The right way to reset an Apple Watch depends on what you are trying to do. If you are keeping it, use Erase All Content and Settings from the watch or paired iPhone. If you are selling, giving away, or trading it in, unpair it from the paired iPhone so Activation Lock is removed. If you forgot the passcode, erase the watch while it is connected to its charger—but expect to enter the Apple Account credentials previously used with it.
The key distinction is simple: erasing deletes the watch’s contents; unpairing removes the owner association.
Choose the correct Apple Watch reset method
| Your situation | Use this method | Activation Lock |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping the watch and troubleshooting it | Erase it from the Watch app or the watch itself | Usually remains associated with your Apple Account |
| Setting it up again with the same owner | Erase it from the paired iPhone or watch | May remain enabled |
| Selling, giving away, or trading it in | Unpair it from the paired iPhone | Removed when unpairing completes successfully |
| Forgotten passcode | Reset directly from the watch while it is on its charger | Remains enabled |
| No paired iPhone available | Erase the watch from Settings | Remains enabled |
| Bought a used watch that asks for someone else’s account | Ask the previous owner to remove it | Cannot be removed by a buyer-side factory reset |
Apple’s labels and screen order can vary slightly by watchOS version, iOS version, language, and region. You may see wording such as Erase All Content and Settings or Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.

- Protect your data: Keep the watch near the iPhone and allow health and activity information to synchronize before erasing it. Do not assume unsynchronized data can be recovered afterward.
- Know your credentials: Have the watch passcode available if possible, and know the Apple Account password—especially if you are unpairing or removing Activation Lock.
- Check cellular service: Decide whether you will keep or remove the cellular plan. Removing it from the watch is not necessarily the same as canceling the carrier subscription.
- Keep the devices close: The iPhone-based methods require the Apple Watch and iPhone to be nearby.
- Do not erase before a sale without unpairing: A local erase can leave Activation Lock enabled and prevent the next owner from activating the watch.
When you unpair, the iPhone attempts to create an Apple Watch backup. That backup can be used when setting up a replacement watch, provided the relevant data has synchronized successfully. See Apple’s guidance for selling, giving away, or trading in an Apple Watch.

How to reset Apple Watch from the paired iPhone
Use this method when you are keeping the watch and want to start over, troubleshoot software, or pair it again with the same owner.
- Keep the Apple Watch and iPhone close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.
- Confirm the erase.
- Enter the Apple Account password if prompted.
- On a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Wait for the erase to finish, then pair and set up the watch again.
- Restore from a backup when that option appears.
Choose Keep Plan when the same owner will continue using the watch and cellular subscription. Choose to remove the plan when the watch is being transferred, retired, or paired with another owner. If you want to stop paying for the service, contact the carrier separately.
Apple’s current reset instructions are available at Apple Support.

This is useful when the watch is accessible but the paired iPhone is missing, unavailable, or no longer working.
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if requested.
- For a GPS + Cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Tap Erase All or confirm the erase.
The watch will delete its content and return to the setup process. However, erasing it directly does not necessarily remove Activation Lock. The Apple Account originally used to set up the watch may still be required before it can be activated again.
Use this method for a watch you are keeping—not as the preferred preparation method for a sale or gift.

How to unpair Apple Watch before selling or giving it away
Unpairing is the definitive transfer procedure. It erases the watch, restores it to factory settings, and removes Activation Lock when the process completes successfully.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Keep the Apple Watch and paired iPhone close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap All Watches at the top.
- Tap the information button next to the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm the unpairing.
- On a cellular model, choose Remove Cellular Plan when transferring or selling the watch.
- Enter the Apple Account password to disable Activation Lock.
- Confirm and wait until the process finishes.
Afterward, the watch should show the setup screen rather than your personal data or a previous owner’s account prompt. Removing the cellular plan from the watch does not automatically cancel the carrier’s subscription; contact the carrier if the service itself must be canceled.
For Apple’s transfer and Activation Lock guidance, see How to unpair and erase your Apple Watch.
How to reset Apple Watch when you forgot the passcode

- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset again to confirm.
- Wait for the erase to finish.
- Set up the watch again and restore from a backup if prompted.
This procedure erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock. You may still need the Apple Account and password previously used to activate it.

