Yes—an Apple Watch can cover GPS yardages, scorekeeping and, with the right app, shot tracking during a round. It does not become a golf watch through Apple’s Workout app alone. You need a third-party app such as 18Birdies, Golfshot or Arccos, plus a compatible iPhone/Watch setup and enough battery for the round.
For basic front/middle/back distances and a digital scorecard, start with 18Birdies’ free tier. Golfshot is the broader watch-first option, while Arccos is aimed at golfers willing to use a subscription and, potentially, sensors for deeper statistics. None guarantees a laser-like measurement to every flag, and GPS, course mapping, connectivity and battery settings all matter.
What your Apple Watch can do on the course
Depending on the app and membership, your watch can show:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Front, middle and back-of-green distances.
- Distances to hazards, carries, layups and mapped targets.
- A digital scorecard and hole-by-hole navigation.
- Manual shot and club logging.
- Automatic swing or shot detection, with editing after the hole.
- Club-distance recommendations, plays-like numbers and Strokes Gained analysis on supported paid plans.
- Course previews, green maps, heat maps, live scoring and group games where the app supports them.
- Post-round statistics and, in some services, handicap posting.
Golfshot lists GPS targets, automatic hole advancement, multiple scoring formats, automatic shot tracking and automatic putting on supported plans (App Store feature listing). 18Birdies offers free distances and scorekeeping, with premium plays-like distances, club recommendations, advanced GPS, heat maps and Strokes Gained (feature listing). Arccos can put rangefinder information and recommendations on the watch, but its full automatic-tracking experience may require sensors or a Link device.

Choose the right app
| Your priority | Best starting point | What you get | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free yardages and scoring | 18Birdies free | GPS distances, scorecard, basic stats and watch support; no payment is required to download it (free-tier explanation). | Advanced tools require Premium. |
| Most complete Apple Watch experience | Golfshot Pro | Detailed targets, scoring, automatic shot/putt tracking, club recommendations and Strokes Gained, depending on tier. | Subscription and potentially high GPS battery use. Golfshot’s product page currently lists Pro at $79.99/year and Champions at $99.99/year; App Store offers vary by region, billing period and legacy plan, so verify checkout. |
| Serious performance analytics | Arccos | Sensor-based tracking, club distances, Strokes Gained and caddie recommendations; see its Apple Watch rangefinder mode. | Recurring membership and possible sensor/Link hardware; more setup than a basic GPS app. |
| Exact visible-flag distance | Laser rangefinder | Direct measurement to a visible target without keeping GPS running. | No scorecard, maps or automatic statistics; requires line of sight and separate hardware. |
| Long battery and golf independence | Dedicated golf watch | Golf-specific screens and batteries designed for long rounds. | Another device and less integration with your iPhone. |
Check your watch model, watchOS version, iPhone requirement, offline-course support, shot-tracking tier and local course coverage before subscribing. Golfshot’s current App Store listing states iOS 15 or later and watchOS 8 or later; requirements can change.
Prepare before leaving home
- Update both devices. 18Birdies recommends current watch software for best compatibility.
- Install the iPhone app and its Watch companion. In the iPhone Watch app, confirm the golf app is installed and allowed to refresh.
- Grant location access on both devices. Without location permission, the app may not find or track the course.
- Charge to 100%. GPS, an always-on display, motion tracking and a separate Workout session can all increase drain. Golfshot specifically advises starting fully charged when using automatic putting or shot tracking.
- Find and cache the exact course. Confirm the correct course name, country, tee set and recent layout. New, renovated or private courses may be incomplete.
- Choose your GPS arrangement. Some apps use the watch’s GPS; others can let the iPhone do processing while the watch displays distances. Arccos documents phone-based tracking with watch rangefinder display.
- Pack a backup. Keep a paper scorecard, phone or charger available if the course is missing or the battery fades.
Start a round: app-specific steps
18Birdies
- Open 18Birdies on the iPhone or Watch and pair the watch if prompted.
- Tap Play, choose the course, tees and round settings, then start.
- Use the distance screen for targets and the scoring panel for the hole score.
- If Smart Tracking is enabled, confirm or edit detected shots during or after the hole.
18Birdies says a round can be started from either device when Smart Tracking is selected, and the watch gives haptic feedback when it detects a swing (start-round guide; Smart Tracking guide).
Golfshot
- Start Golfshot on the iPhone, select the course, tees and scoring format.
- Open Golfshot on the Watch and allow the round to synchronize.
- Use the watch for yardages, scoring and eligible tracking features.
- Let auto-advance move to the next hole if enabled, and correct tracked shots after the round.
Feature availability depends on your Golfshot membership and app version; consult the current product comparison.

