If you want the watch face to run a few minutes fast, open Settings → Clock → +0 min on the Apple Watch and set a display offset. If the actual time, date, or time zone is wrong, change Date & Time on the paired iPhone instead. These controls do different things.
Choose the time setting you need
| Goal | Use this setting | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Make the watch face appear a few minutes ahead | Apple Watch: Settings → Clock → +0 min | Watch-face display only; system times remain unchanged. |
| Correct a wrong hour, date, or time zone | Paired iPhone: Settings → General → Date & Time | The actual system time and, when changed, time zone. |
| Switch between 12-hour and 24-hour presentation | iPhone: Apple Watch app → Clock → 24-Hour Time | Time format, not the underlying clock. |
Apple’s current instructions describe the watch setting as a minutes-ahead adjustment, not an independent manual setting for the watch’s underlying clock. Menu wording may vary with software version, language, or device restrictions.
Make the Apple Watch face appear ahead
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Clock.
- Tap +0 min.
- Turn the Digital Crown to choose how many minutes ahead the face should appear.
- Tap Done.
Apple documents this control as allowing an offset of up to 59 minutes ahead. It changes the time shown on the watch face only. Alarms, notifications, World Clock, and other system times continue to use the actual time. Apple’s instructions for Apple Watch time settings describe the offset and its limits.
To undo it, return to Settings → Clock → +0 min, set the offset to 0 minutes, and tap Done. If the face is five or ten minutes ahead but alarms and other time-based functions are correct, check this setting before changing the iPhone’s clock.

Correct the actual time or time zone
Use the paired iPhone’s Date & Time settings when the watch shows the wrong hour or date, or remains in the wrong time zone after travel. Apple Watch follows the iPhone’s time configuration rather than providing a conventional independent control for setting its underlying clock.
- On the iPhone, open Settings → General → Date & Time.
- For automatic time and time-zone handling, turn on Set Automatically.
- For a manual correction, turn off Set Automatically.
- Tap Time Zone and enter or select a city, or use the date and time controls to set them manually.
Apple’s guidance on changing the time or time zone explains these iPhone controls. Changing the iPhone’s actual clock just to make the watch face appear five minutes fast is not the right method: it changes system time rather than applying a visual offset.

Use 24-hour time
If by “adjust the time” you mean changing its format, open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, tap My Watch if needed, then tap Clock and turn on 24-Hour Time. This changes how the time is formatted; it does not change the time zone, actual time, or watch-face offset. Apple lists this path in its time-settings instructions.
Fix a watch showing the wrong time
Work through these checks in order, especially if the watch is an hour out or its alarms and other system functions are also wrong:

- Check the display offset. On the watch, open Settings → Clock → +0 min and confirm it is set to zero unless you intentionally want the face ahead.
- Check the iPhone’s time settings. Open Settings → General → Date & Time and confirm the time zone and date are appropriate. Turn on Set Automatically for automatic correction.
- Check connectivity and software. Keep the iPhone connected to the internet and install available iPhone and Apple Watch software updates.
- Refresh automatic settings. If automatic time-zone updating appears stuck, toggle Set Automatically off and back on.
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPhone and paired Apple Watch. If Apple displays a notice that updated time-zone information is available, restart both devices as Apple advises.
- Check for restrictions. If Set Automatically is dimmed or unavailable, check Screen Time restrictions and any corporate-management profile. Availability can also depend on carrier, country, or region.
Apple’s time and time-zone troubleshooting guidance covers connectivity, updates, restart steps, and restrictions. A one-hour discrepancy points to a time-zone or automatic-update issue to investigate, not to the minutes-ahead face setting.
What each setting changes
| Setting | Watch-face appearance | Alarms and notifications | Time zone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watch Clock → +0 min | Offsets the displayed face ahead | Unchanged; use actual time | Unchanged |
| iPhone Date & Time | Watch follows the corrected time configuration | Uses the actual configured time | Can be changed here |
| 24-Hour Time | Changes format only | No underlying time change | Unchanged |
Travel and displaying home time
For ordinary travel, leave automatic time and time-zone handling enabled. If the watch remains on the old zone, check the paired iPhone’s Date & Time settings, internet connection, updates, and restart state.

Do not compensate for a one-hour time-zone error with the watch-face offset: that changes only the face, leaving alarms and system events tied to the actual clock configuration. If you want to keep your home time visible while the system uses local time, consider a World Clock complication or another watch-face feature that displays another city. That is a display solution, not a time-zone lock; availability and behavior depend on the watch face and software.

Apple also cautions against manual time changes intended to alter app behavior, such as game timers. Use the system’s actual time settings for correcting the clock, and the face offset only for its intended visual purpose.
