If your Apple Watch taps, swipes, opens apps, or enters passcodes on its own, start with the low-risk checks: take it off the charger, dry and clean it, remove its case or screen protector, then restart the watch and its paired iPhone. If the behavior returns after an update and a clean re-pair, or the display is cracked, lifting, or damaged, arrange service; a reset cannot repair faulty display hardware.
“Ghost touch” is an informal description, not an official Apple diagnosis. Moisture, debris, accidental contact, a stuck control, a temporary software problem, or a damaged display can all look like phantom input. Work through the steps below in order so you can narrow down the cause without erasing the watch unnecessarily.
What Apple Watch ghost touch looks like
Unintended input may show up as apps opening without a tap, the watch face changing or entering customization, screens scrolling or swiping by themselves, or controls activating repeatedly. You may also find phantom passcode entries, or notice that the display is hard to control even though the Digital Crown or side button still works.

First, stop unintended input and check for damage
- Take the watch off your wrist and disconnect it from the charger.
- Move it away from water, steam, sweat, and damp or conductive surfaces.
- If it is rapidly entering a passcode, stop trying to unlock it until the display is under control. Repeated incorrect entries can cause a security lockout; if Erase Data is enabled, data may be erased after 10 failed passcode attempts. See Apple’s passcode guidance.
- Look for a cracked, flickering, discolored, or lifting screen, unusual heat, or a case that appears swollen or distorted.
If the screen is separating from the case or you suspect battery swelling, stop using and charging the watch. Do not press the screen back into place, heat it, puncture it, or try to open the watch. Arrange service.
1. Dry and clean the watch
Water-resistant does not mean guaranteed to work normally while wet. Water, sweat, sunscreen, soap, lotion, and debris can interfere with reliable touch input. Water resistance can also diminish over time or after damage, so do not deliberately submerge a watch to test it.
- Turn off the watch and remove it from the charger.
- Wipe the display and exterior with a clean, nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. If needed, lightly dampen the cloth with fresh water; never spray liquid into the watch.
- Dry the display thoroughly, then test it with clean, dry hands.
Apple advises against compressed air, external heat, abrasives, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, soap, and other cleaning products. Its cleaning guidance includes model-specific instructions. If the Digital Crown itself feels stuck or intermittent, Apple permits rinsing the crown under lightly running, warm, fresh water while turning and pressing it continuously. That is a specific crown-cleaning method for compatible watches—not a general recommendation to rinse every watch or a treatment for a defective touchscreen.

2. Remove cases and screen protectors
Take off the screen protector, case, bumper, full-cover shell, adhesive film, or other accessory, especially anything installed shortly before the problem began. A protector is not automatically faulty, but a lifted edge, trapped moisture or debris, or pressure from a case can complicate touch input. A tight band may also press against the case.
Test the bare watch with a dry finger in a well-lit setting. If the phantom input stops without an accessory, recheck its fit and condition before putting it back on. Apple’s Digital Crown troubleshooting likewise recommends checking for protective films, cases, and debris when controls do not work as expected.

3. Restart the Apple Watch and iPhone
If the watch still responds well enough, try a normal restart. The watch cannot be restarted while it is charging.
- Press and hold the Apple Watch side button until the sliders appear.
- Tap the power button, then drag the Power Off slider.
- After the watch turns off, press and hold the side button again until the Apple logo appears.
- Restart the paired iPhone too. This is a useful low-risk step before changing watch settings or updating software.
Wait until both devices have fully started, then test the watch. Apple’s restart instructions cover normal and forced restarts.

If the watch is unresponsive or a normal restart is not possible, hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds. Release them when the Apple logo appears and wait for the watch to boot fully.
Use a force restart as a recovery step, not a routine fix. Do not force-restart while a watchOS update is visibly in progress unless Apple Support directs you to do so. If a force restart clears the problem only temporarily and phantom input keeps returning, move on to diagnosis and service rather than repeating it indefinitely.
5. Update watchOS
An update may address a software-related responsiveness problem if Apple has corrected the underlying issue, but it is not a guaranteed ghost-touch fix. On the paired iPhone:

- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > General > Software Update.
- Install an available update, keeping the iPhone and watch near each other and the watch on its charger. Make sure the iPhone has Wi-Fi and sufficient battery.
Do not interrupt the installation once it begins. Apple’s update instructions provide additional requirements and troubleshooting.

