Open Health → Search → Sleep on your iPhone, then tap the Sleep chart or a night to see its details. Your Apple Watch must have Sleep Tracking enabled and be worn while you sleep; Apple says it needs at least one hour of wear in a night to record sleep data. The Watch app is where you configure tracking; Health is where you read the history.
Where to find Apple Watch sleep data on iPhone
- Open the Health app.
- Tap Search at the bottom right.
- Tap Sleep.
- Tap the Sleep chart or a sleep category to open its details. Choose a time range at the top, or tap Show More Sleep Data for additional categories and comparisons.
If Sleep is in your Health app Favorites, you may also be able to open it from Summary. Sleep history is viewed in Health, not normally in the Apple Watch app; use the Watch app to adjust tracking settings. Apple’s instructions: Track your sleep on Apple Watch and use Sleep on iPhone.
How to read one night’s sleep
In Health → Search → Sleep, select the day view and tap the night or its graph column. Move across the graph or choose another date to inspect a different night. Depending on the data available, the detail view can show total sleep duration, time awake, REM, Core and Deep stages, and bedtime or wake-time information. Apple’s iPhone guide also explains how to tap a day and inspect accumulated sleep details: View sleep history in Health on iPhone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTime in bed is not necessarily time asleep
A sleep schedule marks the bedtime and wake time you intend to follow. Time in bed or a scheduled interval is not the same as the watch’s estimate of time asleep. If your schedule spans eight hours but you were awake for part of it, the recorded sleep duration can be shorter; awake periods and stage estimates account for some of the difference.

How to switch between time ranges
The Sleep section provides day, week, month and six-month views. Use the scale that matches the question you are asking:
| View | Useful for |
|---|---|
| Day | Inspecting one night’s timeline and stage estimates. |
| Week | Comparing nights across a week, including weekday and weekend patterns. |
| Month | Checking whether shorter nights or an irregular schedule recur. |
| Six months | Reviewing broad changes rather than drawing conclusions from one night. |
For Apple’s instructions on the available history views, see Apple Support’s sleep-tracking guide.
What Awake, REM, Core and Deep mean
- Awake: Periods the watch estimates you were awake.
- REM: Estimated rapid-eye-movement sleep.
- Core: Apple’s label for lighter or intermediate sleep.
- Deep: Estimated deeper sleep.
These are estimates based on watch sensor data, not direct brain-wave measurements or the equivalent of a clinical sleep study. A stage label does not by itself establish that your sleep was healthy or that you have a disorder. Treat a single night’s stage totals as an estimate, and look for repeated patterns over time instead of trying to optimize around one REM or Deep number.

How to read Sleep Score
If Sleep Score is available on your setup, look for it in the Sleep section of Health. Apple describes a score from 0 to 100 based on the previous night, with these stated components:
| Component | Weight in Apple’s score |
|---|---|
| Sleep duration | 50 points |
| Bedtime consistency | 30 points |
| Sleep interruptions | 20 points |
Because duration is only one component, a long night can still receive a lower score if bedtime consistency or interruptions affect the result. Apple says the score typically appears after sleep analysis is complete, around 15 minutes after waking. Availability and presentation can vary with device, software release, language and region, so not every installation will show it in exactly the same way. It is Apple’s summary of these measurements, not a universal clinical measure of sleep quality. Details are in Apple’s sleep guide and its Sleep Score explanation.
How to view overnight metrics and Vitals
Sleep details can include comparisons involving sleep time and heart rate, respiratory rate and, on compatible watches, nightly wrist-temperature changes. These are related measurements, not additional sleep stages.

Respiratory rate
To open the separate respiratory-rate history, go to Health → Search → Respiratory → Respiratory Rate → Show More Respiratory Rate Data. The Sleep entry can show the range measured while asleep. Apple says respiratory-rate measurements are not intended for medical use. Availability can depend on tracking, age, device and software; Apple says Respiratory Rate is unavailable to users under 13. See Apple’s Apple Watch guide.

Wrist temperature and Blood Oxygen
Apple identifies Apple Watch Series 8 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models as compatible with nightly wrist-temperature comparisons in its cited sleep guidance; do not expect that comparison on every watch. Blood Oxygen availability also varies by model and market. Apple notes that some Apple Watch models sold in the United States do not have Blood Oxygen available in the Vitals app. See Apple’s Vitals and Blood Oxygen guidance.
Vitals
Vitals is a separate, trend-oriented Health view that can include overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, Blood Oxygen and sleep duration. After multiple nights, it can establish a typical range and may flag multiple metrics outside that range, sometimes with contextual factors such as illness or medication. It provides trend information, not a diagnosis. Apple describes Vitals in its iPhone Health guide.

Turn on sleep tracking and review your schedule
Enable Apple Watch tracking
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch → Sleep.
- Turn on Sleep Tracking. You can also enable Charging Reminders.
You can change Sleep Tracking on the watch at Settings → Sleep. Apple’s watch guide says Sleep Tracking is available from watchOS 8 or later, but individual metrics and features have their own device and software requirements.
Check the sleep schedule separately
On iPhone, open Health → Search → Sleep → Full Schedule & Options to review or edit schedules, alarms and related options. A schedule expresses your intended bedtime and wake time; it is not what creates the watch’s stage estimates. Apple documents schedule and alarm controls at Turn off alarms and delete sleep schedules on iPhone.
An iPhone can estimate time spent in bed when a sleep schedule is set up, but that is different from Apple Watch sleep-stage tracking. Apple explains this distinction in its Health guide for iPhone.

Why sleep data may be missing or incomplete
If a night does not appear, check the basic recording requirements first. Apple says sleep tracking is unavailable on watches configured through Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup).
- Confirm you wore the paired watch while sleeping and that Sleep Tracking is on in the Watch app.
- Check that the watch had enough battery to remain active overnight; Charging Reminders can help you plan charging.
- Apple requires at least one hour of wear in a night to receive sleep data. That threshold does not guarantee a complete or representative night.
- Wear the watch comfortably and securely. Apple warns that a watch that is too loose can register excess movement.
- After waking, allow time for analysis and synchronization with the iPhone, then check Health’s Sleep section and the relevant metric category.
- If data remains absent, check that the iPhone and watch software are current and compatible with the feature you expect.
If only a particular metric is missing, its availability may differ from the basic sleep graph. Respiratory Rate, wrist temperature and Blood Oxygen each have separate requirements or market limits; their absence does not necessarily mean sleep tracking itself failed.
If a number looks unexpected
Health can combine information from iPhone, Apple Watch and compatible third-party apps or devices. If a value seems surprising, open its detail view and inspect the data source before assuming it came from your Apple Watch. Apple explains Health data sources in its iPhone Health guide.
How much should you trust the numbers?
Use Apple Watch sleep data as a record of estimated timing and trends, not as a diagnostic test. Sensor readings and stage estimates can be affected by fit, movement, battery or an interrupted recording. Repeated patterns across weeks can be more informative than one night’s stage breakdown or score, but the app does not determine the cause of a pattern. Respiratory-rate measurements in particular are explicitly not intended for medical use. If sleep problems or symptoms persist, discuss them with a healthcare professional rather than self-diagnosing from a watch metric.