- Start the round on the iPhone and choose the shot-detection method.
- Tap Start Round, then open Arccos on the Watch.
- Wait for synchronization and read the live front, middle and back distances.
Outside tournament mode, Arccos may also show plays-like distances and recommended clubs. Its membership and compatibility details are explained in its membership documentation.
Use yardages intelligently
- Front/middle/back are mapped reference points, not necessarily the flag.
- Hazard carry tells you the distance needed to clear; a layup number identifies a safer landing area.
- Pin distance is only as good as the marked pin position and course map.
- Plays-like numbers are estimates adjusted for factors such as elevation, wind, temperature or altitude. Arccos and 18Birdies describe these as app features, not measured certainty.
Compare the watch with the phone view if a number looks unusual. Confirm the hole and tee, and use a sprinkler or course marker when the decision is critical. A laser remains the better tool for a precise, visible flag distance.
Enter scores without slowing the round
- After holing out, open the scoring control.
- Enter total strokes.
- Add putts, fairway result, penalties or other statistics only if you can do so quickly.
- Confirm the hole and advance.
It is usually faster to record the essentials on the watch and expand details later on the phone.

Automatic shot tracking: useful, not infallible
A full swing may be detected, but practice swings, chips, putts or accidental movements can create duplicates. Missed shots, wrong clubs and incorrect locations still need manual correction. Review every hole before using the round to calculate club averages or Strokes Gained. Both 18Birdies’ Smart Tracking workflow and Golfshot’s tracking features provide post-round editing.

Save enough battery for 18 holes
- Start fully charged and check battery health if your watch is older.
- Turn off unnecessary notifications and avoid running another GPS-heavy workout simultaneously.
- Use low-power settings where the app and watch support them.
- Disable automatic shot or putt tracking if you only need yardages.
- Let the iPhone handle processing when the app permits it; keep Bluetooth enabled.
- Reduce always-on display use or brightness if that is acceptable.
- Carry a compact charger or battery pack. Cellular does not guarantee better battery life and can increase radio consumption.
Golfshot warns that continuous background GPS can dramatically reduce battery life and documents configurations that turn off watch GPS in some phone-assisted setups (guide). No app can promise a full round on every model, temperature or battery condition.
Troubleshooting
The course is missing
Search by city and country, check the tee selection and verify location permission. A renamed, newly built or renovated course may need a vendor map update. Download or select it before tee time and keep a paper backup. Golfshot provides a course-update request route, but timing is not guaranteed.
The watch and phone do not sync
Keep Bluetooth and location enabled, open both apps, and avoid force-quitting them during play. If the connection returns, 18Birdies says scores can synchronize afterward. Restart the round only when the current one cannot be recovered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGPS looks wrong
Check that you are on the right hole, that the GPS lock is established and that the app is not showing a stale phone position. Map errors, tree cover, a front or back pin and plays-like adjustments can all explain a mismatch. Use a course marker or laser for confirmation.

A shot was missed or duplicated
Open the hole’s shot list, delete practice swings or duplicates, add missed shots manually and correct the club before saving. Do not rely on unreviewed automatic data.
The round was not saved
Keep the app open long enough to finish synchronization, restore the phone/watch connection and check the round history. If the app cannot recover it, reconstruct scores from your backup card.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Competition and handicap considerations
Personal scorekeeping is not the same as tournament compliance. Plays-like distances, wind and elevation adjustments, club recommendations and electronic-caddie functions may be restricted by the applicable Rules of Golf or a competition’s local conditions. Check with the event before play. Handicap posting also depends on the app’s integration, account and jurisdiction; Golfshot advertises USGA Handicap Index linking and score posting, but availability should be confirmed in your account.
Is an Apple Watch good enough for golf?
For most recreational golfers, yes: it can keep the phone in the bag while providing convenient GPS targets and scoring. Choose 18Birdies free for a low-friction start, Golfshot Pro for the broadest Apple Watch feature set, or Arccos when automatic tracking and performance analytics justify recurring cost and additional hardware. Choose a laser when exact flag distance matters most, or a dedicated golf watch when long battery life and phone independence outrank general smartwatch integration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play golf with an Apple Watch without an iPhone nearby?
Not universally. It depends on the app, watch GPS capability, cached course data and whether shot tracking is phone-based. Check the app’s offline and connectivity documentation before leaving the phone behind.
Will Apple Watch GPS give the exact distance to the pin?
Usually it shows mapped front, middle and back points or an app-marked pin. That is different from a laser measurement to a visible flag, and map or pin-position errors can affect the number.
Do I need to pay for an Apple Watch golf app?
No for basic use: 18Birdies offers a free tier, and some Golfshot functions are free. Advanced tracking, plays-like numbers and analytics commonly require Premium, Pro or an Arccos membership.
Can automatic shot tracking be trusted without checking it?
No. Practice swings can be recorded, and real shots can be missed. Review and edit the shot list before using the data for club averages or Strokes Gained.
