Set up the Pixel Watch 3 with the Google Pixel Watch app on an Android phone—not the generic Wear OS app. You need Android 10 or newer, a Google Account, Bluetooth, location, and an internet connection. iPhones are not supported.
A complete first-day setup should cover more than pairing: update the watch, configure health and safety features, secure Google Wallet, decide whether to activate LTE, reduce notification noise, choose useful Tiles and complications, install only the apps you need, and enable device finding.
Before you begin
Check these requirements before turning on the watch:
- A compatible Android phone running Android 10.0 or newer. iPhones cannot be used with Pixel Watch 3.
- The latest version of the Google Pixel Watch app from Google Play.
- A Google Account. Some Google Workspace accounts may require Device Management to be disabled.
- Bluetooth and location enabled on the phone.
- Wi-Fi or mobile data on the phone.
- Both the phone and watch charged, preferably above 50% before major updates.
- The included USB-C charging cable, with the band installed correctly.
Google’s Store and support pages may refer to Fitbit or Google Health depending on your region, account, and app rollout. These names can appear in different parts of setup without necessarily representing entirely separate services.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Pair Pixel Watch 3 with your Android phone
- Charge the watch and phone.
- Install or update the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Turn on Bluetooth and location, then connect the phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Turn on the watch by holding the crown for about three seconds.
- Place the watch beside the phone. For Fast Pair troubleshooting, Google recommends keeping them within 0.5 metres (1.6 feet).
- Tap the Fast Pair prompt if it appears. If it does not, open the Google Pixel Watch app manually and choose the option to add a watch.
- Confirm that the pairing code shown on the phone matches the code on the watch.
- Sign in to, or select, the Google Account you want to use.
- Choose whether you wear the watch on your left or right wrist.
- Follow the prompts for software updates, Fitbit or Google Health, LTE, safety features, screen lock, Wallet, Gemini or Assistant, and additional apps.
- Keep the watch near the phone and connected to a stable network until setup and synchronisation finish.
Google says the watch automatically updates during setup. The Pixel Watch app should eventually show Connected. The watch should display the selected account, current time, notifications, and installed services. If the app still says Disconnected, setup is not complete.
Complete the important setup prompts
Set a screen lock
Use a PIN or pattern even if you find unlocking a watch inconvenient. A lock helps protect health information, notifications, account data, and payment cards, and Google Wallet may require one. The exact security menu can move between Wear OS releases, so use the security or watch-settings option shown during onboarding or in the current Pixel Watch app.
Adjust the fit and wrist setting
Select the correct wrist and wear the watch snugly enough for the optical sensors to maintain contact, but not so tightly that it becomes uncomfortable. Adjust the fit before judging heart-rate, exercise, or sleep results. For overnight tracking, wear it consistently and make sure the sensor area remains against your skin.
Connect Fitbit or Google Health
Review the health permissions instead of accepting every prompt automatically. Activity, exercise, sleep, heart-health, readiness, and safety features may have different availability depending on your country, account, software, and subscription. Basic tracking does not necessarily include every coaching or advanced insight feature.
Google’s branding is currently transitioning between Fitbit and Google Health. Check the account, permissions, feature descriptions, and renewal terms displayed on your own phone. Health information is not a substitute for medical advice or emergency services.
Decide whether you need LTE
The Wi-Fi/Bluetooth model suits people who normally keep their phone nearby. It can provide notifications, health tracking, apps, and connected watch functions without a separate watch line.
The LTE model can support calls, texts, music, Google Wallet, Assistant or Gemini, and other connected functions away from the phone after activation. LTE still depends on a compatible carrier, supported country, account provisioning, and an eligible plan; an ordinary phone plan does not automatically support Pixel Watch service.
Choose LTE if you regularly run, walk, travel, or exercise without your phone and want communication or safety functions available independently. Skip it if your phone is almost always with you and you do not want activation or recurring service costs.
Configure Google Wallet
Add cards during setup or later through Wallet. A screen lock may be required. Payment availability depends on your country, bank, card, account, and Google’s security requirements. LTE is not required for every payment scenario, but connectivity and authentication requirements can vary, so test Wallet before relying on it.
Review safety features carefully
Read the emergency-contact, location-sharing, and safety screens rather than blindly accepting defaults. Availability and behaviour can vary by region, network, account, and subscription. These features are not guaranteed replacements for emergency services or a working phone connection.
Rank #2
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 41mm screen is twice as bright and 10% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]

- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]; and receive a daily target based on cardio load and readiness levels
Enable Find Hub
During setup, enable location and add the watch to Google’s device-finding service. Google says Find Hub requires the watch to be paired with a compatible phone with location enabled. Open the service and confirm that the watch appears, then test the ring or find function while you know where the watch is. Finding it later can depend on battery, connection state, location settings, and network availability. See Google’s Find Hub guidance.

