The fastest way to customize Smart Stack on watchOS 10 is to open it from the watch face, scroll to the bottom, tap Edit, and then add, remove, pin, or rearrange widgets. Pinning is the key step if you want a predictable layout; unpinned widgets can move when watchOS surfaces context-sensitive information.

Version note: These instructions describe watchOS 10, released on September 18, 2023. Apple changed Smart Stack behavior in watchOS 11 and watchOS 26, so newer software may show different labels, suggestions, or controls.

What Smart Stack does on Apple Watch

Smart Stack is a scrollable collection of widgets that sits behind the watch face. It gives you glanceable information without filling every complication slot on your chosen face. Unlike complications, Smart Stack widgets are not permanently visible: you open the stack and scroll through it.

It is also different from an iPhone Smart Stack. On Apple Watch, editing happens directly on the watch through Add Widget, Delete, Pin, and drag-and-drop controls.

Scroll to the bottom of the stack to reach apps such as Music, Workouts, and Messages, where available. Apple designed Smart Stack to be contextual, so weather, Wallet boarding passes, Calendar, Reminders, or a currently running app may become more prominent at relevant times.

Apple describes Smart Stack in its watchOS 10 announcement and documents its controls in the Apple Watch User Guide.

How to open Smart Stack in watchOS 10

  1. Return to the watch face by pressing the Digital Crown if necessary.
  2. Turn the Digital Crown upward.

You can also swipe upward from the bottom of the watch face. Double tap is another option on supported Apple Watch hardware running watchOS 10.1 or later; it is not available on every watchOS 10 model.

In watchOS 10, the side button opens Control Center. It does not open the old Dock view, so do not use the side button when you are trying to access Smart Stack. Apple’s buttons and gestures guide explains the updated navigation.

How to add a widget

  1. Open Smart Stack from the watch face.
  2. Scroll all the way to the bottom.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap Add Widget.
  5. Select the widget you want.
  6. If an Expand control appears, use it to choose an available option for that widget.
  7. Tap Done.

The picker only shows compatible widgets supplied by Apple Watch apps. Installing an app does not guarantee that it provides a Smart Stack widget. Depending on the app and your software, a widget may let you choose a list, category, accessory, or other information source.

How to remove a widget

  1. Open Smart Stack.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Edit.
  3. Tap the widget’s Delete button.
  4. Tap Done.

Remove widgets that duplicate information already visible as complications, take too many taps to be useful, or rarely solve a problem. A shorter stack is usually faster than trying to keep every available widget.

How to pin widgets so they stay put

Pinning creates a stable section for important widgets. It prevents those widgets from being displaced by ordinary context-sensitive suggestions, although it does not turn the entire Smart Stack into a permanently fixed list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Smart Stack and scroll to the bottom.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap the Pin button beside each widget you want to keep in a fixed position.
  4. Tap Done.

Pin a widget when you use it several times a day, need to find it predictably, or are frustrated by automatic reordering. Leave it unpinned when you prefer Smart Stack to surface travel, weather, calendar, or active-task information automatically.

How to reorder pinned widgets

  1. Open Smart Stack and tap Edit at the bottom.
  2. Touch and hold a pinned widget.
  3. Drag it to the position you want.
  4. Tap Done.

A practical arrangement is to put information you check repeatedly at the top, occasional utilities in the middle, and low-frequency widgets at the bottom. For example, Calendar, Reminders, Weather, or activity status may deserve the first positions, while Home, Battery, or less frequently used controls can sit lower.

Customize an individual widget

Not every widget offers configuration. When you add one, look for an Expand control. If it appears, use it to view the choices available for that widget.

Why Smart Stack keeps changing

Automatic reprioritization is a central part of Smart Stack rather than a malfunction. In watchOS 10, Apple gives examples such as weather becoming useful in the morning, boarding passes appearing during travel, Calendar and Reminders gaining prominence before meetings or tasks, and Podcasts becoming easier to reach while it is running.

Pin the widgets that must remain predictable, but expect other parts of the stack to remain dynamic. Apple’s later releases expanded this contextual behavior: watchOS 11 made Smart Stack more personalized, while watchOS 26 added Smart Stack hints using additional contextual, sensor, and routine information.

Live Activities are separate from ordinary widgets

Live Activities can appear at the top of Smart Stack while an activity is in progress. Examples include workouts, timers, music, and other ongoing activities. They are activity-driven rather than simply entries in your manually arranged widget list.

That means a timer or workout may temporarily take priority above your pinned widgets. On supported current software, Live Activity behavior can be managed under Settings > Smart Stack > Live Activities, but the exact options may differ from the original watchOS 10 interface.

Smart Stack versus complications

Use a complication when information must be visible immediately, without a Crown turn, swipe, or scroll. Use Smart Stack when you want several related pieces of information without crowding the watch face, or when an item is useful occasionally but not important enough to occupy a permanent complication.

Smart Stack does not replace complications. It is a second access layer. For detailed history, long lists, data entry, rich controls, or multi-step actions, open the full app instead.

Troubleshooting Smart Stack

I cannot find Edit

  1. Press the Digital Crown to return to the watch face.
  2. Turn the Crown upward to open Smart Stack.
  3. Scroll continuously to the very bottom.
  4. Look for Edit beneath the widgets.

If it is still missing, you may be viewing Control Center or another interface, or you may be using a later watchOS version with different controls. Confirm the installed software version and that the update completed correctly.

The widget I want is not listed

The app may not provide a Smart Stack widget, may not be installed or available on the watch, or may have a feature limited by region or software version. Some information is available only as a complication or inside the app. Check the Add Widget picker before assuming something is broken. Reinstalling an app is not a guaranteed fix unless the app is confirmed to support the widget and installation itself is faulty.

My widget keeps moving

That is expected for an unpinned, context-sensitive widget. Pin it, then reorder the pinned section if a stable position matters more than automatic suggestions.

A Live Activity keeps appearing above my widgets

This is expected while a supported timer, workout, media session, or other activity is running. Live Activities can occupy the top position independently of your manually arranged widgets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The instructions do not match my Apple Watch

These steps target watchOS 10. Apple has since added Smart Stack changes in watchOS 11 and watchOS 26. Current Apple documentation may therefore show different suggestions, hints, or Live Activity behavior.
