Turn on Silent Mode from Control Center: press the Apple Watch side button, then tap the slashed-bell icon. Alert sounds will be silenced while haptic notifications continue. If you do not feel taps, check Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Haptics and choose Default or Prominent.
Turn on vibrate-only mode from Control Center
- Wake your Apple Watch.
- Press the side button to open Control Center. Do not press the Digital Crown for this shortcut.
- Tap the Silent Mode button, shown as a bell with a slash.
- Confirm that the slashed-bell icon indicates Silent Mode is active.
Apple Watch should now deliver normal notification taps without playing alert sounds. This guidance follows the current watchOS 26 interface; older watchOS versions may use slightly different labels or layouts. See Apple’s audio and notification settings guide.
Enable Silent Mode in Settings
For the full settings path on the watch, open:
Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Silent Mode
You can also adjust the watch’s sound and haptic settings from the paired iPhone:

Make Apple Watch vibrations more noticeable
Open:
Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Haptics → Prominent
Apple describes Prominent as adding an extra tap before some alerts. It may make alerts easier to notice, but it does not necessarily make every vibration dramatically stronger.
- Off: disables haptic alerts.
- Default: uses standard wrist taps.
- Prominent: adds an additional tap for some alerts.
Do not select Off if you want the watch to vibrate.

Keep Apple Watch alarms quiet
A regular alarm can tap your wrist without making a sound when Silent Mode is enabled. However, individual alarms can override Silent Mode.
To check an alarm, open:
Alarms → tap an alarm → Break Through Silent Mode
If Break Through Silent Mode is enabled, that alarm is allowed to make sound despite Silent Mode. Turn it off if that particular alarm must remain vibration-only.

Covering the display with your palm for at least three seconds can mute an alert that is currently sounding, provided Cover to Mute is enabled under Settings → Gestures → Cover to Mute. This is a temporary mute, not a replacement for Silent Mode. Apple notes that the Cover to Mute gesture does not silence wake-up alarms.

Silent Mode versus Do Not Disturb
| Setting | What it does | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Silent Mode | Silences alert sounds while allowing haptic notifications. | Receiving wrist taps without alert noises. |
| Do Not Disturb or Focus | Suppresses or delays many calls and alerts and may prevent the expected notification experience. | Reducing interruptions when you do not need every alert. |
Do Not Disturb is not the normal solution for vibrate-only notifications. It can suppress the alerts you are trying to feel.
Choose which apps can alert your watch
Silent Mode applies globally to alert sounds, but app notification settings determine whether an app sends anything to the watch.

Apple Watch still makes sounds: what to check
Silent Mode concerns alert sounds; it is not a universal mute for every sound-producing feature. If the watch still talks or plays audio, check these possibilities:
- Siri: Siri has separate audio behavior and volume controls.
- Music or podcasts: Media playback is controlled separately from notification alerts.
- An alarm: Check whether that alarm has Break Through Silent Mode enabled.
- A system feature: Some sounds may not be ordinary notification alerts.
Apple documents separate controls for system sounds, Siri, and media in its volume and haptics guide.
Apple Watch is not vibrating
- Check Haptics: Go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Haptics and choose Default or Prominent, not Off.
- Check Silent Mode: Silent Mode should silence sounds, not remove haptic notifications.
- Improve skin contact: Wear the watch snugly but comfortably. A loose band or poor contact can make taps difficult to feel.
- Check notification permissions: Confirm the app is allowed to notify the watch and has not been routed only to Notification Center.
- Check Focus: A Focus mode or Do Not Disturb may be suppressing the alert.
- Test with a normal notification: Siri, music, podcasts, and other audio are not reliable tests of notification haptics.
- Restart the watch: Restart it if the settings are correct but notifications behave inconsistently.
If expected haptic alerts still do not work with a correctly fitted watch and enabled notifications, Apple indicates that service may be necessary. Menu names can vary on older watchOS versions; Apple’s Apple Watch User Guide provides version-specific documentation.
