If the Weather complication is blank, stuck on “Loading Weather,” showing dashes, or displaying stale information, first refresh Weather’s location permission on the paired iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Weather. Select Never, wait a few seconds, then restore the permission previously used—usually While Using the App or Widgets, or another option your iPhone offers. Open Weather on both devices and check the watch face.
If that fails, use Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Location & Privacy. This does not erase personal data, but it resets privacy approvals for every app, so you will need to grant permissions again.
Identify the failure first
“Weather not working” can describe several different problems:
- The complication is blank, shows two dashes, or stays on “Loading Weather.”
- The temperature or conditions are stale, even though the Weather app opens.
- The app works manually, but the complication does not update.
- Current Location fails while a fixed city works.
- Only one watch face or complication position is affected.
- Weather and other location-based complications, such as sunrise or sunset, also fail.
- The problem began after pairing, restoring an iPhone, or updating iOS or watchOS.
This distinction matters: the Weather app, its location permission, the watch-to-iPhone connection, and an individual face complication can fail independently.

1. Refresh Weather’s location permission
- On the paired iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security → Location Services.
- Tap Weather.
- Change Allow Location Access to Never.
- Wait several seconds, then restore the previous permission.
- Open Weather on the iPhone and Apple Watch, then return to the watch face.
The exact choices vary by iOS version and device. Do not select Always if your iPhone does not offer it. Apple documents that Weather relies on Location Services, and an Apple-documented workaround for an earlier watchOS 10 Weather-complication failure used this permission toggle before recommending a broader reset. That historical issue does not prove that every current failure has the same cause.

2. Reset Location & Privacy if the toggle fails
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset.
- Tap Reset Location & Privacy.
- Enter the passcode if requested.
- Reopen Weather and approve its location request.
- Check the Apple Watch complication again.
This is not a factory reset. It does not delete photos, apps, messages, or other personal content. It does, however, reset privacy approvals system-wide. You may need to reauthorize location, Bluetooth, microphone, camera, Photos, and other access for apps and services. Use this step when the Weather permission toggle did not restore the complication, not as an automatic first response.

3. Choose a default Weather location
The Weather complication uses the location configured as the Weather app’s default city. Browsing to another city inside Weather does not necessarily change the location shown on the watch face.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch → Weather → Default City.
- Select Current Location or a specific city.
As a diagnostic, choose a specific city. If that works but Current Location does not, the complication itself is probably functioning; location resolution, permissions, connectivity, or synchronization is more likely to be the problem. Leave the fixed city selected temporarily, confirm Location Services is enabled, open Weather on both devices, and retry Current Location later.
A fixed city is generally more predictable, but it will not follow you while traveling. Apple’s Apple Watch User Guide explains the default-location setting.
4. Refresh the face and verify its complication
Not every watch face position supports every Weather data type. Apple lists Weather complications such as Conditions, Temperature, Rain, Humidity, UV Index, Wind, and Air Quality.

- Touch and hold the current watch face.
- Tap Edit, then swipe to the complication positions.
- Tap the affected position and select a supported Weather complication, such as Temperature or Conditions.
- Save the face and test it.
If Weather loads when opened manually, return to the face. If necessary, edit the face again, temporarily choose another complication, save it, then replace that complication with Weather. This is a low-risk community workaround rather than a guaranteed Apple fix.
Test another watch face as well. If Weather works there, remove and re-add the complication on the affected face or recreate that face. Follow Apple’s complication instructions for the supported positions and types.
5. Check the connection and restart both devices
Weather may obtain data through the paired iPhone, Wi-Fi, cellular service, or the watch’s own network connection. Check that:
- Bluetooth is enabled on the iPhone.
- Wi-Fi or cellular data works on the iPhone.
- The Apple Watch is not in Airplane Mode.
- The watch shows a normal connection to the iPhone or a network.
- Weather loads when opened manually on the watch.
You can briefly toggle Wi-Fi or test another available network path. Some users report that this refreshes Weather, but it is a diagnostic—not a universal requirement to turn Wi-Fi off.

Then perform a normal restart:
- Turn off the Apple Watch.
- Restart or turn off the iPhone.
- Start the iPhone first, then the watch.
- Open Weather on both devices and check the face.
This order is a sensible troubleshooting sequence, not an Apple-required procedure. Use a force restart only if a device is frozen.
6. Install available iOS and watchOS updates
Update both the iPhone and Apple Watch if updates are available. Earlier watchOS 10 releases were associated with blank or non-loading Weather complications, and Apple issued updates during that period. That historical evidence should not be treated as confirmation that the same bug affects the current 2026 releases, or that a particular old version fixes every case.
Check Apple’s current update information and release notes before relying on a version-specific claim. If the problem started immediately after an update and affects more than one location-based feature, contact Apple Support rather than repeatedly resetting the watch.
Less common checks
- Automatic date and time: On iPhone, go to Settings → General → Date & Time and enable Set Automatically. This is a low-priority diagnostic based on user reports, not an official Weather fix.
- Other location complications: If sunrise, sunset, or other location-based complications also fail, investigate the iPhone’s broader Location Services state rather than only the face.
- iPhone Weather: If Weather cannot determine a location or load data on the iPhone either, the watch complication is probably not the only affected component.
- Permission changes: If the issue returns after changing Weather from one permission option to another, repeat the permission refresh and consider the full privacy reset.
Community reports also mention changing the clock format or toggling network settings, but neither is an official Apple-approved fix.

When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support if Weather will not load even when opened manually, multiple location-based apps fail, the watch cannot maintain its iPhone connection, permissions repeatedly revert, or the watch reports incorrect location data. Escalate when the issue persists after the permission refresh, restart, privacy reset, and available software updates—especially if it began after an update or the watch is covered by warranty or AppleCare.
Do not unpair and erase the watch as an early step. Unpairing and re-pairing is time-consuming and is better reserved for persistent pairing or synchronization problems after the simpler checks have failed. A third-party weather app can be a fallback, but it adds another app, permission set, update cycle, and possibly a subscription; it is not required for the built-in Weather complication to work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Weather complication blank when the Weather app works?
The app and complication can have separate refresh or synchronization states. Refresh Weather’s Location Services permission, open Weather on both devices, and remove and re-add the complication if the problem is limited to one face.
Should I set Weather’s location permission to Always?
No. Use the permission options your iPhone provides. The key troubleshooting step is switching Weather to Never and then restoring the previous available setting.
Will Reset Location & Privacy delete my iPhone data?
No. It does not erase personal content, but it resets privacy approvals across apps and services, so permissions must be granted again.
