Yes—but only as an unofficial community-ROM experiment. Samsung designed the Gear S3 for Tizen, not Wear OS. The community Wear OS 2 port was tested for the Bluetooth SM-R760 Gear S3 Frontier and SM-R770 Gear S3 Classic; LTE, Korean, carrier-specific, and other variants were not validated. Flashing can erase the watch, break pairing or security-sensitive services, and leave you dependent on a difficult recovery process.
This guide explains the preparation and NetOdin workflow without presenting the port as an official upgrade. The referenced packages date from 2022, so check their provenance and integrity before using them.
Before you begin: this is not a Samsung update
The Gear S3 is a Tizen smartwatch. Samsung’s compatibility documentation identifies the Gear S3 with the Tizen platform rather than Wear OS (Samsung developer documentation).

Wear OS 2 on the Gear S3 is an unofficial community port from an XDA development project (original XDA thread). NetOdin is the wireless flashing mechanism used to send a Samsung-compatible firmware package to the watch; it is not a general-purpose Android ROM installer.

Proceed only if you are comfortable losing data and potentially having to restore stock Tizen—or paying for professional hardware repair if the watch no longer enters a usable flashing mode.
Which Gear S3 models are eligible?

Find the model number on the watch under Settings → About watch or the equivalent device-information screen. Menu wording varies by Tizen version and region. You may also find it on the original box, rear labeling, or in the paired Samsung Gear/Galaxy Wearable application.
If the number is not exactly SM-R760 or SM-R770, stop rather than trying a similar-looking package. The community guide’s tested list is model-specific (guide and stated compatibility).

- Stock firmware: Samsung’s original Tizen operating system for the Gear S3.
- Wear OS 2 port: Unofficial community software adapted to Gear S3 hardware.
- NetOdin: A wireless flashing utility used with the watch’s AP or wireless-download mode.
A successful flash does not prove that every Wear OS service will work. Treat phone pairing, Google Play services, notifications, calls, GPS, the rotating bezel, buttons, vibration, microphone, speaker, NFC, heart-rate sensing, sleep tracking, fitness features, and battery reporting as build- and phone-dependent. Do not assume that Google Wallet will work: Google warns that modified, rooted, custom-ROM, untested, or bootloader-unlocked watches may fail its security checks (Google Wallet guidance).
Files and equipment
You will generally need:
- A Windows PC.
- The watch and its charger.
- A stable local Wi-Fi network shared by the watch and PC.
- NetOdin for Windows.
- A Wear OS 2 firmware archive and its extracted firmware
.tarfile. - A matching or known-good stock Tizen
.tarpackage for recovery. - The paired Samsung phone application, if required to disable Reactivation Lock.
The historical guide references archives named AP_GearS3WearOS2_150520221300_ExtractME.zip and AP_GearS3WearOS2_220620222258_ExtractME.zip. The June 22, 2022 package was described as the latest build in that guide—not as a current 2026 release.
A third-party archive lists the Wear OS packages, NetOdin, Tizen files, and a flashing guide (Android File Host archive). It is not an official Samsung distribution channel. Prefer a release source with clear provenance and published checksums. If no trustworthy hash is available, do not treat a mirror as safe merely because its filename looks correct. Never pay a questionable site for a firmware download.
Prepare the watch before flashing
- Record the model and original firmware. Write down SM-R760 or SM-R770, the software/build number, region or CSC information, and anything else shown on the About screen.
- Back up recoverable data. Assume the custom flash can wipe the watch and remove local settings, applications, watch faces, and activity data.
- Charge fully. Keep the watch on its charger where practical. Do not begin with a marginal battery.
- Disable Reactivation Lock. In the paired Samsung Gear/Galaxy Wearable application, the historical path is Settings → Find My Gear → Reactivation Lock → Off. Current app wording may differ. Confirm that the lock is actually disabled before disconnecting or resetting the watch.
- Prepare recovery first. Keep the correct Tizen package and its instructions available before touching the Wear OS package.
Prepare and verify the Wear OS package
- Download the selected archive only from a source whose provenance you can establish.
- Check the published checksum, if the project provides one.
- Extract the archive using a normal archive utility.
- Confirm that the extracted result is a firmware
.tarfile. - Do not rename, recompress, or alter the TAR unless the ROM’s own instructions explicitly require it.
Do not load a ZIP, IMG, random Android image, or package intended for another Gear S3 model. NetOdin expects a compatible Samsung-style firmware package.
Install NetOdin and configure the network
Install or extract NetOdin on the Windows PC according to the package’s instructions. Because downloadable NetOdin archives are commonly redistributed, inspect the source before running the executable and avoid unofficial driver bundles or modified tools.
Before connecting:
- Put the PC and watch on the same ordinary home Wi-Fi network.
- Disable VPNs temporarily.
- Avoid guest networks or access points that isolate wireless clients.
- Allow NetOdin through Windows Firewall when Windows prompts you.
- Keep the watch near the router or access point.
- Do not switch networks during the transfer.
- Close other Odin instances or Samsung utilities that could interfere with the connection.
Boot the Gear S3 into AP or wireless-download mode
NetOdin must communicate with the watch in its device-specific AP or wireless-download mode. This is different from a normal reboot and should not be confused with recovery mode.
The exact Gear S3 button sequence and menu labels must come from the original Gear S3 Wear OS instructions or a verified device-specific procedure. Do not substitute a generic Samsung-phone Odin sequence: Gear S3 controls and boot menus are different, and an incorrect sequence can leave you in the wrong mode.
Confirm visually that the watch is in the mode intended for wireless flashing before proceeding. If you cannot identify AP mode with confidence, stop and verify the original project instructions rather than guessing.

