To remove Activation Lock, unpair the Apple Watch from its paired iPhone and enter the Apple Account password, or use Find My on iCloud.com to erase the watch and then remove it from the account. Erasing the watch directly only wipes its contents; it does not remove the lock. If you bought the watch used, the previous owner normally must remove it.
What Activation Lock is—and what it is not
Activation Lock is a Find My security feature. When Find My is enabled on the iPhone paired with an Apple Watch, the watch is linked to the Apple Account used with that setup. The linked account’s credentials are required to unpair the watch, pair it with a new iPhone, or turn off Find My. Apple calls this account an “Apple Account”; it was previously called an Apple ID. Apple explains how Activation Lock works.
Activation Lock is different from the watch passcode. The passcode protects access to the watch itself; the Apple Account password authorizes changes to the account link. Resetting a forgotten passcode erases the watch but does not, by itself, remove Activation Lock.

To check whether Activation Lock is on using the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch > All Watches, then tap the information button beside the watch. If Find My Apple Watch appears, Activation Lock is enabled. Labels and layout can vary slightly with software versions.

Remove Activation Lock with the paired iPhone
If you own the watch and have its paired iPhone and the linked Apple Account password, unpairing through the Apple Watch app is the standard route. Keep the watch and iPhone close together while you do this.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch, then confirm the unpairing.
- For a GPS + Cellular watch, choose whether to keep or remove its cellular plan.
- Enter the linked Apple Account password when prompted, then confirm.
Unpairing erases the watch, restores factory settings, removes it from the account, and disables Activation Lock. The iPhone may create a watch backup during the process. Erasing the watch does not delete the owner’s iCloud data. See Apple’s unpairing and erasing instructions and its guidance on preparing a watch for transfer.
Choose what to do with the cellular plan
- Keeping and pairing the watch again: Keep the plan if you intend to continue using it.
- Selling or giving away the watch: Remove the plan from the watch.
- Ending cellular service: Check with the carrier. Removing a plan from the watch does not necessarily cancel the carrier subscription; fees or cancellation requirements may apply.
Remove it without the paired iPhone
If the paired iPhone is unavailable but you control the Apple Account linked to the watch, use Find My on iCloud.com. The necessary sequence is to erase the watch and then remove it from the account; remote erasure alone is not enough.

- Go to iCloud.com and sign in with the Apple Account linked to the watch.
- Open Find My from the Quick Access Menu. Sign in again if asked.
- Choose the Apple Watch under All Devices, then select Erase.
- Select Next and follow the prompts. Enter the Apple Account password if requested; add a phone number if desired, then select Erase.
- After the erase has completed, select Remove beneath the watch and then Continue.
- If a prompt relates to AppleCare+ Theft and Loss coverage, follow the applicable Deactivate & Remove option.
A remote erase may remain pending until the watch connects to the internet. Check Find My again rather than assuming the command completed immediately. Apple’s Activation Lock instructions describe the Find My removal route.
What a direct reset on the watch does
If you have the watch but not its paired iPhone, you can erase its contents from the watch: open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, enter the passcode if requested, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan, and confirm with Erase All.
This returns the watch to factory settings but leaves it linked to the Apple Account that activated it. The linked account credentials are still needed during setup. A factory reset is not an Activation Lock removal method. Apple distinguishes direct erasure from unpairing in its Apple Watch erase instructions.

If you forgot the Apple Watch passcode
You can erase the watch without entering its forgotten passcode, but Activation Lock remains unless you also remove the watch through the account-owner procedure above. Put the watch on its charger, then follow Apple’s reset process:
- Hold the side button until the power button appears.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until Erase all content and settings appears.
- Tap Reset, then tap Reset again to confirm.
- Wait for the erase to finish, then set up the watch or restore from a backup.
If you still have the paired iPhone, unpairing from the Apple Watch app is preferable because it erases the watch and removes Activation Lock in the same process. See Apple’s instructions for a forgotten Apple Watch passcode.
If you forgot the Apple Account password
Recover or reset the linked account password before trying to unpair the watch or remove it through Find My. Start at Apple’s account recovery page. Recovery may require identity verification and can take time depending on the account’s security settings.

- Recover access to the Apple Account first.
- Once you can sign in, unpair through the paired iPhone or erase and remove the watch through Find My.
- If you have forgotten both the watch passcode and account password, recover the account before erasing or setting up the watch again.
If you bought the Apple Watch used
A buyer cannot normally remove another person’s Activation Lock. The previous owner needs to unpair the watch and enter the Apple Account password, or erase and remove it from Find My. A request for the previous owner’s Apple Account password during setup means the lock is still active. Apple’s used-device guidance says to have the previous owner remove the watch from their account.
Check before completing the purchase
- Ask the seller to unpair the watch in front of you and enter their Apple Account password.
- Confirm that the watch is erased, then start pairing it with your iPhone.
- Do not complete the transaction if setup requests the previous owner’s account credentials.
If the watch shows the previous owner’s passcode screen or Home screen, it has not been properly erased. If you already bought it and the seller is unavailable, contact the seller and request removal; if they cannot or will not do it, use the marketplace’s refund or buyer-protection process. Keep the listing, messages, payment records, and serial-number information. A locked watch is a warning sign, but it does not by itself prove the seller stole it.

Do not pay a third-party “Activation Lock bypass” or “iCloud unlock” service. Such services are not part of Apple’s supported removal process and may expose you to fraud, malware, or a device that remains unusable.

If the watch was lost or stolen
Do not remove a missing watch from your Apple Account just to erase it. Keep Activation Lock enabled and use Find My to locate it, play a sound, turn on Lost Mode, or remotely erase personal information. Remote erasure does not necessarily remove Activation Lock, which helps prevent someone else from reactivating the watch. See Apple’s Find My and Activation Lock guidance.
- Lost watch: Keep it in Find My and use Lost Mode or remote erase.
- Sold, given away, or sent for service: Erase it and remove it from the account using the applicable owner procedure.
- Recovered watch: Follow the appropriate recovery or reactivation steps; remove it from the account only when transferring ownership.
Troubleshooting common problems
The watch does not appear in the Apple Watch app
It may not be paired with that iPhone, the iPhone may be signed in to a different Apple Account, the watch may already have been erased or removed, or the pairing relationship may be incomplete. A missing listing alone does not identify which explanation applies. Check the account and pairing status, or try the Find My route if you control the linked account.
Remote erase is pending
The command may not finish until the watch connects to a network. Check Find My again after it has had a chance to connect, and complete the separate removal step once the erase has completed.

The watch remains linked to the previous owner’s account, often because it was erased without being unpaired or removed from Find My. The previous owner must sign in and complete removal. A buyer cannot resolve this by resetting the watch again.
A cellular plan is still active
Removing the plan from the Apple Watch and ending the carrier subscription can be separate actions. Review the carrier account or contact the carrier to confirm cancellation.
The owner cannot access the linked account
Use Apple’s account recovery process. If the watch belonged to a deceased family member, a family relationship alone does not bypass Activation Lock; resolve access to the linked account or consult Apple Support with appropriate documentation. The outcome depends on the circumstances, so do not assume the lock will be removed.
