To remove Activation Lock, unpair the Apple Watch from the iPhone linked to its Apple Account, or erase and remove it through Find My on iCloud.com. Erasing the watch from its own Settings app is not enough: the linked Apple Account will still be required during setup.
What Apple Watch Activation Lock does
Activation Lock is part of Apple’s Find My security system. When Find My is enabled on the paired iPhone, the Apple Watch becomes associated with that Apple Account. The account’s email address or phone number and password are then required to unpair, reactivate, or disable Find My on the watch. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance.
This is different from the watch’s passcode:
- Watch passcode: A local code that protects access to the watch.
- Activation Lock: Account-based ownership protection that can survive an erase.
- Factory reset: Deletes local content and settings but does not necessarily remove the account association.
Remove Activation Lock with the paired iPhone
Use this method when you still have the iPhone paired with the watch and know the linked Apple Account password.

- Keep the Apple Watch and paired iPhone close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the info button next to the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm by tapping Unpair or Unpair [watch name].
- On a GPS + Cellular model, choose Remove Cellular Plan or Remove Mobile Data Plan if the watch is being sold or given away.
- Enter the Apple Account password when prompted and confirm.
Unpairing erases the watch, restores it to factory settings, removes it from the owner’s account, and disables Activation Lock. Menu wording can vary by region and software version.

About the cellular plan
If you are pairing the same watch with another iPhone for your own use, you may be able to retain the cellular plan. For a sale or gift, remove the plan from the watch. This is not necessarily the same as cancelling the carrier subscription; contact the carrier if the service itself must be cancelled.
Remove Activation Lock without the iPhone
If the paired iPhone is unavailable, the watch is no longer nearby, or it has already been handed to another person, the linked account holder can remove it remotely:
- Sign in to iCloud.com with the Apple Account linked to the watch.
- Open Find My from the Quick Access menu.
- Choose the Apple Watch under All Devices.
- Select Erase and follow the prompts.
- After the erase finishes, select Remove next to the watch.
- Select Continue if prompted.
Some accounts may show labels such as Find My iPhone, Erase Apple Watch, or an X beside the device. The exact interface may vary. A Deactivate & Remove option can appear in situations involving AppleCare+ Theft and Loss coverage; it is not a routine step for every user.

Why erasing the watch alone does not work
To erase a watch locally, open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, enter the watch passcode if requested, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan, and tap Erase All.
This deletes the watch’s local data but does not remove Activation Lock. The Apple Account originally used to set up the watch will still be requested during activation. If you already erased it this way, the linked account holder must unpair it from the paired iPhone or erase and remove it through Find My. Apple explains this distinction in its unpairing and erasing guidance.
If you bought the Apple Watch used
The previous owner must remove the watch from their Apple Account. A buyer cannot replace the previous owner’s credentials with their own by resetting the device.

Ask the seller to either:
- Unpair the watch through the Apple Watch app on their iPhone; or
- Erase and remove it through Find My on iCloud.com.
Complete setup yourself, or wait until you can verify it. If setup requests the previous owner’s Apple Account password, Activation Lock is still active. Do not rely on a seller’s claim that the watch was merely “reset.” Apple’s used-device guidance recommends confirming that the previous owner removed the lock before taking ownership.

Reset the Apple Account password through Apple’s official account-recovery process, then repeat the iPhone unpairing or iCloud.com removal steps. Forgetting the watch passcode is a different problem: resetting the watch can remove its local data, but it does not remove Activation Lock. The linked Apple Account is still required.
If the previous owner cannot be contacted
There is no supported buyer-side process that overrides another person’s Activation Lock. Request that the seller contact the original owner, return the watch, seek a refund, or use the marketplace’s buyer-protection process.

Do not pay for “Activation Lock bypass,” “IMEI unlock,” jailbreak, or similar services. They may be scams, request your Apple Account password or two-factor authentication code, or leave the watch unusable. Apple’s public instructions do not promise a general account-independent bypass or guarantee removal based only on a receipt or serial number.
Inherited Apple Watch
If the watch belonged to a deceased family member, the estate representative or family member who controls the linked Apple Account should perform the removal. A local reset does not transfer ownership, and proof of purchase or a serial number should not be treated as an automatic bypass.
Before selling or giving away your watch
- Keep the watch and paired iPhone nearby.
- Back up important information as appropriate.
- Unpair through the Apple Watch app rather than only erasing the watch.
- Enter the linked Apple Account password.
- Remove the cellular plan if the watch is changing owners.
- Handle carrier cancellation separately when necessary.
- Confirm that the watch reaches the setup screen.
- Do not ship it until the new owner can activate it without your credentials.
Unpairing erases local Apple Pay cards, photos, contacts, music, apps, and other content from the watch. It does not delete content stored in iCloud.

Troubleshooting

| The watch will not pair | It may still be linked to another account | Retry setup; a request for the former owner’s credentials confirms the lock remains. |
Final verification
The handoff is complete only when the watch reaches its setup screen and pairing does not request the former owner’s Apple Account. The former owner should also no longer see it in their Find My device list, and any cellular plan should have been removed when applicable.
If the watch is lost or stolen, do not remove Activation Lock. Use Find My to locate it, play a sound, mark it as lost, or erase personal information. See Apple’s Find My and Activation Lock instructions.
