The most precise way to find your own AirTag is Find My > Items > select the item > Find Nearby—or Find on some iPhones and iOS versions. Follow the on-screen direction and approximate-distance indicators, then use Play Sound when you are close enough to search the final hiding place.
What “precisely find” means
Find My uses several different methods, and they are not equally precise:
- Map location: Shows the AirTag’s current or last known location based on a recent connection to the Find My network. It is not a guaranteed live, indoor position.
- Directions: Opens Maps so you can travel to the reported location.
- Play Sound: Makes a reachable AirTag emit chimes, helping you identify it inside a bag, drawer, vehicle, or under furniture.
- Precision Finding: Uses Ultra Wideband on supported iPhones to provide short-range directional and approximate-distance guidance.
In practice, use the map to reach the general area, Precision Finding to narrow the search, and sound to locate the physical tag.

Precision Finding depends on both the AirTag and the iPhone. Check the following:

- The AirTag is paired with your Apple Account and appears in Find My > Items.
- Your iPhone supports Ultra Wideband. Apple’s current support article says Find Nearby works on iPhone 15 and later; compatibility can vary by model, AirTag generation, iOS version, and region.
- Your iPhone is updated to a compatible iOS release.
- Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services is turned on.
- Find My has permission to use your location, with Precise Location enabled at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Find My.
- The AirTag is close enough for the iPhone to establish a short-range connection.
- The AirTag battery still has power.

Step-by-step: precisely find your AirTag

Open the Find My app.

Tap Items at the bottom of the screen.

Select the item attached to the AirTag—for example, your keys, luggage, wallet, or backpack.

Check the map and its timestamp. If the AirTag is not nearby, the displayed position may be its last known location rather than its current position.

When you are close enough, tap Find Nearby. Depending on your iPhone, AirTag generation, and iOS interface, the control may instead be labeled Find.

Move slowly while following the arrow, distance estimate, vibration feedback, and any floor or location guidance shown on screen.

As the indicated distance decreases, search likely hiding places. Check above and below eye level, not just the open floor area.

Tap Play Sound when the AirTag is reachable. Repeat the chime if the surroundings are noisy.

When you recover the item, use the close or done control to exit Precision Finding.
Apple describes the Precision Finding display as potentially showing an arrow, approximate distance, and an indication that the AirTag is on another floor. The feature is guidance—not a guaranteed straight line through walls or objects.
How to read Precision Finding indoors
The arrow indicates the direction in which the iPhone believes the AirTag is located. The distance is approximate and may change abruptly as you move around walls, furniture, metal objects, luggage, vehicles, or other obstructions. Apple confirms that intervening walls and objects can affect performance, but does not provide one universal accuracy or range figure for every environment.

For the best result:
- Hold the iPhone normally and keep the camera and sensors uncovered.
- Walk slowly instead of rushing through the area.
- Pause when the direction indicator changes, then take a few steps in the new direction.
- Use a systematic sweep of the room, vehicle, or storage area.
- Check shelves, drawers, coat pockets, luggage compartments, bags, under cushions, behind furniture, and adjacent rooms.
- If the display indicates another floor, search vertically rather than continuing to scan the same room.
When you are close, the AirTag may vibrate the iPhone as you approach. Switch to Play Sound for the final search, especially if the tag is hidden inside an enclosed item.

If your iPhone says more light is required
The finding experience may need the camera to see more clearly. Uncover the camera area and, if prompted, tap the flashlight or torch control. Then continue following the distance and direction display. A case, hand, pocket, or dark environment can interfere with this part of the experience.
If Find Nearby or Find is missing
A missing button does not necessarily mean the AirTag is defective. Work through this order:
- Confirm that you selected the correct item in Find My > Items.
- Move toward the location shown on the map. Precision Finding is a proximity feature and may not appear while the AirTag is too far away.
- Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on.
- Open Find My in the Location Services list and enable location access.
- Enable Precise Location for Find My.
- Update iOS if an update is available.
- Try Play Sound. It may appear once the AirTag becomes reachable.
- Tap Directions to travel to the current or last known location.
- Turn on Notify When Found if the AirTag cannot currently be located.
- Check for a low-battery warning, particularly if the AirTag has not connected recently.
Apple’s instructions recommend using the map, directions, or speaker when Find Nearby is unavailable: Apple Support.
If the AirTag is not currently reachable
Find My can display a useful location even when your iPhone cannot communicate with the AirTag directly. The Find My network updates the item’s location when the AirTag connects to nearby Apple devices.

- Current or recent location: Find My has received a comparatively recent network report. Check the time shown before treating it as live.
- Last known location: The AirTag is not currently reporting, so Find My shows where and when it was last detected.
- Notify When Found: Find My alerts you if the AirTag connects to the network again.
Tap Directions to reach the reported area, then try Find Nearby again. If the object is moving—for example, luggage in transit—the map may describe an earlier network report rather than its exact present position.
Play Sound versus Precision Finding

The most effective combination is Precision Finding first and Play Sound second. Silence does not prove the AirTag is absent: it may be out of range, enclosed, too quiet for the environment, low on battery, or temporarily unavailable.

This is a different situation from finding your own misplaced AirTag. If your iPhone warns that an unknown AirTag is moving with you:
- Tap the tracking alert.
- Tap Continue.
- Tap Play Sound.
- If available, tap Find Nearby and follow the direction and distance display.
- Search your clothing, bags, luggage, personal belongings, and vehicle.
Do not assume that an alert proves a person’s intent. An AirTag may belong to someone who lent you an item, for example. If you find it, use the information offered by Find My or tap the AirTag with an NFC-capable phone to view available identification information. If you suspect stalking, harassment, or another safety risk, go to a safe public place and contact law enforcement. Preserve the tag and relevant alert information if doing so is safe.

If someone else is carrying the item
If you have lent the AirTag-equipped item to another person, share the AirTag through Find My rather than treating the borrower as an unknown tracker. Apple says a person you share it with can use Find My and Precision Finding, and will not receive tracking notifications for that shared AirTag. See Apple’s AirTag sharing instructions.
Original AirTag versus AirTag (2nd generation)
Many owners still have the original AirTag, introduced in 2021. Apple lists iOS 14.5 or later and the U1 chip for Ultra Wideband-based Precision Finding for that model; the practical requirement remains a supported iPhone.
Apple’s 2026 documentation introduces AirTag (2nd generation), which requires iOS 26 or later. Apple says its expanded Precision Finding works with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 and later, excluding iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e; availability varies by region. Do not assume that every iPhone running a compatible iOS version supports every Precision Finding capability.

What you need for the most precise search
- An AirTag paired with your Apple Account.
- A suitable holder or attachment for keys, luggage, a wallet, or another item.
- An iPhone that supports the relevant Ultra Wideband and Precision Finding features.
- Location Services, Find My access, and Precise Location enabled.
You do not necessarily need the newest iPhone to locate an AirTag. Older or incompatible iPhones may still provide Find My’s map, network location, directions, and other available controls; the limitation is the short-range Precision Finding feature.
