If your Apple Watch shows a yellow battery indicator, charge it to at least 80%, then press the side button, tap the battery percentage, and turn off Low Power Mode. You can also use Settings > Battery. If the watch is frozen, establish a reliable charging connection before trying a force restart.
First, identify what you are seeing
A yellow battery percentage, yellow charging animation, or yellow time in Nightstand mode usually means that Low Power Mode is active. Reduced background updates, delayed notifications, slower Siri responses, disabled Always On display, and fewer background health measurements can all be expected while it is enabled.
A red lightning bolt is different. It means the watch does not have enough power to turn on normally. Treat that as a charging or critically low-battery problem, not proof that Low Power Mode is stuck.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTurn off Low Power Mode normally
Using Control Center
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the battery percentage button.
- Tap the Low Power Mode control to turn it off.
Using Settings
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Turn off Low Power Mode.
These are the current watchOS paths. On older watchOS versions, Control Center opened by touching and holding the bottom of the screen and swiping up, so the gesture may differ on an older watch.
#1 Best Overall
- Durable, woven cable with fast-charging capabilities for select Apple Watch models. Simply hold the connector near the back of the watch, where magnets cause it to snap into place automatically.
- Supports fast charging on Apple Watch Series 7 and later and Apple Watch Ultra models. Supports regular charge times on all other models.
- Compatible with all Apple Watch
- USB-C Cable Length: 1m or 3.2 feet
Charge the watch to 80%
Low Power Mode may be offered when the battery reaches 10% or lower. If it was activated because of low battery, Apple Watch normally turns it off automatically after reaching 80% charge. This is a normal behavior check, not a guaranteed repair for a faulty charger, battery, or software problem.
There is an exception: Low Power Mode can be set to remain on for 1 day, 2 days, or 3 days. If you selected one of those options, disable it manually through Control Center or Settings > Battery.
Low Power Mode can also be configured to activate when a workout starts. Check Settings > Workout > Low Power Mode if the mode returns whenever you begin exercising.

If the watch will not charge
Do not repeatedly reset a completely flat watch. First verify that it is receiving power:
- Use the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable that came with the watch, if available.
- Push the cable fully into the USB power adapter and plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet.
- Place the back of the watch squarely on the magnetic charger until the charging symbol appears.
- Remove any protective plastic from the charging puck.
- Clean the watch’s back and the charger with a soft, dry cloth.
- Try another compatible Apple Watch charging cable and USB power adapter.
- Leave a completely depleted watch connected for up to 30 minutes before deciding that it is not charging.
Larger watches and some charging docks may need to be repositioned or laid flat to maintain magnetic contact. Avoid unverified or counterfeit chargers. Apple recommends Apple or MFi-certified charging equipment; poor-quality chargers can cause slow charging, repeated chimes, or reduced battery life. For supported fast-charging setups, Apple specifies a compatible watch and cable together with an 18W-or-greater USB-C adapter—higher wattage alone does not fix Low Power Mode.
On watchOS 26, a Slow Charger message may appear in Battery settings. That points toward charging equipment or charging conditions rather than a stuck power-mode setting.

What the red lightning bolt means
If the screen shows a red lightning bolt, the watch lacks enough charge to start. Connect it to a reliable charger and wait. The symbol may appear inside a ring while charging. Leave the watch connected for up to 30 minutes if necessary before attempting recovery.
If it still does not respond after charging, keep it connected and try a force restart. A red lightning bolt should not be confused with the yellow Low Power Mode indicator.
Restart or force-restart the watch
Use a normal restart when the watch responds
- Press and hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Use the on-screen power-off control.
- Wait briefly, then press and hold the side button to turn the watch on again.
Force-restart an unresponsive watch
- Keep the watch connected to its charger if possible.
- Press and hold the side button and Digital Crown together.
- Continue for at least 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears.
- Release the buttons and let the watch complete its startup.
A force restart can recover a frozen interface, but it cannot repair a defective battery, damaged watch, or failed charger. Charging is the first step when the battery is critically low.

Check battery health if the problem keeps returning
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
- Review Maximum Capacity and any service message.
Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. There is no single percentage that proves every battery needs replacement. Consider the reading alongside rapid discharge, unexpected shutdowns, repeated low-battery warnings, or failure to charge. If the screen says Battery Needs Service, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
If the problem began after a watchOS update
Battery life can be temporarily worse for a few days after an update while background tasks finish. If the watch only began entering Low Power Mode unusually soon after updating, wait a few days and check again before assuming the update permanently damaged the battery. Do not attempt to downgrade watchOS or install unofficial firmware.

- The watch never reaches 80% with multiple known-good chargers and adapters.
- It reports low battery shortly after being charged.
- It repeatedly shuts down or restarts.
- Battery Health reports Battery Needs Service.
- The screen remains blank after charging and a force restart.
- Low Power Mode returns immediately after being disabled and the watch has been restarted.
- The watch or charger is swollen, damaged, unusually hot, or emits an unusual smell.
Stop using a watch or charger showing swelling, physical damage, overheating, or an odor. Do not open the watch or attempt a battery replacement at home. Service estimates vary by model, region, coverage, inspection, tax, and provider; Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees.
Prevent the problem from recurring
- Use Apple or MFi-certified charging equipment.
- Keep the charging puck and the back of the watch clean.
- Make sure the watch is properly aligned on the magnetic charger.
- Check workout settings if Low Power Mode activates during exercise.
- Use Low Power Mode intentionally for long workouts or travel, rather than assuming every yellow indicator signals a fault.
- Remember that charging may pause around 80% because of Optimized Charging. That is not necessarily a failed battery; disabling optimization can increase battery wear.
The short version
For a responsive watch, charge past 80% and turn off Low Power Mode through side button > battery percentage > Low Power Mode, or through Settings > Battery. For a red lightning bolt or blank screen, troubleshoot charging first, wait up to 30 minutes, and then force-restart with the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds. Persistent charging, battery, heat, or shutdown problems require Apple service rather than another reset.
