A Wear OS watch can control media playing on your Android phone, and some watch apps can stream or play downloads without the phone. But Android 15 alone does not turn every smartwatch into a universal media remote. What works depends on the watch and Wear OS version, the media app, the connected audio device and whether you want to control phone playback, play from the watch or switch outputs.
Three different ways to control media from a watch
“Media control” can mean several things. Knowing which one you want makes setup—and troubleshooting—much easier.
- Control playback on your phone. The phone remains the source; the watch acts as a remote. Common actions include play, pause and track skipping. Seeking, volume, track details and other controls depend on the app and device. Google describes this phone-control use on Wear OS as requiring an active Bluetooth connection between the watch and phone (Google Wear OS).
- Play from the watch. A watch app streams content over Wi-Fi or LTE, or plays content downloaded to the watch. You may need Bluetooth headphones paired directly to the watch. This is different from controlling the phone and may require a service subscription for downloads or other features.
- Choose an audio destination. Depending on the watch, software and app, you may be able to route playback to headphones, a speaker or another supported device. This is more than pause-and-skip control: the destination itself changes.
A fourth possibility is a dedicated remote for a television or streaming device. For example, the Pixel Watch can control compatible TVs through Google Home; that is a Google Home feature, not a general Android 15 capability.

Does Android 15 enable it?
Not by itself. Basic phone-media control is a Wear OS capability and depends on a working phone connection and on the source app exposing compatible media controls. Android 15 is relevant to a narrower, newer platform feature: Android Developers say apps targeting Android 15 (API level 35) or higher can expose the built-in speaker on supported Wear OS devices in the media output switcher. That does not mean every Android 15 phone or every watch gains watch-speaker playback or output switching (Android Developers: Audio on Wear OS).

Google announced broader media management and output switching across headphones, home speakers and other devices with Wear OS 7 in June 2026 (Google’s Wear OS 7 announcement). Those newer capabilities should not be confused with the older, simpler function of controlling what is already playing on a phone. Availability depends on the watch, its software, the media app and the destination device.
Check compatibility before troubleshooting
- Watch: You need a Wear OS watch for the Wear OS features described here. Pixel Watch, recent Galaxy Watch generations and watches from manufacturers including OnePlus, Mobvoi, OPPO and Xiaomi are part of the Wear OS ecosystem, but their features and update availability are not identical. See Google’s Wear OS device information. Samsung confirms Wear OS on Galaxy Watch4 and later generations, including Watch Ultra models (Samsung support).
- Phone remote control: Pair the watch with the phone and keep their Bluetooth connection active. The media app must provide a compatible playback session.
- Standalone playback: Check that the service has an app for your watch, then confirm the watch has Wi-Fi or LTE for streaming, or the required content has been downloaded. Direct playback to headphones also requires those headphones to be paired with the watch, not just the phone.
- Output switching or watch-speaker playback: The watch, app, Android and Wear OS versions, and destination all need to support the specific route. Do not assume that a watch speaker can play every app’s audio.
Spotify, for example, documents Wear OS support for version 2.2 (based on Android 9) or newer, while warning that features vary by watch. Its watch app separates control of another device from playback over the watch’s own connection (Spotify support). That compatibility floor does not guarantee every newer feature on every watch.

Set up basic phone-media control
- Pair the watch with your Android phone using the manufacturer’s companion app.
- Install available phone and watch system updates, and update the companion app and the media app.
- Start playing audio or other media on the phone.
- On the watch, open the media controls—typically from an automatically opened control screen, a tile, a notification or the app launcher. The exact route varies.
- If the watch has an automatic media-controls setting, enable it so the controls can appear when playback starts.
On a Samsung Galaxy Watch: Samsung’s documented path for Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra is Settings → Advanced features → Media controls; enable Auto launch media controls and, if wanted, Show ongoing icon. For earlier Wear OS Galaxy watches, Samsung lists Settings → Display → Show media controls. Labels can vary with model and software, so search Settings for “media controls” if you do not see the listed option (Samsung’s model-specific instructions).
Use a media app directly on the watch
For phone-free listening, install the service’s Wear OS app from the watch’s Google Play Store, sign in and check its playback options. Spotify documents watch controls for music, podcasts and audiobooks, as well as the ability to control another Spotify Connect device or use the watch’s own connection. Supported Premium users can download content; streaming and downloads have different connection and account requirements (Spotify on Wear OS).

YouTube Music is also part of Google’s Wear OS media ecosystem (Wear OS). But controlling YouTube Music already playing on the phone, starting playback within the watch app, downloading content and changing the audio destination are separate actions. Their availability can vary by app version, watch and account.

Other Android apps may show up in the watch’s generic media controls if they expose a compatible media session. Seeing a media notification does not promise full queue browsing, seeking, volume control or output switching. Netflix, browser video, local players and podcast apps should not be assumed to behave alike.

Switch the output when the option is available
On a supported combination of watch, app and connected devices, start playback, open the media controls, open the output or device picker, and select the destination. Check the app’s screen afterward to confirm where playback is going. The label and location of the picker are not universal, and a destination must be available to the source app’s playback session. If the picker is absent, that does not necessarily mean basic play and pause control is broken; output switching has its own compatibility requirements.

Pixel Watch users can set up Google Home’s TV remote tile for a compatible TV added to Google Home, such as a Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV or compatible Google Home TV. The current Google Pixel Watch instructions say to open the watch’s Tile Library, add the TV remote tile, select the TV and use the tile for media controls, volume, a virtual D-pad and opening Google Home. The tile controls one TV at a time.

For volume-button setup, Google documents this watch path: Settings → Remotes & Accessories → Setup Remote Buttons → Volume Control, then choose the TV. This requires the Pixel Watch and Google Home-compatible setup; it is not a promise that any Wear OS watch can control any TV (Google Pixel Watch TV remote instructions).
Fix common problems

For a Pixel Watch TV-remote issue, Google’s support instructions also recommend checking Play Store updates and restarting the watch and phone; consult its TV remote troubleshooting guidance.
What to consider when choosing a watch
If your only goal is pause and skip, you may not need a new watch: phone lock-screen buttons or earbud controls can be simpler. For a watch purchase, focus instead on whether it supports the apps you use, whether it can stay connected to your phone, whether it has Wi-Fi or LTE for phone-free listening, and whether it pairs directly with your headphones. Treat built-in speakers and cross-device output switching as model- and software-specific features, not baseline Wear OS guarantees. Choose for ecosystem fit and the playback modes you will actually use—not the Android 15 label alone.
