You can change how Apple Watch Maps alerts reach you, but not redesign the turn signals themselves. Use the watch’s general haptic and volume settings to make alerts easier to feel or hear, or turn on Silent Mode to keep wrist taps while muting sound. Apple does not document a separate Maps alert-style setting or controls for replacing its left- and right-turn patterns. iPhone Maps spoken directions have their own settings and do not directly customize the watch’s taps.

Make Maps turn alerts easier to feel

On Apple Watch, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics, then choose Prominent. The available choices are Off, Default, and Prominent. Prominent adds an extra tap before some alerts, which is a good first setting to try if you miss navigation taps. It changes general watch haptics, however; Apple does not promise an extra pre-alert for every Maps event or provide a Maps-only intensity slider. Apple’s haptics and sound guidance explains the choices.

Fit matters too. Wear the watch snugly enough for its back to remain in contact with your skin, without making the band uncomfortable. A loose fit or clothing between the watch and your wrist can make taps harder to notice. If ordinary haptic alerts are also missing after checking settings and fit, Apple advises considering service.

Use navigation without sound

To mute audible alerts while keeping wrist taps available, press the Apple Watch side button to open Control Center and tap Silent Mode. Leave Haptics set to Default or Prominent; with Haptics set to Off, do not expect normal wrist taps. Silent Mode is a watch-wide sound control, not a Maps-only switch, and it does not by itself turn off haptic notifications.

Make audible alerts louder

On the watch, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and adjust the alert-volume slider. This is a general alert-volume control, not a Maps-specific volume setting.

Raising general alert volume may make other watch sounds more noticeable too. It does not guarantee a change to the iPhone’s spoken directions, which have separate controls.

What the Apple Watch Maps signals mean

Apple documents distinct tone sequences for turns, plus vibration cues near the destination:

Watch signal Meaning
Low tone followed by high tone Turn right
High tone followed by low tone Turn left
Vibration on the last leg and again at arrival Approaching the destination and arrival

These are built-in cues, not patterns you can replace with a custom sound or vibration. Apple’s Apple Watch Maps directions guide describes how they work.

Change spoken directions on iPhone separately

If you want to change voice guidance from iPhone Maps, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Spoken Directions. During active iPhone navigation, tap the Audio Control button to choose all spoken directions, audio alerts only, or no spoken directions, and to adjust voice volume where offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those settings govern spoken guidance from Maps on iPhone; they are not controls for the Apple Watch’s wrist-tap patterns or a dedicated way to change its turn tones. The watch may still provide its own sound-and-haptic cues when iPhone voice guidance is muted. Spoken turn-by-turn directions are not available in every country or region, and Apple notes that they require an internet connection and Precise Location. See Apple’s spoken-directions settings guide for the available iPhone options.

Check that a route and its alerts are active

Apple Watch Maps can give directions for supported travel modes such as driving, walking, cycling, or transit, but available modes depend on location. For turn-by-turn guidance, Location Services must be on. On the watch, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

Before setting off, make a short stationary check:

  1. Open Maps on Apple Watch, tap Search, and find a familiar destination.
  2. Tap the relevant directions option, use the Digital Crown to browse suggested routes, and tap a route to begin turn-by-turn directions.
  3. Confirm the route screen is active—not just a list of steps—and check that Location Services is enabled.
  4. Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics, Silent Mode, and alert volume against the kind of cue you want.
  5. Use a safe stationary check or a route where you can verify the signals without handling the watch while driving.

Set up and check the watch before departure. Navigation cues are aids, not a substitute for attention to the road.

Troubleshoot missing or weak alerts

Problem What to check
No taps felt Confirm Haptics is not Off; verify a route is active and Location Services is on; make sure the watch back touches skin and the band is snug. Silent Mode should mute sound, not haptics. If other haptic alerts are missing too, restart or update the watch; if the issue persists, consider Apple service.
No sound Check Silent Mode and the watch’s alert volume. Also check whether audio is routed elsewhere. Apple Watch Maps guidance is documented as turn tones and taps; do not assume that raising iPhone spoken-direction volume raises the watch’s tone volume.
No turn-by-turn guidance Confirm you selected a route and started navigation, Location Services is on, and the chosen travel mode is supported where you are. Transportation options vary by location.

Apple’s current documentation does not show a watchOS switch that disables only Maps navigation alerts while leaving every other watch alert unchanged. Silent Mode, Haptics, and Focus are broader controls; Focus should not be treated as a precise Maps-only navigation switch. Ending the route stops its navigation guidance.

Quick setup by preference

  • Stronger, discreet cues: Silent Mode on, Haptics set to Prominent, and a snug, comfortable fit.
  • Audible cues in a loud environment: Silent Mode off, raise general alert volume or choose Louder with automatic adjustment where supported, and consider Prominent haptics as a backup.
  • Voice-focused guidance: Keep watch sound available if desired, then adjust spoken directions separately in iPhone Maps. Be aware that watch and phone cues may overlap.
  • Fewer distractions: Use Silent Mode with Default haptics and review the route overview and turn list before leaving; default taps may be easier to miss.