- Launch NetOdin on Windows, using the permissions required by the tool and your Windows installation.
- Confirm that NetOdin detects the watch in AP or wireless-download mode.
- Load only the extracted Wear OS firmware TAR into NetOdin’s AP field.
- Leave BL, CP, CSC, and PIT empty unless the specific ROM package explicitly supplies and requires those files.
- Recheck the model, file name, network connection, and Reactivation Lock status.
- Start the flash.
- Do not power off the watch, close NetOdin, change networks, press buttons repeatedly, or interrupt the transfer because the display appears inactive.
- Wait for NetOdin to report completion and for the watch to reboot.
The community procedure specifically describes extracting the Wear OS archive and placing the resulting TAR in the AP slot (procedure reference). Do not infer that every NetOdin option should be selected simply because it is visible.

After the first boot
Allow the first startup to finish without interrupting it. Once the watch reaches the ported system:
- Check whether the display, bezel, buttons, vibration, speaker, microphone, GPS, Bluetooth, and heart-rate sensor respond.
- Test pairing with the Android phone you actually intend to use.
- Check notifications, calls, Google Play services, and the Play Store separately.
- Test battery reporting and charging behavior.
- Do not rely on Wallet, contactless payments, health tracking, or sleep data until you have verified them on this exact build and phone combination.
- Look for an update mechanism, but assume there is no official OTA path unless the project explicitly documents one.
A port that boots is not necessarily a dependable daily-use watch. Compare battery life and essential functions with your original Tizen setup before deleting your recovery files.
Build-specific battery fix
The community guide references a separate battery-percentage-fix TAR. If the installed build has stuck or inaccurate battery reporting, use that workaround only if the project identifies it as compatible with your build. It is another NetOdin AP-slot operation, not a universal Gear S3 repair.
Do not flash a battery-fix package from an unrelated model or build. Preserve the original Wear OS package and stock Tizen package so you can recover if the workaround causes a new problem.
Troubleshooting
Reactivation Lock blocks the flash
Return to the paired Samsung application and disable Reactivation Lock using the available Find My Gear or security settings. Reboot the watch and retry only after confirming the setting is off. Do not repeatedly submit custom packages while the lock remains enabled.
NetOdin cannot find the watch
- Confirm that the watch is truly in AP or wireless-download mode.
- Put both devices on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network.
- Disable VPNs.
- Check Windows Firewall permissions.
- Move the watch closer to the access point.
- Close competing Odin or Samsung tools.
- Restart NetOdin and re-enter the correct watch mode rather than changing firmware files at random.
The flash fails partway through
Photograph or record the error. Note whether the watch still reaches AP or download mode. Preserve the model and original firmware details. Do not immediately try another file, mix packages from different regions, or flash a package for a different model.
If the watch remains in a recoverable flashing state, use the known-good stock Tizen package matching the exact model and appropriate firmware structure. A recovery TAR is not a guarantee that every failure can be repaired.

Try only the device-specific recovery or download procedure documented for the Gear S3 and the project. If wireless NetOdin cannot communicate with it, recovery may require a wired flashing method, specialized physical connections, or hardware access. Community reports show that some situations cannot be solved with a simple wireless retry (community discussion; recovery report).
How to return to stock Tizen
- Confirm that the watch is still able to enter the required AP or download mode.
- Use a stock Tizen TAR that matches the exact SM-R760 or SM-R770 model and appropriate regional firmware structure.
- Load only the fields specified by that Tizen package’s instructions; do not copy the Wear OS AP configuration blindly.
- Start the recovery flash only after checking the package, model, and Reactivation Lock state.
- Leave the watch and network undisturbed until the process completes.
The community guide describes a Tizen rollback path, but “return to Tizen” should be understood as a conditional recovery route, not a promise. If the watch cannot enter a usable flashing mode, wireless NetOdin may not be enough.
Should you install it in 2026?
Install it only if your goal is experimentation and you accept an unsupported, historically dated port. The referenced builds are from May and June 2022, and the old download links may have changed, disappeared, or been mirrored without trustworthy verification.
Keep the original Tizen firmware if you value predictable Gear S3 behavior. Tizen-focused alternatives, such as preserving or extracting existing watch faces and applications, may involve their own signing and authorization restrictions but avoid replacing the entire operating system (XDA discussion).
If you need current Google Play compatibility, dependable notifications, Wallet, ongoing security updates, or reliable phone pairing, a watch designed for Wear OS is the safer choice. The Gear S3 port is best viewed as a technical experiment—not a supported way to modernize the watch.