What if you do not have the paired iPhone?
You can erase an accessible watch directly:
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap General, then Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode if requested.
- Choose whether to keep or remove cellular service.
- Confirm the erase.
The watch will be empty, but Activation Lock remains. If you are preparing it for another person, recover the original Apple Account or use Find My to remove the watch from your account. A direct erase alone is not enough.
If you already gave away the watch
If you no longer have the Apple Watch, Apple provides a remote-removal option:
- Sign in to Find My on iCloud.com/find.
- Select All Devices.
- Select the Apple Watch.
- Choose Erase Apple Watch and follow the prompts.
- After erasure, remove the watch from your account.
This is a recovery option, not the preferred handoff process. Unpairing before giving away the watch is safer because it attempts to create a backup and removes Activation Lock as part of the transfer.
How to check whether Activation Lock is still enabled
During setup, a watch affected by Activation Lock asks for the Apple Account credentials associated with its previous owner. Other warning signs include:
- The watch still displays the previous owner’s passcode screen or Home screen.
- Pairing with your iPhone cannot be completed because another account is required.
- A cellular model still appears connected to the previous owner’s service.
If you bought the watch used, the seller must unpair it and remove Activation Lock. A factory erase performed from the watch does not provide a legitimate bypass. If the seller cannot remove the lock, return the watch rather than paying for a purported third-party bypass service.
What happens to your data, backups, and Apple Pay cards?
Erasing removes content stored on the watch, including Apple Pay cards, photos, contacts, music, and apps. It does not delete the corresponding information from iCloud or from other devices where that information is stored.

Before erasing, allow the watch to synchronize with the iPhone and iCloud. Unpairing causes the iPhone to try to create a current watch backup, but that is not a guarantee that unsynchronized information can be recovered. Afterward, a backup may be available during setup of the same or a replacement watch.

You cannot remember the Apple Account password
Erasing the watch will not remove Activation Lock. Recover the Apple Account credentials before attempting to activate the watch again. Do not rely on services that claim to bypass Activation Lock.
The watch is disabled
Use the charger-based forgotten-passcode procedure above. Repeatedly guessing the passcode can make the situation worse, and automatic erasure only occurs when the relevant security setting is enabled.
The watch is stuck on the Apple logo
A reset is destructive and may not solve a hardware fault, battery problem, or failed watchOS update. Do not assume erasure is the first or best step if the watch will not start normally. If the problem persists, use Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance or contact Apple Support.

There is no physical reset button
Apple Watch has no physical reset button or SIM slot. Do not insert objects into openings in the case. Use the on-screen Settings or button sequence instead.
After the reset: what you should see
A successfully erased watch should start at the setup process and should not display your personal apps, cards, photos, contacts, or settings. A watch prepared for a new owner should also pair without requesting the previous owner’s Apple Account.
If setup still asks for the old account, the watch was erased but not fully unpaired or removed from the previous owner’s account. The original owner must complete that step.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does resetting Apple Watch delete everything?
Yes. An erase removes content and settings stored on the watch, including Apple Pay cards, apps, photos, contacts, and music. It does not delete corresponding data already stored in iCloud or elsewhere.
Can I reset Apple Watch without an iPhone?
Yes. Open Settings on the watch and choose General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Activation Lock may remain, so this is not the correct transfer method by itself.
Should I erase or unpair Apple Watch before selling it?
Unpair it from the paired iPhone. Unpairing erases the watch and removes Activation Lock, allowing the next owner to activate it.
What happens to my cellular plan?
You may be asked to keep or remove the plan. Removing it from the watch does not necessarily cancel the carrier subscription; contact the carrier separately if cancellation is required.
Is there a physical reset button on Apple Watch?
No. Use the Settings app or, if you forgot the passcode, the side-button and Digital Crown procedure while the watch is on its charger.
