Yes—you can use an animated GIF on a Samsung Galaxy Watch4 or Watch4 Classic, but it works as the background for Samsung’s My Photo+ watch face, not as a separate, always-running wallpaper. The animation is visible while the watch display is awake; it does not keep playing on a dark screen. Here’s how to set it up, what to expect, and what to try if the GIF shows up as a still image.
What a GIF does on the Watch4
Samsung added GIF support to the My Photo+ face in a Watch4 software update announced on October 20, 2021. Samsung’s update records for specific Watch4 models also list GIF support, though rollout timing and availability can vary by model, region, and software. (Samsung’s announcement; update record for SM-R885F; update record for SM-R875F.)
My Photo+ puts the selected image or GIF behind the time and any watch-face elements that the current version allows you to customize. It doesn’t replace the watch interface or turn the display into a continuously animated screen. The full effect is a wake-screen customization: the display needs to be active for motion to be visible. Raise wrist to wake can make the animation feel more immediate, but it does not keep the GIF running while the screen is off.

This is different from choosing several still photos, which may cycle when the watch wakes or when you tap the display on some software versions. A GIF contains its own animation. How it plays can depend on the file and software, so don’t assume every GIF or wake gesture will behave identically.

What you need
- A Galaxy Watch4 or Watch4 Classic with software that supports GIFs in My Photo+.
- A compatible Android phone paired with the watch.
- Galaxy Wearable and the watch plug-in installed and up to date.
- A GIF saved locally somewhere the phone’s media picker can access, such as Gallery.
- Bluetooth enabled, with the phone and watch nearby while the face syncs.

Set up a GIF through Galaxy Wearable
- Connect the watch. Wake the Watch4 and check that Galaxy Wearable shows it as connected. Keep Bluetooth on and the phone close by.
- Open Galaxy Wearable on your phone and tap Watch faces.
- Choose My Photo+. Depending on your software, it may be listed among Samsung’s built-in faces or under a photo/customization category.
- Tap Customize, then open the background or photo selector.
- Select your GIF in the phone’s media picker. If it is missing, save a local copy to Gallery or Files first; a file visible only in a cloud service may not appear in this picker.
- Confirm with Save or Apply. Wait for the face and image to sync to the watch before judging the result.
- Adjust the face elements if offered. Clock style, color, and complications vary by face and software. Check that the time remains easy to read and that useful information is not hidden.
- Wake the watch and check playback. Tap the display or raise your wrist if Raise wrist to wake is enabled. Some versions may respond differently to taps or wake events.
If My Photo+ is not in the list, update Galaxy Wearable, its watch plug-in, and the watch software, then check the face list again. The feature was introduced in a 2021 update, but Samsung’s records describe particular model variants rather than guaranteeing identical availability on every regional configuration.
Pick a GIF that works on a round screen
A phone wallpaper can look awkward when cropped to a circular watch display. A square or nearly square GIF gives you more room to compose the image, but the round screen still trims its corners. Keep faces, logos, and other important details near the center, and preview the crop before applying it.

- Keep the loop short and simple. A brief, clean loop is less visually distracting than a long clip converted wholesale.
- Leave space for the clock. An uncluttered or darker area behind the time usually improves readability.
- Favor clear shapes and contrast. Fine detail, tiny lettering, and bright, busy motion can be hard to see at watch size.
- Consider the face’s data. Complications can cover the image, and the image can compete with the time or health information.
There is no universal file-size, resolution, or frame-count limit established by the cited Samsung documentation. If playback is slow or choppy, try a shorter GIF with fewer frames or a smaller, simpler version; optimization may help, but it cannot guarantee smooth playback on every build.
Battery life and always-on display
There isn’t a reliable universal percentage for how much battery a GIF background uses. The effect depends on how often the screen wakes, how long it stays active, brightness, always-on display settings, and other watch activity such as LTE, GPS, notifications, and health tracking. Battery health and watch size matter too.
The GIF’s motion is not a promise of continuous animation in the always-on or inactive display state. Samsung’s low-power display behavior is separate from the active face, and the animated sequence should not be expected to play while the screen is off. If endurance matters more than motion, try a static background, lower brightness, turn off always-on display, or reduce Raise wrist to wake sensitivity if it causes frequent accidental wakes. Compare battery use across similar days and settings rather than relying on one charge cycle.

If the GIF appears as a still image
- Check the source file. Open it on your phone and make sure it actually animates; some downloads or conversions are just one extracted frame.
- Save a fresh local copy. Put the GIF in Gallery or another location the phone’s picker can access.
- Re-select it in My Photo+. Open Galaxy Wearable, go through Customize, and choose the GIF again rather than assuming a still-photo selection will animate.
- Wait for the transfer. Apply the face and give the watch time to sync before testing it on the wrist.
- Try a short, simple GIF. This helps rule out a file-specific compatibility or playback problem.
- Restart Galaxy Wearable and the watch if it still fails, then repeat the selection process.
Some owners have reported that a GIF appeared static or became selectable only after moving it to watch storage. Those are community reports, not official Samsung instructions; if your phone picker continues to fail, use a supported Gallery or file-transfer route to put the image on the watch and try selecting it there. Other common problems
- My Photo+ is missing
- Confirm the watch is paired, check for Galaxy Wearable, plug-in, and watch updates, and look through the built-in face categories. Samsung cautions that available screens and settings can vary by software, phone, provider, and watch.
- The image is cropped badly
- Use a more square source, move the subject toward the center, or create a version with more empty space around the edges. Circular screens naturally lose the corners.
- The animation looks jerky
- Try fewer frames, a shorter loop, or a less complex, lower-resolution copy. Firmware and file handling can still affect playback.
- The face seems to use too much battery
- Compare it with a static My Photo+ image under similar settings, then reduce screen wakes, brightness, or always-on use. If drain remains high, LTE, GPS, health sensors, notifications, or battery age may be bigger factors than the GIF.
My Photo+ or a third-party animated face?
Start with My Photo+ if you want a personal animated background without adding another watch-face app. It is the simpler route, but it may not provide the dense data layouts, animation timing, or other design controls you want. If health metrics and readability matter most, choose a data-oriented face or use a static photo instead.
Third-party face apps may offer different layouts or animation features, but they bring their own compatibility, permissions, maintenance, possible costs, and battery trade-offs. They are alternatives, not a requirement for putting a GIF on a Watch4. Use GIFs you have the right to use
Choose a GIF you created, own, or have permission to use. Finding a clip on a social platform does not automatically grant rights to reuse or redistribute it. Be especially careful with footage and characters from television, films, and sports, particularly if you plan to share or publish the image.
