninstall, or restart?
- Close: swipe an app card up in Recent apps. Use this for ordinary cleanup or to dismiss an app you are finished with.
- Close all: clear the recent-apps list in one action.
- Force stop: terminate a misbehaving app more directly. Use it for troubleshooting, not as a synonym for Close all.
- Uninstall: remove an app from the watch if the model and app allow it.
- Restart: reboot the whole watch when the interface or multiple apps are affected.
- Reset: erase and restore the watch as a last resort, after backing up.
Some preinstalled or system apps cannot be uninstalled. If there is no uninstall or delete control, the app may not be removable; depending on the model, you may be able to force-stop, disable, or hide it instead. Samsung says that apps cannot be uninstalled from Galaxy Fit devices, so these instructions are for Galaxy Watch models rather than every Samsung wearable.
Does closing apps save battery?
Samsung recommends closing apps that are not in use to conserve battery and enhance performance, but that is not a promise of a particular battery-life improvement. Closing a problematic or resource-heavy app can help; repeatedly closing every app is not a guaranteed fix for battery drain. If drain continues, look for a specific app or watch setting causing it, check for updates, and consult Samsung support rather than treating Close all as routine battery maintenance.

An app may reopen if you launch it again or use a related feature such as a workout, music playback, watch face, complication, notification, or phone sync. Closing its card does not uninstall it or guarantee that every related background activity stops.
Special cases and reset cautions
- Watch buttons or screen are difficult to use: if the phone and watch are connected, Galaxy Wearable may let you manage or uninstall apps from the phone.
- No uninstall option: the app may be preinstalled or otherwise not removable on that model. Do not assume every app can be deleted.
- LTE watch: after some reset or reactivation procedures, an LTE watch activated by QR code may need a new QR code to restore service. Check with your carrier or Samsung before resetting.
- Before resetting: back up through Galaxy Wearable. Samsung warns that reset can result in data loss.
- Phone compatibility: Wear OS Galaxy Watch setup depends on a compatible Android phone and Google Mobile Services; do not assume every phone can pair. Check the requirements for your specific watch and region.
For Samsung’s reset and recovery cautions, see its watch troubleshooting page.
