You can connect an Apple Watch to Strava in two different ways: record in the Strava app on the watch, or record with Apple’s Workout app and import eligible workouts through Apple Health. Use Strava on the watch for features such as Strava routes and Live Segments; use Apple Workout if you prefer Apple’s native workout experience. The two methods have separate setup steps and different sync limits.
Before you start
- For the current Strava Apple Watch app, Strava specifies watchOS 10.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later. Your watch must be paired with an iPhone, and Strava must be installed and signed in on the iPhone. See Strava’s Apple Watch app requirements.
- Have a Strava account and an internet connection for initial authorization and syncing. A compatible cellular watch may connect away from the iPhone; otherwise, syncing usually waits until the watch can reach the iPhone or a usable network.
- Allow only the Health data and device permissions needed for your chosen method. Heart-rate data, for example, will not appear just because the watch is paired or Strava is installed.
- Charge the watch before a long GPS activity. For a first check, make a short test recording and confirm it appears in Strava with the expected details.
Option 1: Record directly in Strava on Apple Watch
This is the better choice if you want to start and manage a Strava activity from your wrist, use Strava routes or Live Segments while recording, or record without carrying your iPhone. Strava says Apple Watch Series 4 and later can record supported activities without the phone being carried; setup and upload still depend on permissions and connectivity.
Install and authorize the watch app
- Install or update Strava on your iPhone and sign in.
- Open Apple’s Watch app on the iPhone, tap My Watch, find Strava, and tap Install if it is not already installed.
- Open Strava on the watch and follow the authorization prompts on the watch and iPhone. Allow the requested Health and Motion & Fitness access.
- To review Health access on the iPhone, go to Settings → Apps → Health → Data Access & Devices → Strava. Enable the data categories you want Strava to use, particularly Heart Rate and Workouts.
- If you did not see the expected prompt, open Strava on the iPhone and look under Settings → Manage Apps and Devices → Health → Connect with Health. Menu names can vary slightly with software versions.
Strava’s Apple Watch app guide covers the current installation and recording flow. Once authorized, open Strava on the watch, choose a sport, and wait for the countdown or skip it. Record your activity. To pause, swipe right and tap the pause control; to finish, swipe left and tap Finish. Review the summary and tap Save.
The activity uploads when the watch has a suitable network connection or can connect through the iPhone. A recording made away from the phone may therefore not appear in Strava immediately. The watch app can expose heart rate, Strava routes, Live Segments, watch-face complications and, for specified outdoor activities, live elevation. Compatible Bluetooth Low Energy heart-rate sensors are also supported; sensor compatibility depends on the device. See Strava’s heart-rate guidance.

Important limit: This import route covers workouts recorded with Apple’s native Workout app in the previous 30 days. A workout does not qualify simply because a third-party app wrote it into Apple Health. If automatic upload is off or a workout did not arrive, check the Health screen in Strava for a manual Import option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStrava can also write some Strava activity information to Apple Health, including route information, activity type, distance, time and calories. Route information from activities originally recorded by some third-party services, such as Garmin or Zwift, does not sync to Apple Health through this integration.

Manually import an Apple Workout
- In Strava, open You → Settings → Manage Apps and Devices → Health.
- Find the eligible Apple Workout and tap Import beside it, then confirm.
- If it appears to have imported but is absent from your feed, check for a duplicate. Strava does not allow duplicate activities; an activity with the same date and time may need to be removed before you try again.
If the workout is not listed, confirm it was recorded in Apple’s Workout app, is within the 30-day window, and Strava has the necessary Health permissions. Workouts written to Health by another app are not eligible for this import path.
Which method should you use?
| Your priority | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Strava routes or Live Segments during the activity | Strava app on Apple Watch | These are part of Strava’s recording workflow. |
| Apple’s native Workout experience | Apple Workout + Health | Record in Apple’s app, then import the eligible activity. |
| Record while leaving the iPhone behind | Strava app on the watch | Supported watch models can record without the phone; upload may wait for connectivity. |
| Move a recent Apple Workout to Strava | Apple Health import | Eligible native Apple Workout activities can be imported for up to 30 days. |
| Heart-rate data in Strava | Either, with permissions enabled | Health access and available source data matter; the recording method alone does not guarantee heart rate will transfer. |
Avoid recording simultaneously in Strava and another app that uses the watch’s GPS or active workout tracking. Strava warns that another recording app can interfere with the activity.

