Apple Watch data normally appears in the iPhone’s Health app automatically once the Watch is paired and connected. There usually isn’t a separate “sync” button. If readings are missing, first check the Watch connection and Fitness Tracking; then check Health permissions, iCloud settings, and which data source Health is using.
What “sync” means
There are several different processes that are easy to confuse:
- Pairing links Apple Watch to an iPhone through the Apple Watch app. This is the basic requirement for the usual Watch-to-iPhone setup.
- Local transfer moves supported Watch measurements to Health and activity records to Fitness on the paired iPhone. It normally happens without a manual sync command.
- iCloud Health sync keeps Health information available across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. It is useful when data is missing from another iPhone or iPad; it does not pair the Watch.
- Third-party sharing lets compatible apps read or write selected Health categories, subject to your permissions.
- Data-source priority determines how Health uses entries when multiple devices or apps record the same category.
Apple describes Health as a place to collect information from iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible apps, and connected devices. Supported Watch data, such as activity and heart-rate measurements, can be added after pairing. Apple’s Health guide
Before you start
- Use a compatible iPhone and Apple Watch, paired through the Apple Watch app.
- Sign in to the Apple Account you intend to use. For Health data to sync across Apple devices, Apple also requires the same account, an internet connection, and updated operating systems. Apple’s Health data guide
- For connection troubleshooting, keep the devices near each other and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are available on the iPhone. They are useful connection checks; not every Watch function depends on both being on at all times.
- Wear the Watch so its sensors have appropriate contact with your skin for measurements that require it.
- Features and readings vary by Watch model, software, region, age, and setup. Not every Watch supports every health category.
Pair Apple Watch with your iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- If a Watch is already listed, tap All Watches. Otherwise, begin pairing when prompted.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the Watch and iPhone close while setup finishes.
- If asked, choose to restore from a Watch backup or set up the Watch as new.
If the Watch is new or has been reset, pairing is the essential first step; looking for a Health-app sync switch won’t substitute for it. Apple’s pairing guidance explains the setup and restore options.

Check whether data is arriving
- Wear the Watch for a while, then walk a short distance or start and finish a basic workout.
- On the iPhone, open Health, tap Search, and select a relevant category such as Activity, Steps, Heart, or Sleep.
- Open the metric and look at recent entries. Scroll to Data Sources & Access to see which devices or apps contributed data.
- Open Fitness as well to check activity and workout records.
Do not expect every reading to appear instantly. Some measurements are taken periodically, some workout records are finalized after a session, and data may arrive after a disconnected Watch reconnects.
Fix missing data, in order
1. Check the Watch–iPhone connection
- Bring the Watch and iPhone close together.
- On iPhone, open Control Center and check that Airplane Mode is off and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on.
- On Apple Watch, open Control Center and check that Airplane Mode is off.
- Look for a connection warning: a red iPhone or red X icon indicates a connection problem; a green iPhone icon indicates the Watch has connected again.
- Restart both devices, then check Health again after they reconnect.
For icon meanings and further connection steps, see Apple’s connection troubleshooting guide.
2. Turn on Fitness Tracking
If steps or other activity information are missing, check this setting on the iPhone:

- Open Health and tap your profile picture or initials.
- Tap Devices, then select your Apple Watch.
- Check that Fitness Tracking is enabled.
Apple specifically recommends checking Fitness Tracking when steps or other information are not being tracked. Exact labels or nesting can vary slightly by iOS and watchOS version. Apple’s Health troubleshooting steps
3. Review permissions for an app or device
If a particular third-party app or Watch app is missing from Health, confirm it is allowed to write the category you need:
- Open Health, tap Summary, then tap your profile picture or initials.
- Under Privacy, tap Apps or Devices, then choose the relevant app or device.
- Enable permission to write data to Health for the desired category. Enable read data from Health if the app also needs to use information already stored there.
Read and write access are separate and category-specific. An app may need one or both, and compatibility is not universal. Apple explains how to manage Health data access.

4. Check the category, date, and source
Make sure you are viewing the right Health category and date range. If the expected entry is not obvious, open Data Sources & Access within the metric. Data might be present but attributed to another device, combined with overlapping entries, or not included in the total you expected.

5. Restart, then update
Restart both devices if you have not already, keep them connected, and allow time for records to appear. Install available iOS and watchOS updates if the problem persists. Avoid erasing or unpairing the Watch as an early troubleshooting step.

Changing phones is a transfer and recovery issue, not simply a Watch sync toggle.
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on the new iPhone.
- If the old iPhone is available, confirm Health is enabled in iCloud on both phones.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the new iPhone and pair the Watch.
- Choose the most recent Watch backup when offered.
- Keep the new iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and allow time for Health information to appear.
Apple warns that Health and Activity information may take time to populate after a transfer. Recent Watch changes not included in a backup may not be restored. If you did not use iCloud Health sync, an encrypted computer backup may preserve Health and Activity data; an unencrypted backup is not equivalent. If the old iPhone is unavailable and there is no usable iCloud or encrypted computer backup, some Health and Activity data may not be recoverable. Apple’s transfer guidance and backup information

Fix duplicate or unexpected readings
Health may receive the same category from iPhone, one or more Apple Watches, third-party apps, Bluetooth accessories, or manual entries. To inspect or change the order for a category:
- In Health, tap Search and select a category and metric, such as Activity > Steps.
- Scroll to Data Sources & Access and tap Edit.
- Reorder the sources, or turn off a source with its checkmark, then tap Done.
Apple says Health prioritizes manually entered data, then iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch data, followed by apps and Bluetooth devices; you can change the order for a category. This means an odd total may be a source-priority issue rather than a transfer failure. Apple’s data-source guidance
Why different kinds of data behave differently
- Steps and activity: Both iPhone and Watch may record activity, so source priority can affect what you see.
- Workouts: A workout is generally recorded by the Workout/Fitness experience or a compatible third-party app. If it is missing, check that app’s Health write permission.
- Heart rate: Supported Watch measurements can appear in Health after pairing; check the Heart category and recent entries.
- Sleep: Sleep tracking needs to be set up, and you need to wear the Watch while sleeping. It cannot create historical sleep measurements for nights when tracking was not enabled.
- Blood oxygen and other advanced features: Availability depends on model, software, region, and sometimes other eligibility conditions. Their absence does not necessarily indicate a sync failure.
For feature-specific availability, consult Apple’s Health guide and the documentation for your Watch model and region.
When to unpair and pair again
Consider unpairing only after checking connection, Fitness Tracking, app permissions, sources, and software—and after confirming where your Health data is backed up or synced. Unpairing erases the Watch, so do not use it as a first fix if you are unsure whether important records are safe. Apple’s unpairing instructions explain the process and what happens to the Watch and Activation Lock.
If the Watch still will not connect or transfer supported data after these checks, contact Apple Support before erasing it, particularly if you need to preserve records or do not have a verified backup.