Wear OS controls worth learning first
- Crown: Press it to open the app launcher. Pressing it again or using the current interface behaviour returns to the watch face. Hold it for about three seconds to turn on the watch or open power and restart controls, depending on its state.
- Side button: Its actions can include recent apps, payments, or other system functions. Check the labels on your current software build because button mappings can change.
- Swipe down: Open Quick Settings, where you can access items such as connectivity, brightness, sound, and other controls.
- Swipe up: View notifications.
- Swipe left or right: Move through Tiles.
- Press and hold the watch face: Choose and edit faces.
- Tap the watch face: Use the face’s available interactions or enter its customisation controls.
Arrange Tiles around real habits
Tiles are glanceable panels that should reduce the number of times you reach for your phone. Put the information and actions you use most near the front: steps or activity, weather, calendar, battery, heart rate, exercise, Wallet, Maps, music controls, timer, or alarms. Do not fill every position merely because it is available; a short, useful Tile sequence is faster than a crowded one.
Choose and customise a watch face
You can change the face on the watch or through the companion app. Google’s Wear OS face instructions cover the current general process, although labels may differ by software version.
Three practical face layouts
- Everyday: Time, date, battery, and either weather or the next appointment. This is readable and avoids visual clutter.
- Fitness: Heart rate, steps or activity, an exercise shortcut, a readiness or recovery metric where available, and battery.
- Work or travel: Calendar, weather, a second time zone, timer, and Wallet or Maps where supported.
A complication is a small information or shortcut area on a watch face. Choose complications based on repeated actions rather than filling every slot. Useful categories include weather, calendar, battery, date, activity, heart rate, timer, sunrise or sunset, Wallet, music, and Maps.
Official faces are generally the safest choice for compatibility and support. Third-party faces offer more styles but can consume more battery, request additional permissions, or stop working after a Wear OS change. Prefer Google Play listings and avoid random APK sites. Check that a face supports Pixel Watch 3, its complication system, and your current Wear OS release.
Some older faces are unavailable because they are no longer compatible with Wear OS. A face made for an older release may install incorrectly, lack complications, disappear after an update, or fail to update. Google’s watch-face compatibility guidance explains this limitation.
Install only the apps you will use
On the watch, press the crown, open Play Store, choose a category or tap Search, select an app, and tap Install. To update watch apps, use Crown → Play Store → Google Play → Manage apps → Update all. Google notes that some apps require permissions on both the phone and watch, and some do not support Work Profile or non-Google accounts.
Useful first-wave categories
- Google essentials: Maps, Calendar, Keep, Wallet, Home, and Messages or phone controls where supported.
- Health and fitness: Fitbit or Google Health, exercise tools, sleep and recovery tools, and a running or cycling app if you need deeper training features.
- Media: Music streaming, podcast controls, and remote playback controls.
- Utilities: Timer, alarm, weather, calculator, device-finding tools, and a camera remote when compatible with your phone.
- Smart home: Google Home or a compatible platform such as Home Assistant for advanced users.
Do not assume that a phone app and its watch version have identical features. Check the Play Store listing, account requirements, permissions, and phone compatibility. Install apps that replace a repeated phone action; installing everything at once increases notification noise, background activity, storage use, and launcher clutter.
Reduce notification noise immediately
Use the Pixel Watch app and the watch’s notification settings to decide which phone apps can alert you. Keep calls, messages, calendar reminders, navigation, security alerts, and useful fitness notifications. Disable promotional, shopping, social, and high-volume alerts unless they genuinely help on your wrist.

Remember that notification mirroring and installing an app directly on the watch are different things. A phone app can send an alert without having a full watch app installed.

Update the watch and maintain it
For the best update experience, Google recommends putting the watch on its charger, ensuring it has at least 50% battery, and connecting it to Wi-Fi. Updates can take under an hour, during which the watch may be unusable.
- System update: Swipe down → Settings → System → System updates.
- Software details: Swipe down → Settings → System → About → Versions.
- Phone app updates: Google Play Store → profile icon → Manage apps & device → Updates available.
Google rates Pixel Watch 3 for up to 24 hours with always-on display and up to 36 hours with Battery Saver. The 41mm model has a 307mAh typical battery and the 45mm model a 420mAh typical battery. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed endurance. LTE, GPS, workouts, screen brightness, always-on display, notifications, and third-party apps can reduce runtime. See the official specifications.
41mm or 45mm?
The 41mm watch is smaller, lighter, and often better for smaller wrists, but has less battery capacity. The 45mm model offers a larger display and battery, which can make text, maps, and workout information easier to read. Google lists weights of 31g for the 41mm and 37g for the 45mm, excluding bands.
Balance features against battery life
Start with always-on display enabled if glanceability matters. If the watch cannot comfortably last through your day, reduce brightness, disable always-on display, remove unnecessary notifications and apps, and limit LTE or GPS use. Battery Saver is useful for extending runtime but limits the normal experience.
Fix common Pixel Watch 3 setup problems
Fast Pair does not appear
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- Turn on phone location.
- Move the phone and watch within 0.5m (1.6ft).
- Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data works.
- Update the Pixel Watch app and phone software.
- Open the Pixel Watch app manually.
- Restart the watch by holding the crown for about three seconds and selecting Restart.
- Try pairing again.
Use Google’s pairing and reset troubleshooting if the problem continues.
The pairing codes do not match
Cancel the attempt and restart pairing. Do not accept a mismatched code. If the problem persists, follow Google’s pairing troubleshooting flow rather than repeatedly approving the attempt.
The watch freezes during setup
Hold the crown for about three seconds and restart. If necessary, hold the crown and side button together for about 20 seconds to force a reboot, then retry setup after the watch fully starts. A factory reset is a last resort: it erases apps, settings, and watch data.

- Force-restart the watch if necessary.
- Turn off Bluetooth on the watch.
- Turn on Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings → System → System updates.
- Keep the watch on its charger with more than 50% battery.
Apps will not install
Check the watch’s internet connection, Google Account synchronisation, available storage, app compatibility, and required phone permissions. Some apps do not work with Work Profile or non-Google accounts. If only one app fails, its listing may not support Pixel Watch 3 or your current Wear OS version.
A watch face is missing
The face may be incompatible with the current Wear OS release, unavailable in your region, removed from Google Play, associated with a different Play Store account, or waiting for an update. Avoid sideloading an unknown replacement; use a supported Google Play listing instead.
When to factory-reset
Reset only after ordinary pairing and restart fixes fail. Restarting preserves the watch’s setup; a factory reset erases apps, settings, and data and requires setup again. Use the reset path documented in Google’s official troubleshooting guide.
