You can create a normal alarm directly on your Apple Watch without using your iPhone: open Alarms, tap Add, set the time with the Digital Crown, and tap the checkmark. Apple Watch also handles iPhone alarms and Sleep schedule wake-up alarms, but those are separate alarm systems with different controls.

Set a regular alarm directly on Apple Watch

  1. Open the Alarms app.
  2. Tap Add.
  3. Tap AM/PM, then choose the hour and minutes.
  4. Turn the Digital Crown to set the time.
  5. Tap the checkmark to save the alarm.

The switch beside an alarm determines whether it is active. Turning the switch off preserves the alarm and its settings so you can use it again later. These steps reflect Apple’s current watchOS 26 guide; labels can vary slightly with your watchOS version, language, or region. Apple’s alarm guide has the current instructions.

Customize an Apple Watch alarm

Open Alarms, tap the alarm’s time, and change the settings you need.

Repeat an alarm on selected days

Tap Repeat, then select the days of the week. The repeat pattern belongs to that individual alarm and is separate from a recurring Sleep schedule.

Add a label

Tap Label and enter a name such as Medication, School, or Water plants. Labels make it easier to identify the right alarm when several are active.

Enable or disable snooze

Tap Snooze to turn snooze on or off. If it is enabled, you can tap Snooze when the alarm rings. To change the interval, tap Snooze Duration and choose one of the durations shown on your watch. Apple documents this control but does not establish one universal snooze duration for every current Apple Watch configuration.

Allow an alarm to sound in Silent Mode

Tap Break Through Silent Mode if you want that particular alarm to make sound even when the watch is in Silent Mode. Leave it disabled for a wrist-tap alarm instead.

Turn off, edit, or delete an alarm

  • Turn it off: Open Alarms and tap the switch beside the alarm. This keeps it available.
  • Edit it: Tap the alarm’s time, then change Change Time, Repeat, Label, Snooze, Snooze Duration, or Break Through Silent Mode.
  • Delete it: Swipe left on the alarm and tap Delete. Deletion removes it from the alarm list.

Create a silent wrist-tap alarm

To make an alarm alert you quietly, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn on Silent Mode. The watch can then alert you with haptic taps rather than a sound.

Check the same menu if the taps are too subtle: set Haptics to Default or Prominent, rather than Off. Also open the individual alarm and make sure Break Through Silent Mode is disabled. If it is enabled, that alarm can still sound while the watch is being worn in Silent Mode. Apple’s Sounds & Haptics guide documents these controls.

Adjust alarm volume and haptic strength

For sound, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and adjust the volume used for alerts, alarms, timers, and system sounds. Media volume is a separate control, so changing it does not necessarily change alarm volume.

For wrist taps, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose Default, Prominent, or Off. Apple also documents Automatically Adjust Volume on supported newer models, including Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Ultra 2, and later models listed in its current guide. Availability depends on the model and software.

Set an alarm with Siri

Try commands such as:

  • “Set an alarm for 7 a.m.”
  • “Set a repeating alarm for 6:30 a.m.”
  • “Set repeating alarm for 6 a.m.”

You can also try “Turn off my 7 a.m. alarm,” although changing or deleting an existing alarm by voice can vary with Siri’s language, region, software, and how the request is interpreted. If Siri misunderstands, create or edit the alarm manually in the Alarms app. Siri availability differs by country, region, and language. See Apple’s Siri guidance for Apple Watch.

Apple Watch alarms versus iPhone alarms

The device on which you create an alarm matters. These systems are related, but they are not automatically interchangeable.

Alarm type Where you create it Best for Important limitation
Apple Watch alarm Apple Watch Alarms app Wrist-only alerts, medication, appointments, naps, and weekly routines It does not alert the iPhone when it goes off
iPhone Clock alarm iPhone Clock app Managing alarms on the phone while receiving alerts on the watch Requires Push Alerts from iPhone for the watch
Sleep schedule alarm Sleep and Health controls Recurring bedtime, wake-up, and sleep-duration routines Its controls are separate from ordinary alarms

Send iPhone alarms to Apple Watch

  1. On iPhone, open Clock > Alarms.
  2. Tap Add, set the time, and optionally configure repeat days, label, sound, snooze, and snooze duration.
  3. Tap Done.
  4. Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone.
  5. Tap My Watch > Clock.
  6. Turn on Push Alerts from iPhone.

