The “Sign In to Complete Purchase” message usually means your Apple Watch needs Apple Account authentication or payment verification before it can finish an App Store transaction. It does not necessarily mean the watch is completely signed out of iCloud. Start on the paired iPhone: open Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases, sign in with the account used for App Store purchases, and complete any password, two-factor authentication, billing, or terms-and-conditions prompts.
Then retry the download on the watch. If the message remains, check the payment method, account mismatch, connection, software, and pairing state in that order.
1. Sign in through Media & Purchases on your iPhone
Keep the iPhone and Apple Watch close together, then on the iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Media & Purchases.
- Choose View Account if prompted.
- Sign in with the Apple Account you use for App Store purchases.
- Complete any password, two-factor authentication, terms-and-conditions, or billing prompts.
Return to the App Store on the watch and try again. Menu labels can vary slightly by iOS version, country, and account status.

Apple treats Media & Purchases separately from some iCloud account functions, so signing in to iCloud does not always complete purchase authentication. Apple’s account documentation explains the role of Media & Purchases accounts (Apple Support).
2. Check the payment method—even for a free app
On the paired iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping. Authenticate if requested, then check whether your payment method is:
- Expired or marked for verification
- Declined by the bank
- Using an incorrect billing address
- Unsupported in your country or region
- Blocked by an unpaid previous Apple purchase
Update the existing method or add another accepted option, then retry the watch purchase. Available methods differ by country or region; Apple lists regional options in its payment-method guide.

3. Make sure the correct Apple Account is being used
Check the account shown under Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases. This should be the account associated with the app or purchase.
Apps and purchases generally remain tied to the Apple Account that acquired them. If an app was originally obtained through another account, signing in with a different account may make it appear unavailable or show its price again. Family Sharing can also affect which account’s payment method is used.
Do not sign out of iCloud casually just to solve this error. If necessary, sign out and back in under Media & Purchases only, after confirming that you know the correct account password. Apple supports purchase migration in some circumstances, but eligibility is limited by factors such as region, subscriptions, balances, and Family Sharing (Apple’s purchase-migration guidance).

- Press the Digital Crown.
- Open App Store.
- Find or search for the app.
- Tap Get or the app’s price.
- When prompted, double-click the watch’s side button.
The side-button double-click confirms the transaction; it is not necessarily the same as entering your Apple Account password. If the watch keeps requesting sign-in, complete the account flow on the iPhone first. Apple documents this App Store process and the association with your Apple Account payment method (Apple Watch User Guide).

5. Check the iPhone–Apple Watch connection
Before resetting anything:
- Keep both devices close together.
- Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on the iPhone.
- Turn off Airplane Mode on both devices.
- Check Control Center on the watch for connection warnings.
- If you see a red iPhone or red X icon, reconnect before retrying.
A cellular Apple Watch may have internet access but can still depend on the paired iPhone for account, pairing, or setup actions. Apple recommends checking proximity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, and restarting both devices when connection behavior is abnormal (Apple’s connection guide).
6. Restart both devices
Restart the watch after confirming the account and payment details:
- Press and hold the side button until the controls appear.
- Tap the power button and drag the Power Off slider.
- After it shuts down, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Restart the iPhone using its normal shutdown controls, then wait for the watch to reconnect and retry the App Store transaction.

7. Update iOS and watchOS
Install available updates on both devices:
- On the iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > General > Software Update.
- Install any available watchOS update.
- Also check Settings > General > Software Update for iOS.
Follow the requirements shown on the update screen, including charging, Wi-Fi, battery, storage, and passcode requirements. Labels and update behavior can change with newer iOS and watchOS releases.

If the error appears only on the watch, use the paired iPhone as a diagnostic and workaround:
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Scroll to Available Apps.
- Tap Install beside the compatible app.
You can also open the App Store on the iPhone and test whether the app downloads there. If it was purchased previously, use the App Store’s account and purchase-history area to redownload it rather than buying it again. Redownloading still requires the Apple Account that originally acquired the app.
If only one app fails while other apps install normally, check that app’s watchOS compatibility, region availability, developer requirements, and account history before treating the problem as a watch-wide fault.

10. Unpair only as a last resort
Unpairing erases the watch and restores it to factory settings, so it should not be the first response to a sign-in prompt. Before proceeding, make sure you know the Apple Account password and watch passcode, and understand how your cellular plan will be handled.
To unpair through the iPhone:
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the info button beside the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm the watch name.
- Choose whether to keep the cellular plan.
- Enter the Apple Account password to disable Activation Lock.
- Pair the watch again and restore from backup if offered.
Use the paired iPhone’s unpairing procedure rather than simply erasing the watch if you still have access to it. Apple explains that unpairing through the iPhone erases the watch and removes Activation Lock; erasing the watch directly can leave Activation Lock enabled (Apple’s unpairing instructions).
When to contact Apple or your bank
Contact Apple Support if the Apple Account is locked or disabled, the sign-in prompt loops after successful authentication, every purchase fails across Apple devices, or the watch will not reconnect or pair. Contact your financial institution if Apple reports a card decline or authorization failure, particularly when the card otherwise works normally.
Apple does not publish a dedicated article assigning one confirmed cause to this exact Apple Watch wording. The practical diagnosis is based on how Apple documents App Store authentication, Media & Purchases accounts, payment methods, connectivity, updates, and unpairing.
