Apple Watch counts your steps, but Apple’s built-in Activity complication does not display a dedicated numerical step total on the watch face. To check steps without installing anything, open Activity and scroll to Total Steps. To keep a step number visible on the face, install a third-party app such as Duffy, Pedometer++, or StepsApp, then add its complication.
How to see your steps on Apple Watch without an extra app
Apple Watch records step count as part of its activity data. You can view the current total directly on the watch:
- Press the Digital Crown and open Activity.
- Scroll down past the Move, Exercise, and Stand information.
- Continue until you see Total Steps.
The same section can also show distance, flights climbed, and activity history. This is the simplest and most authoritative Apple-native method, but it requires opening the Activity app. The number does not remain visible on the watch face.

Not as a dedicated step number. Apple’s built-in Activity complications focus on the Activity rings and related Move, Exercise, and Stand progress. Adding Activity to a face therefore does not necessarily put your numerical step total on screen.

See Apple’s current documentation for adding complications to a watch face and for viewing total steps in Activity.
How to put step count on the Apple Watch face
First install a step-count app that offers an Apple Watch complication. Open the app on the iPhone and allow it to read the relevant Apple Health data when prompted. Some apps may also need to be opened once on the watch before their complication becomes available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Then add the complication using the watch:
- Display the watch face you want to customize.
- Touch and hold the face.
- Tap Edit.
- Swipe left until you reach the complication customization screen.
- Tap the complication slot where you want the step count.
- Turn the Digital Crown to browse the available apps.
- Select the installed step-count app and choose its step complication.
- Press the Digital Crown to save the changes.
- Tap the watch face to return to it.
The exact labels and available options can vary by watchOS version, Apple Watch model, region, face, and complication slot. If the app appears in one slot but not another, choose a different slot or face.
Which apps can show steps on the face?
Duffy: the focused option
Duffy is aimed at users who mainly want a glanceable step count. Its listing describes complications for steps and other walking metrics, including distance and flights climbed, along with goals and historical views. It is listed as a free download in the U.S. App Store, with optional tip purchases; pricing and availability can change.
Duffy is a sensible starting point if you want a dedicated step display rather than a broad workout platform.

Step complication not showing? Try these fixes
The app is missing from the complication list
- Confirm the app is installed on the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Open it once on the iPhone and, if available, on the watch.
- Approve its Apple Health permissions, especially access to steps.
- Check that the face and selected slot support the app’s complication type.
- Remove and re-add the face, then try again.
- Install available app, iPhone, and watchOS updates.
- Restart the Apple Watch.
If the complication still does not appear, try another compatible face or a different step-count app.
The complication is blank or stuck at zero
Open the iPhone’s Health permissions for the app and make sure it can read step data. Permission names and menu locations can vary by app and iOS release, so use the app’s Health access settings rather than relying on one universal menu path.
Next, open the step app on the watch and give it time to load. Restart the watch if necessary. Pedometer++ specifically recommends restarting when its Watch complication does not load; its guidance is available in its FAQ.
The number does not update immediately
A third-party complication is a glanceable summary, not a guaranteed second-by-second sensor readout. watchOS schedules complication updates, and refresh behavior also depends on the app’s implementation.
Try tapping the complication to open the app, checking Health permissions, ensuring the watch and iPhone are synchronizing normally, and restarting the watch if the value is clearly stuck. Compare the result with Activity before concluding that the data is incorrect.

Apple Health can receive activity data from the Apple Watch, iPhone, and compatible apps. Multiple devices may record the same walk, and apps can choose or combine those sources differently. Pedometer++ says it uses Apple Health data alongside its own algorithm and may select the iPhone or Apple Watch based on which it considers to have captured the activity better. As a result, its number can differ somewhat from Apple Health.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A small difference is not automatically evidence of a faulty watch. Use one source consistently when tracking your own progress, and remember that no displayed total should be treated as an absolute accuracy guarantee.
How to see steps on iPhone instead
If you do not need the number permanently on the watch face, the iPhone provides more detailed alternatives:
- Fitness: the activity summary may include Step Count or Step Distance.
- Health: open the Steps category or add it to your pinned list to review step data and history.
These options require opening an app, but they can be more useful for reviewing previous days and trends.
What about a 10,000-step goal?
Apple’s Activity system is built around the Move, Exercise, and Stand rings, not a mandatory 10,000-step target. Some third-party apps, including Duffy and Pedometer++, advertise custom step goals, but 10,000 steps is not an Apple Watch requirement or a universal health standard.

The practical choice
If you want to avoid another app, use Activity → scroll down → Total Steps. If you want the number visible whenever you raise your wrist, install a compatible third-party step app, grant Health access, and add its complication to an information-dense face.