With this option enabled, an iPhone-created alarm can alert you on Apple Watch, where you can snooze or dismiss it. The direction is not fully two-way: an alarm created on Apple Watch does not alert the iPhone. Apple’s iPhone alarm instructions cover the phone-side settings.

Manage Sleep schedule wake-up alarms

A Sleep schedule alarm is part of a broader bedtime and wake-up routine. It is not the same as a normal alarm created for a task or appointment. Sleep settings can also be used with a sleep-duration goal and sleep tracking. Apple’s Health features guide explains the Sleep app context.

Skip only tonight’s wake-up alarm

  1. Open Alarms on Apple Watch.
  2. Tap the wake-up alarm shown below the regular alarms.
  3. Tap Skip for Tonight.

This skips the upcoming wake-up alarm without necessarily removing the recurring Sleep schedule.

Change only the next wake-up alarm on iPhone

  1. Open Clock > Alarms.
  2. Tap Change.
  3. Adjust the wake-up time or alarm options.
  4. Tap Done.
  5. Choose Change Next Alarm Only.

Do not choose Change This Schedule unless you want the recurring Sleep schedule changed.

Turn off one wake-up alarm while keeping the schedule

  1. Open Clock > Alarms > Change on iPhone.
  2. Scroll to Alarm Options and turn off Alarm.
  3. Tap Done > Change Next Alarm Only.

Disable or edit the recurring Sleep schedule

In the same wake-up alarm controls, tap Change > Edit Sleep Schedule in Health. From there, turn off Sleep Schedule, or edit the schedule and turn off its Alarm. Turning off the alarm does not necessarily disable the rest of the Sleep schedule.

Apple’s current instructions for these choices are in its wake-up alarm guide.

Silent Mode, Focus, and Do Not Disturb

Apple Watch alarms have their own sound and haptic settings. Silent Mode can produce a wrist-tap alarm, while Break Through Silent Mode can make an individual alarm sound. Check alarm volume and haptics under Settings > Sounds & Haptics.

For iPhone Clock alarms, Apple documents that alarms sound even when iPhone Silent Mode or Do Not Disturb/Focus is enabled. That documented iPhone behavior should not be assumed to describe every Apple Watch alarm configuration.

Why didn’t my Apple Watch alarm go off?

  1. Check the alarm switch. In Alarms, make sure the switch beside the alarm is on.
  2. Identify the alarm type. Confirm whether it is a watch alarm, an iPhone Clock alarm, or a Sleep schedule wake-up alarm.
  3. Check iPhone alert forwarding. For an iPhone alarm, go to the iPhone’s Apple Watch app > My Watch > Clock and enable Push Alerts from iPhone.
  4. Check volume. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and raise the alarm volume if you expect sound.
  5. Check haptics. Set Haptics to Default or Prominent, not Off, if you expect wrist taps.
  6. Check Silent Mode behavior. If you expect sound despite Silent Mode, enable Break Through Silent Mode for that alarm. If you want silence, make sure it is disabled.
  7. Check Sleep schedule actions. You may have selected Skip for Tonight, turned off the next alarm, or changed the schedule rather than the next occurrence.
  8. Check how the watch is worn. If you rely on haptics, wear the watch securely enough for the taps to be noticed.
  9. Check Nightstand Mode. For a bedside alarm, make sure Nightstand Mode is enabled and the watch is connected to its charger.
  10. Use manual setup if Siri failed. Create or edit the alarm directly in the Alarms app.

Alarm behavior can also differ by Apple Watch model, watchOS version, language, and region, so the exact labels may not match every screen shown in Apple’s watchOS 26 documentation.