6. Check for a trigger and repeat a simple test
After the watch is completely dry, unaccessorized, and restarted or updated, test it in a consistent way:
- Open several apps, swipe between screens, scroll a list, and tap one button or complication at a time.
- Leave the watch idle for a few minutes and see whether input continues without contact.
- Compare behavior on and off the charger, and note whether it returns after exercise or water exposure.
- If it is safe and practical, try a different outlet and power adapter, and an Apple charging cable or a charger compatible with your model. Clean and dry the watch and charger, and remove any case that changes how the watch sits on the charger.
- Note whether the problem is limited to one app or also affects the lock screen and other system screens.
A charging-only pattern is a clue to investigate, not proof that a third-party charger is at fault. Likewise, a problem in one app does not by itself establish a display defect. If the behavior is intermittent, record a short video to show a service technician.
7. Unpair and re-pair as a last software-level step
If ghost touch persists after cleaning, removing accessories, restarting, and updating, unpairing can test whether pairing data or settings are involved. It erases the watch, takes time to set up again, and will not fix a physically damaged touch layer. Confirm you have a suitable backup before proceeding, and have your Apple Account password available if requested.
- Keep the iPhone and Apple Watch close together.
- On the iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and tap My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the affected watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Follow the prompts. If asked about a cellular plan, keep it if you intend to pair this same watch again; remove it if you are giving the watch away or otherwise stopping service for it.
- Pair the watch again and choose to restore from its backup when offered.
Unpairing through the paired iPhone erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. Erasing directly on the watch is different: it can erase content and settings but may leave Activation Lock enabled. Apple documents the distinction in its unpairing and erasing instructions and user guide. Do not erase the watch directly as a substitute for unpairing if you need to remove Activation Lock.

When the watch needs service
Stop troubleshooting and arrange an inspection if the problem keeps returning after the steps above, occurs across the lock screen and multiple apps, or continues when the clean, dry watch is bare and off the charger. Service is especially appropriate if the issue began after a drop or liquid exposure, the screen is cracked, flickering, discolored, lifting, or showing lines, the watch gets unusually hot, controls are also intermittent, or the display prevents you from entering a passcode.
These signs make a hardware problem more plausible, but they are not a definitive diagnosis. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider must inspect the watch to determine whether the display, touch sensor, battery, enclosure, or another component needs service. Do not assume a particular watch generation or watchOS version is affected based on similar reports from other users.
Repair options, coverage, and cost
In the United States, Apple’s standard limited warranty generally covers manufacturing issues for one year from purchase, subject to exclusions and applicable law. Accidental damage is different from a manufacturing issue and may not be covered by the limited warranty. If you have AppleCare, check the terms and coverage for your particular watch and the cause of the damage; accidental-damage service fees may apply. Apple currently lists U.S. fees of $69 for Apple Watch and $79 for Apple Watch Ultra and Hermès models, but plan terms and eligibility matter. Do not buy a plan expecting it to automatically cover a fault that has already begun.
There is no universal out-of-warranty price for ghost touch. Apple says the final service option and amount depend on inspection; authorized providers may set their own out-of-warranty fees. Check Apple’s repair options and estimate flow and its U.S. warranty terms. Apple says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer.
An Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider is the clearest route for a newer watch, a covered device, suspected battery or water-resistance damage, or a user who wants official service. Independent repair may be worth comparing for an older watch outside coverage, but parts, repair guarantees, sealing, and expertise vary. Opening an Apple Watch can damage seals or other components and may reduce water resistance; unauthorized service may also affect coverage depending on the applicable plan terms. DIY screen replacement is generally not a beginner repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can water cause Apple Watch ghost touch?
Moisture or residue can interfere with reliable touch input, but it is only one possible cause. Dry and clean the watch before deciding whether the display needs service.
Will a force restart fix ghost touch permanently?
It may clear a temporary software or unresponsive state, but it does not prove the underlying issue is fixed. Repeated phantom input after a restart warrants further checks and possibly service.
Does a screen protector cause phantom taps?
It can contribute if it is lifting, trapping moisture or debris, or being pressed by an incompatible case. Remove it and test the clean, bare watch before drawing a conclusion.