Troubleshoot Apple Watch and Strava
| Symptom | What to check or try |
|---|---|
| Strava is missing from the watch | Open Watch → My Watch on the iPhone and install Strava. Confirm Strava is installed and signed in on the phone, both devices are paired and synced, and their software meets Strava’s current requirements. Reopen Strava on both devices. |
| Activity is saved but not uploading | Bring the watch near the iPhone or connect it to a reliable network. Force-quit and reopen Strava on both devices, then restart them if needed. On the watch, open Settings → Unsynced and manually sync any listed activities. Avoid low-power conditions until the upload finishes. |
| Heart rate is missing | Check Apple Health → Browse → Heart → Heart Rate → Data Sources & Access and iPhone Settings → Apps → Health → Data Access & Devices → Strava. Allow Heart Rate and Workouts as needed. Force-quit Strava on both devices, restart them, and test another activity; temporarily disable Low Power Mode if the issue persists. Data that was not recorded or available to Strava cannot be added retroactively. |
| GPS or map data is missing | Review the relevant Health and Motion & Fitness permissions before the next recording. Check the watch’s connection and location recording conditions. Strava says missing GPS, map or health data cannot be restored after upload if it was unavailable at recording time. |
| Apple Workout does not appear | Confirm it was recorded with Apple’s native Workout app, is no more than 30 days old, and Health access is enabled. Check that Automatic Uploads is on or use the manual Import list. An existing duplicate may block the import. |
| Motion & Fitness permission is absent | On the iPhone, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Motion & Fitness and make sure Fitness Tracking is enabled. If it already is, toggle it off and back on, then reopen Strava and retry authorization. |
| Syncing or heart rate is unreliable in Low Power Mode | Temporarily turn Low Power Mode off while testing. It can contribute to delayed syncing and affect heart-rate recording behavior. |
For the direct watch-app workflow and current recovery steps, see Strava’s Apple Watch support page. For Health import eligibility and duplicate handling, see its Apple Health support page.

Health permissions and privacy
Connecting Strava to Apple Health is a data-sharing choice, not just Bluetooth pairing. Review which categories Strava can read and write, including workouts, routes, heart rate, power and cadence, and grant only what you want the integration to use. You can review access in Apple Health under Sources → Strava or in iPhone settings under Apps → Health → Data Access & Devices → Strava. Also review Strava’s app authorization settings if you want to audit third-party access; authorization can expose activity data and, depending on access, map or private activity information.

Power and cadence for cycling
Power and cadence are not guaranteed for every Apple Watch activity. Strava supports power and cadence data from Apple Health for cycling activities recorded with Apple’s Workout app when compatible sensors are connected and the relevant Health permissions are allowed. Strava’s documented HealthKit display requires iOS 17 or later, watchOS 10 or later, and Strava app version 403 or later; reconnecting Health may prompt for additional permissions. Strava also supports running power from HealthKit, but does not currently support running cadence in the same way. See Strava’s power and cadence documentation.
Quick Recap
Test before your next long workout
- Choose one recording route: Strava on the watch, or Apple Workout plus Health import.
- Check the required Health and Motion & Fitness permissions, including heart rate if wanted.
- Record and save a short activity. For Apple Workout, confirm Automatic Uploads is enabled or locate the manual Import option.
- Wait for connectivity, then check the Strava activity for the expected route, distance and heart-rate data. Fix permissions before a longer activity if anything is missing; absent recording data generally cannot be filled in afterward.
