To choose the card Apple Watch presents first for contactless Apple Pay payments, use the paired iPhone: Apple Watch app → My Watch → Wallet & Apple Pay → Transaction Defaults → Default Card, then tap the card you want. The next time you double-click the watch’s side button, that card appears automatically.
Change the default card from your iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Scroll to Transaction Defaults and tap Default Card.
- Select the card you want Apple Watch to present first.
Apple’s menu labels can vary slightly by watchOS version, language, or region, but Transaction Defaults is the setting to look for. See Apple’s current payment-card instructions.
Change it directly on Apple Watch
On supported current watchOS versions, you can also change the setting without opening the iPhone app:

- Tap the More Options button.
- Tap Default Card.
- Choose the card you want.
Apple’s watchOS guide may ask for your passcode before card details can be viewed. The exact controls depend on the software and watch model.

Use another card for one purchase
You do not need to change the default every time you want to use a different card:
- Double-click the Apple Watch side button to open Apple Pay.
- Scroll down through your cards.
- Tap the card you want for this purchase.
- Hold the watch display near the contactless reader until you feel a tap and hear the confirmation.
This is a one-time selection; it does not normally replace your saved default. Apple documents this payment flow in its Apple Pay purchase guide.
Why changing the iPhone default may not change the watch
Apple provides separate default-card controls for iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro. In practical terms, changing the iPhone’s default should not be treated as a guaranteed way to change which card Apple Watch presents. Set and verify the card in Apple Watch → My Watch → Wallet & Apple Pay.

The first payment card added to a device becomes that device’s default unless you change it later. Card order and default status are different: dragging cards to reorder Wallet changes navigation order, while Default Card controls which card opens first.
If the card is missing
A card stored in iPhone Wallet is not necessarily available for payment on the watch. Add it to Apple Watch explicitly:
- Open Apple Watch on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch → Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap Add Card, or tap Add next to an eligible card already on the iPhone.
- Complete the issuer’s verification steps.
You can also add one from the watch: open Wallet → More Options → Add Card, choose the card type, and follow the prompts. A card must be supported by a participating issuer, and Apple Pay availability differs by country or region.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the card is on the watch: check Apple Watch app → My Watch → Wallet & Apple Pay, not just the iPhone Wallet app.
- Update both devices: install the latest iOS and watchOS versions supported by your hardware.
- Check security requirements: Apple Pay requires an Apple Watch passcode and Apple Account two-factor authentication.
- Check eligibility: your country or region and card issuer must support Apple Pay.
- Refresh the settings: restart the iPhone and watch if the card or Default Card control does not appear.
- Contact the issuer for card errors: messages such as Could Not Add Card, Invalid Card, or Card Device Limit generally require the bank or card issuer to approve, verify, or reset the card. Apple does not approve cards for issuers. See Apple’s card-addition troubleshooting guide.
What the default card does—and does not do
The Apple Watch default card controls the card presented first when you initiate a contactless payment on the watch. It does not force every Apple Pay checkout to use that card. In apps and on websites, Apple Pay can provide its own payment-method selector, and billing, shipping, email, and phone details are separate transaction defaults.
If your Apple Watch is lost
Mark the watch as lost to suspend its ability to make Apple Pay payments. You can also sign in at account.apple.com and remove Apple Pay items associated with the device. Contact your card issuer if you need additional help.

Can I set the default card from Apple Watch itself?
Yes. On supported watchOS versions, open Wallet, tap More Options, choose Default Card, and select a card. The iPhone route remains the most consistently documented path.

Can I use another card without changing my default?
Yes. Double-click the side button, scroll to another card, select it, and hold the watch near the contactless reader.
Why is my card on my iPhone but not on Apple Watch?
Cards must be added to the watch separately. In the iPhone’s Apple Watch app, open My Watch → Wallet & Apple Pay and use Add Card. Issuer support and verification are also required.
Does rearranging cards change the default card?
Not reliably. Reordering changes the cards’ display order; use the dedicated Default Card control to choose which card opens first.

Why does Apple Pay ask me to verify my card?
The card issuer may require identity verification before adding or activating the card on Apple Watch. Follow the prompt or contact the issuer if verification fails.
